This is all very cool, thanks for posting them. I always thought it would be super difficult to design 3D transformer type stuff. Is it quite a struggle to think, or easier than you might guess?

Most artists don't want do it. Its the only reason I can stay employed. I would say its very "Mike Rowe, find a job that no one wants to do and then do it" It made my brain hurt a quite a bit at first to design robot animations, and things that are mechanical that animate. but then I began to get better at it. and there are lots of ways to cheat, as well as make it easier for yourself. I specialize in Props and Backgrounds so doing (animation style) robots, house interiors, spaceships/scifi interiors and other complicated perspective work is my thing. I am by no means a master at it. but it is the career path I have chosen.

So when animating all this stuff how much is CG and how much is hand-drawn?

vehicles are hand drawn (on a computer) but we use the 3d model as a guide. and then we trace over it and animate on top of it. sort of like how they did back in the days of 101 Dalmatians, except with maya models and and cintiqs instead of paper cars and film.

Just imagine this except with canadian 20 something's posing and taking pictures of Jerry's Car, and then tracing it. And then I'm over in the corner furiously sculpting the next model and screaming at maya.

If I had to guess from the look of it its mostly hand-drawn (although almost assuredly computer assisted animation) and the CG is probably just used to get an idea of perspective, but I could be totally wrong.

That's actually something I wanted to ask Typical, were those robot CG renders used for the actual show footage or were those like study images for perspective?

and yes alot of times the model is just simply for reference. but only if the prop is especially hard to draw. like obviously i wouldn't just waste my time 3d modeling a milk cartoon. but spaceships on the other hand...

There are many 3d models i want to show you this season but ya'll will have to wait.

3D is not a very big part of the show, in each episode less than 10 seconds usually, but it helps a lot to work this way and the payoff is that the show never looks flat.

His work is A+ and we have used him to do all kinds of 3D stand in stuff. We split up this season about 50/50 between the two of us. Though he is by far the superior 3D guy. I usually just give him 1 sketch of a spaceship or something and he turns around a complete model in just a few days.

What up goons, I spent nearly a year waste deep in season 3 and then another 6 months waiting for animation to wrap up so I'm glad you all finally get to see it. I can now show you guys some behind the scenes stuff I've been really excited about.

I presume you all saw, Episode 2. Well here are some of the cars I worked on.

A Cadillac Eldorado. This one i got to design my self. and the two chicks on top are 2 of the girls at the office.

A Karmann Ghia for Rick Mort and Summer.

Here is the 3D model I made for it as well. (we needed to see it from so many angles that I opted to 3d model it instead of drawing it by hand every time)

a 57 Chevy for Rick

and Here's the 3d Model.

Now here are some office life highlights from season 3 which I will share with you goons because you all are so special to me.

Justin bought a 360 camera and attached it to a to RC car and drive it around the office. He could also yell at people through a small wireless speaker he had installed on it.

This was the Season of the GAMING PC INVASION. squanchtendo rents a room in the office and as that operation gets staffed up, so do the number of LED covered gaming computer cases, Razor mice, Asus gaming routers and other monstrous equipment. I for one was quite happy to see all the gamer hardware as normally studio environments are full of macs, and I just love those gaudy LED lights and fan noises so much, it takes me back to my highschool days.

I brought my drone to the office once and attempted to fly it. how ever I didn't realize that years worth of dust and construction debris had built up in the rafters and I stirred it all up and covered an entire area of the office in a thick volcanic like ash.

This was the year we all discovered H3H3, and most of the design team was watching Ethan and Hila while we worked. One BG artist snuck in a "vape nation" into a background of the destroyed Seattle city in episode 2. Ethan and Hila came to he premiere party and every one wanted to meet them.

this was the year of FREEE MERCHANDISE. companies would send Justin TONS of gamer gear and other swag and eventually he got so much that he had to start giving it away in raffles. I got a pair of gamer headphones that looked really neat (LED's and all that garbage). But I ended up giving them away to another coworker because I already have a really well functioning set of Logitech ones. I regretted that decision immediately because i was then informed that the headphones were worth 250$ and could have easily been resold.

This was the season of the RETURN OF VANILLA WORLD OF WARCRAFT. A big private wow server was launched in January and I some how convinced 7 people to make characters with me on it. We had our own private guild and we even got to do a level 30 dungeon before every one eventually quit. I live streamed a few dungeons with my co workers and every day would would check in and tell each other how little sleep we had gotten and what our current level was. ( i stayed until 60 and started raiding but the private server scene is too hardcore for me and then I eventually quit as well)

There are some other highlights but I cant remember them all. anyways, You all are very special to me. keep on debating that Mulan sauce or what ever it is you guys do.

Typical, how much of those designs is part of the "requirements" given to you, and how much is your own creativity? I am sure at some point someone told you "We need a post-apoc car for Rick to drive in the chase scene", but, for example, did they specify that it should have those triangular treads instead of tires, or was that your own input?

