GM and Standard Oil knew the dangers of adding tetraethyl lead to gasoline, but went through with it anyway because it could be patented, unlike alcohol-derived additives such as ethanol or methanol. The addition of shitloads of lead to the environment, especially in dense urban areas, was partially responsible for the sudden increase in crime in big cities. The phasing out of lead in gasoline in the 70's was partially what lead to the sudden drop of crime in the 90's. Broken Window Theory didn't do jack poo poo. The CIA is institutionally focused towards short term goals and so everything they do is for short term gain and it ends up causing more problems in the long run. Any coverups are because the people involved are trying to cover their own asses. The TV broadcasts for the early Apollo missions, and especially Apollo 12 where the astronauts actually broke the TV cameras, were partially faked by the TV networks so that they'd have SOMETHING to show to the people watching on TV during times when the astronauts weren't broadcasting TV, even though the air to ground voice communication and film photos and 16mm footage was genuine. Bush and Cheney didn't take the threat of Al Qaeda seriously when they came into office, Cheney was focused on Iraq and Hussein as the only major threat to US interests, and Bush was concerned about domestic issues. Bush's reshuffling of the FBI in the wake of the Robert Hanssen scandal very early on in the Bush admin pulled the field agents who had been tracking the hijackers off of surveillance of them, leading to several of them slipping the net.

Shortly after FDR was elected, a group of businessmen were very concerned that his New Deal programs were going to hurt their bottom line financially. So they approached Marine Corps Major-General Smedley Butler and told him that they had recruited 500,000 ex-WWI veterans (they didn't) and said "hey would you mind leading them in a coup so we can overthrow Roosevelt and get rid of all this New Deal poo poo that's going to make us not-quite-as-rich, maybe have a difference president who's a bit more fash?" So of course, Butler did the right thing, said "what the actual gently caress is this poo poo?" and blabbed it to the press and congress, who started a committee to investigate it, which sadly ended up becoming the predecessor to the more infamous HUAC in the 1950's. Here's a bizarrely mundane theory I just heard for the Kennedy assassination. Kennedy wasn't Oswald's target at all, he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Lee Harvey Oswald was actually trying to kill Governor Connally because he had a grudge against him for brushing off his request to have Marines to change his discharge status back to honorable from undesirable. (Oswald was originally given an honorable discharge, then when he defected to the USSR after his discharge, it was changed after the fact to undesirable, and he wanted to change it back to honorable so he could actually get a job)
