The other day I saw someone on facebook make a quote from Allen Gregory and I thought "wow there are people out there that actually liked this show?" Wasn't Allen Gregory some kind of prodigy child who was a massively successful playwright in early promotional material? That seemed to be lost and he just became some terrible poo poo child that talked over and down to everyone and for some reason everyone kowtowed to him constantly. I remember reading that the way he talked was modeled on how Hollywood agents talked, why was that thought to be a good inflection for a character to have as viewers would be unfamiliar with it. I completely forgot that Jeff (because he looks like Jeff Winger from Community, which works with the other guy looking like Dean Pelton) was basically an abused spouse.

There seemed to be a lot of terrible animated shows in the 2000s that tried to be like Sealab and do anti-humor style jokes, that just never worked. You'd get insane stuff being said by one character and the rest of the cast just standing around awkwardly. I remember 12oz Mouse having a lot of that. I used to think Tom Goes to Mayor was like that buy after watching Awesome Show Good Job I understood what they were going for, but I still don't like the show. Mostly becuase almost every character in the show is just repulsive.

precision posted:You should give 12 oz. Mouse another shot. It was actually pretty brilliant and definitely hilarious in its own unique way. It's one of the few "anti-humor" things that ended up being actually funny: If that was the best of the show, I don't think it works.

TheRationalRedditor posted:It doesn't, it's monotone monkeycheese trash. It's even more humiliating because PFFR was a year away from being picked up by Adult Swim with 'Xavier: Renegade Angel ' to victory lap with exactly what a brilliant, consistently clever joke-packed dadaist tapestry lovingly forged by talented people looks like See, that's it, its two guys just saying random poo poo back and forth that has no timing or punchlines. Xavier looked like garbage but once I actually watched it it was really absurdist in the best kind of way. I preferred Lucy Daughter of the Devil though. There was also Perfect Hair Forever which felt like someone who once saw a cover of an anime DVD and decided to do a parody of it, but then it only was like 4 episodes or something? I also had no idea Squidbillys was still going after 13 seasons. You know what I loved, even if it was basically just a reskinned Archer? Moonbeam City. It only got one season, but I read it was really expensive, which probably not surprising because the core cast was Elizabeth Banks, Rob Lowe and Kate Mara. It had the most amazing soundtrack and I became a big fan of Night Club because of it.

Oh yea, i wasn't knocking Squidbillies, I was just surprised it had been on so long. And yea, Moonbeam was pretty strong near the end of the season, they started leaning more heavily on its retro near future ultra 80s Nagel aspect than just being Archer. Like the episode with Dazzels father who he actually has a good relationship with. There are few things I can think of that were worse than Allen Gregory. Like all those terrible sitcoms Fox kept putting between the Simpsons and Family guy like Princes of Malibu or Sons of Tucon, The Pitts, Sit Down, bad animated shows like Shut up (i honestly thought goons kept defending this show because it had a bunch of AD cast in it) andThe God, Devil and Bob. It's worse than all of those. It would take something like Food Fight or the Ooglieloves and the Great Balloon Adventure to sink deeper than Allen Gregory. But even then, nether of those are as evil or hateful and Allen Gregory was. AG is only equivalent to those terrible racist cartoons from the mid 20th century that they don't show anymore.

I am trying to remember why I watched all of Allen Gregory, at least at first. It was fun to poo poo over the show in the thread, but I think I was at first hoping the show would improve. That's what happened with Bob's Burgers. At first I didn't think the show was very good, it's episodes were all "how is the restaurant going to go out of business this week!", then they had the one with the documentary film maker with the cow that ended up in their living room and Gene runs out going "everyone pee on the floor!" and bam, good show. I also realized that the art style at first glance looks good, but then you realize that it looks like Bitstrips.

TheRationalRedditor posted:Moonbeam City was dope and mostly funny, so it's an invalid choice. Suffer Well Yea, Moonbeam City is legit good. It's not great or an animation classic like Venture Bros or Archer will be, but its solid and funny, and seriously Night Club is crazy good. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oz57_qdRSxc the full song that was the intro is great. The singer looks so much like an Ex of mine I honestly thought it was her at first. I never watched Chozen, and never heard of Unsupervised so I'd love to hear about either of them. The whole thing in this last episode of the show with the battle of having the trendiest adopted child strikes me as one of those things some old white guy writer who thinks "All these liberal celebrities with their hoards of brown kids they've adopted, I'm gonna really stick it to them and show how its just a fashion accessory!" in the same way they think they're gonna stick it to PC SJWs these days. Also haha rape! *imagines a boot stomping on Jonah Hill's face over and over*

As Nero Danced posted:Did Jonah Hill ever offer an apology for this? I wouldn't forgive him but to at least acknowledge he left a steaming pile of poo poo in the bowl and didn't flush would improve him a tiny bit in my eyes. If i remember correctly he was all "It's too bad TV audiences are too stupid to see the genius of Allen Gregory" or something when asked about the criticisms.

According to someone I know who worked on Clone High, it was canceled because they got an angry letter about the portrayal of Gandhi, and pulled the plug. Mission Hill was a brilliant show that was far ahead of its time that got like a dozen episodes because it was shoved off on the USA network. I bet if it had been an Adult Swim show it would have had like 4 solid seasons.
