Mad Men shows Don Draper as a complete wreck around S4, and by S6 he’s blacked out and puking at wakes during the day. He’s portrayed as good as what he does, and able to put on a smooth front to people a lot of the time, but a complete disaster of a human being.

So what made the series explode in popularity for Season 3?

Maybe it was because people were going nuts about the show and new people started from the beginning when it was still "Wow, it's the 50s and they are doing 50s things!" Then when they got to the dark stuff, they were already trapped.

I think the long gap between 2 and 3 allowed it time to grow in popularity while also making the biggest fans become overhyped in expectation of any new content.

punk rebel ecks posted:So what made the series explode in popularity for Season 3? I think it was partly because of the hype it'd been garnering in the press and online, but to a large degree I think it was part of a larger trend toward AMC and other non-premium cable networks starting to air really high quality adult drama and comedy. Previous to this point, HBO and to a lesser extent Showtime had bragging rights to "good cable TV." But AMC, FX and a few other channels started making series that really rivaled the premium channel stuff in quality around 2007-2010. (Mad Men, Nip/Tuck, Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, Always Sunny, Justified, etc) It was probably part of a larger trend, and it helped that Mad Men was a legitimately well written, acted, and produced series. Meanwhile, the big three networks kept making more and more dancing/singing/whatever shows, canned laff sitcoms, and endless CSI/NCIS/SVU spin-offs. That drove the 18-45 demographic to look for something else, and what they found was Mad Men. edit: Oh were you talking about R&M? Weltlich fucked around with this message at 22:22 on Apr 12, 2018 |

The gap between seasons 2 and 3, the show getting on Netflix and word of mouth generating a lot of buss is why R&M S3 was as known as it was.

When did the merchandise really start to hit the stores? That's got to help interest as well and distinguish it from just another goofy random adult swim show.

OmegaBR posted:When did the merchandise really start to hit the stores? That's got to help interest as well and distinguish it from just another goofy random adult swim show. After the first season before the second season, I found Rick and Morty shirts at the store. Then when I saw that Monopoly, that was for me the turning point. It got to a pretty insane level then and it didn’t stop. Once Funko started releasing those toys I think is when it fully hit the mainstream. Toys were everywhere. Target, Walmart, Toys r us, any comic book store, or book store. Rick and Morty was there. The McDonald’s thing was the natural tipping point. On a side note, I guess when I was drunk I got tickets to a Rick and Morty pub crawl. I can see how fun that sounded at first but now I’m not even sure I want to go. I can’t imagine anything more obnoxious than a bunch of costumed Rick and Morty fans going bar to bar across Denver on a Saturday night. Don’t drink and use Facebook. Actually don’t use Facebook.

Like the local con here is cool to dress up and meet other fans and that’s always been a good experience but apparently a hundred people? But you get drink specials a free shot and a “portal to another dimension”. I don’t know what that is but I don’t know if I want to find out. Either it’s going to be a bunch of obnoxious fans running around or like 5 people dressed up like Rick burping and yelling about pickles. Either way I think I’m passing. I think the big thing that helped this show in becoming more popular is how one is rewarded by rewatching episodes. You watch it once, and it's pretty great, go back and watch again, and you're treated to all sorts of little things you couldn't have noticed the first time. Like during the Cronenberg episode, you can't really catch at first how Rick used that thing from the Interdimensional Cable episode to scope out other suitable universes.

The flip side, of course, is that over the air numbers are far less relevant than they used to be-it matters a lot less to Adult Swim now how many people watched Rick and Morty at 11 PM on Saturday, when they have far more accurate numbers on how many logged on to adultswim.com to stream it, how many people watched the episodes through On Demand, or how many people are actively binging the show on Netflix or Hulu.

(ex: how many people are binging breaking bad? if a lot maybe we should run ads on AMC)

It also allows them to generate bullet-proof buzz: hard to burst the critical bubble if you never know no one is watching. Their programming budget is so big they can waste money on prestige projects and as long as subscriptions keep going up, they don't have to justify any specific expenditure.

So I decided to buy all the comics while I begin the long wait for S4, and I really enjoyed the first trade. They are better than I thought they’d be and once I got into the rhythm of hearing things in my head in the character’s voices instead of my own voice I was definitely struggling to put it down. It also has a really amazing throwaway Summer joke that makes me love her.
