Is this the most favoured matchup the capitals have had in recent memory? I know they were the 1 seed vs. montreal in the quarterfinals before when they were Halak'd. But I imagine montreal still had a few people feeling they could make a splash.

Literally every single prediction is picking washington at 4-1 or 4-0, which is very obvious. I'm just surprised there's not even a homer wanting to throw toronto a game 6 or game 7 bone.

They were super heavily favored over Philly last year too. We barely squeaked in to the WC2 spot.

The Montreal series was a bigger mismatch. Everyone was predicting a sweep, and a more pronounced one that what people are predicting now. Saying it's very obvious that is dumb as hell, and the 2010 series is a good reason for that. The Capitals outplayed Montreal by a staggering degree, and a goaltending matchup that should have been pretty close turned into a gigantic chasm. There are no series now or in the past 20 years where you should have been that surprised to see an upset, because it takes one goaltender having the series of his life to shift any matchup.

I meant it's the very obvious as expected. Not for certain. I expect the leafs to win in 7. :getting:

Neuvirth played absolutely out of his mind one game last year (game 5?) and had a 44 save shutout on the Caps while the flyers only managed 11 shots.

The flyers were already a dead team walking at that point but yeah a goalie getting hot at the right time can absolutely steal a series

The Leafs are a nice story of rookies playing well, but at the end of the day they're a 42 loss team going up against a team that has won the President's Trophy twice in a row.

That 2010 Capitals team had huge question marks on defense and in goal. Honestly I'd be more surprised at them losing this year because their best of all time playoff goaltender would have to be average and Andersen will have to get red hot because I can't really see the Leafs winning the possession battle, especially now that Zaitsev is out for at least one game.

you just know that if the leafs win game 1 or something there's going to be a not-insignificant chunk of the caps fanbase that starts getting nervous against their better judgement. plus the leafs can't break anybody's hearts without first giving them hope, so basically we should all hope the leafs win a game or two

Toronto has no defense, Caps have top 3? offense and number 1 defense. Austin Matthews might be good enough to steal a single win for his team, but otherwise it's the Caps series to lose. As long as Ovi hits somebody really hard in the first 5 minutes, the rest of the team will settle in and play their game.

The Leafs came on strong in the second half and were 12-6-2 over the last six weeks of the season. I still think the Caps win fairly handily, but this isn't a cakewalk by any means. They're a well coached team riding high on exceeded expectations with nothing to lose. Teams like that give contenders saddled with the weight of a hungry fanbase fits. Win or lose, Leafs walk out of this series with their heads held high. You can't say the same for the Caps.

Also the Habs beat the Pens in a similar fashion that year and it was an amazing time to be a Habs fan, up until they burnt down part of the city shat themselves against Philly. I was 5 years old in 93 and so 2010 was definitely the best Habs series I could see in real time and fully grasp what was going on.

To be honest, as a Caps fan I find a lot of solace that so many of our playoff collapses have been against either eventual Cup champs or against teams that were not having a one-off gently caress DC moment.

Though "a lot of solace" = basically none at all and I am hollow inside.
