1. 13 Reasons Why is a Netflix Original 2. based on the novel of the same name, 3. (which I have not read). 4. It is a show concerning the suicide of a high school girl, 5. and the legacy she left behind. 6. Most tangibly this takes the form of 7. the Tapes 8. A series of cassettes which she left behind, 9. intending for key people to hear them. 10. The show follows 11. one such person, 12. as he struggles to unravel and comprehend 13. the truth of this horrible tragedy. This show relies heavily on twists and turns, so use the Netflix Spoiler Policy by denoting which episode you have finished up to before you discuss, example: Episode 3 So that's who killed Laura Palmer! Discuss.

Just finished 7, and noticed it was directed by Gregg Arraki, drat. Also I'm thinking Tony is a Tyler Durden or something

I thought I'd finish Episode 11 and call it a night. Uh... nope! No sleep for me! ![]()

That's a pretty good review of episode 1, what did you think of the rest?

Yeah the last two episodes are very hard to watch. I'm still processing it. I will agree that I don't think Hannah was meant to be entirely sympathetic or vindicated.

Junkfist posted:everyone's reaction to the tapes is to treat them like gospel. Well that's just demonstrably untrue. Also could you maybe use spoiler tags, the show has only been available for 2 days.

They actually put in two hooks for a season 2: Tyler's gun collection, but also at the end we hear "Alex has shot himself, he's in critical condition"

Toaster Beef posted:My wife's a counselor (not a school counselor, but still) and spent the first minute or so of that scene nodding along. Apparently he was doing a pretty good job. Then things took a serious turn, and she spent the rest of that scene yelling at the screen because he was doing literally everything wrong. The level to which he failed was almost malicious. They telegraphed really hard that he was going to be one of the tapes, and I thought it was going to be Something Awful, glad they didn't go there and just made it regular Real World Awful. Goddamn I was so mad at that fictional character.

Yeah I do hope they don't do a second season, I thought that was extremely unnecessary and probably my only complaint with the show's ending.

Lampsacus posted:Talking to this show with my psychology friends (clinical, etc) and they had some criticisms. Mainly that it should never be ok to show self harm/suicide/sexual assault etc on camera. I disagree. That's especially weird in this day and age when you can spend 2 minutes and find video clips of real people actually killing themselves live and on camera. Am I understanding you that their position is that no film or piece of art should ever show those things?

Lots of high school kids have a couple tattoos but yeah the one girl who looked about 30 and had at least 12 visible tattoos was insane. I thought she only worked at the coffee shop and knew Clay from outside school so when I saw her at school in a later episode I burst out laughing. It looked ridiculous.

I'm pretty sure Justin was a Junior, maybe even a Senior. And I think the other jock dudes were supposed to be too.

As stupid as the idea of Tony is, I still loved him. He's a retro greaser gay Latino who loves Joy Division. oh... I just realized I like him because he's basically what I was in high school... except I was bisexual but Tony might be too for all we know

Yeah Alex is by far my favorite outside of Tony. He's super realistic and was able to pull off sounding like a teenager without sounding like "somebody wrote lines a teenager would say" which is VERY HARD TO DO. The show definitely wants to trick you into thinking he's gay, just like it kinda tricks you into making assumptions about his dad.

Look, My So-Called Life was clearly an homage to Duke Nukem Forever.

Donnie Darko made using Echo and the Bunnymen a punchline, but I'm honestly OK with that because they were great. e: Wait, the DD scene I'm thinking of was "Under the Milky Way Tonight", which was The Church, never mind

If Kurt Cobain's suicide didn't cause an epidemic, nothing will. When Kurt died, everyone loved him and Nirvana's record sales tripled. And nobody was like "oh man, poor Courtney Love" either.

Maybe season 2 will go full Twin Peaks and it'll turn out Hannah faked it. I wish I were kidding, but it would be preferable to "13 reasons why I shot up the school".