Some of the cars had really specific requirements like hemorrhage's ship truck tank thing. (they kept asking for more chains and treads and for it to be bigger) at one point they also wanted a war rig just like in mad max, except ours would have a hotub on the end. but that got cut eventually thank god. There was no requirements for the pink Cadillac, I just knew it had to be a convertible because in the storyboards two chicks jumped out of it.

Most of the designs we were just allowed to explore what ever we wanted. if we drew 10 designs we would shows the higher ups and then they would pick their favorites and or we would make adjustments from there. one designer drew a bunch of 90's themed mad max cars like Geo's and ford escorts. but those never made it in. The whole car design process was a bit of a fire though and it was about to boil out of control because the designs were too complicated and it was going to take too long to draw 16 cars, and the requirements of the cars were getting too lofty. I had to put my foot down and re draw 9 cars in one day and show the other 2 designers how it should look. (i was working at Disney during the day and freelancing for RNM at night at the time so i couldn't be in the office to control the designs)

The Chevy has its own story how ever.

One of or designers was ex disney feature. he had never worked in prime time before and he hadnt learned the style of rick and morty yet. (he eventually did and was amazing at it) but at the time he was really missing the mark in terms of what rick and morty looks like. he drew this.

Now that is an excellent drawing and has great ideas but for rick and Morty that is unacceptable. no would could ever animate that. and it would be a nightmare to draw other angles of it.

I revised it to this:

Which has the level of detail appropriate for animation and adult comedy. still keeping all his great ideas. and then I made the 3d model. I sort of played around with the design some more while i was modeling and beefed up the treads as well as made the car more narrowed and caricatured. I then gave the 3d Model to our other designer, He traced it, color team colored it, and we got this.

which is what you see in the show.

The other thing to know is that there are 3 Prop designers now. VS last year when I just did everything myself. so quite a few people had a say in what things should look like and we all worked on each others drawings

Did any of the cars stay as 3D models, or were they all drawn during those chases? I know in Futuruama, they started using 3D models to save time on things that would take forever to animate.

No, nothing in final animation is 3d. The animators just trace it/ rotoscope it. Every thing that Mutata said is accurate. its a method of brute force that worked out for us for many reasons. one is that I am too dumb to figure out how to set up the toon shaders and pipeline necessary to integrate 3d and 2d seamlessly. and #2 Justin specifically said he wanted everything to be hand draw. so its cheap and effective and we don't need a team of people to do a bunch of CGI work. just me and Mutata

I just want to say that being involved in a whole other realm of design (teaching Game Design) I absolutely love how you took that first image that wasn't suitable for the show and brought it into the Rick & Morty universe while keeping all its heart and details intact. It's really easy to change things but it's literally just like the same design went from one universe to another in a way that the original designer would still feel was identifiably his.

Thank you. I wanted to keep everything possible i could about that design because it was so drat good. it just needed to be run through a filter essentially.

Bust Rodd posted:

Wait, Typical, if you were the prop designer for the earlier seasons, does that mean you designed the original Plumbus?

Also the idea that you got to sit down with that talented Disney artists and say "Naw dawg, THIS is how we do it at Rock & Morty" is truly gangster AF.

You'll find both of these answers disappointing but the truth is.

I "did" draw the plumbus and do its final line work and turn around. but it was created by the storyboard artist. I basically traced his drawings and did the technical work to make it animate correctly (design the turn around and special poses)

It sounds Gangster but it was actually somewhat humiliating. I was looking at this guy who is clearly a better artist than me and dumbing down his beautiful drawing. but in the end he made the transition to the style and some of the best props in the season are his. He is a fantastic RnM artist now. However that is an industry trope that Disney people don't do well in adult cartoons. There are many stories of ex disney artists who went to the Simpsons and could never master that style, eventually got frustrated and left. But very good artists can always switch between styles if given enough time.

PostNouveau posted:

I know you mostly do object work, but I saw a behind-the-scenes thing about this episode that talked to the character artists, and they pointed out that every background person in this episode was unique. How do they manage to make so many characters that still look like Rick and Morty characters? Is there some in-house style book that lays out "This is the proportions we're using, and if you stick to them, everyone will look like they belong seamlessly"?

Well that's really a question that apply's to all animation, "how do we generate characters in set style" the truth is there are SOME set rules and some set guidelines (such as hands feet and eyes). And a character designer already understands the basics of what types of things you can get away with in all animation, because they have studied those sorts of things. We actually do have a PDF that has some rick and morty specific rules listed out and some example drawings. but not as many as you think. Once you master the basics you can start churning out new designs. also you can break the rules too and the style of rick and morty is somewhat forgiving. you can get away with quite a lot. Also there multiple tiers of artists that can help take a drawing and fine tune it. You'll have a character designer who draws 10 characters, then they submit that to the lead character artist (who is more experienced) that person makes corrections or tells them to try something else. and then that is submitted to the art director (the person with the MOST experience) who has the final say. and They might make another level of corrections. after that Justin might take a look at it and tell you if he wants any changes as well. after a drawing goes through all the proper channels it probably integrates into the show seamlessly. This sort of pipeline applies to most animation.
