...Is this on? Ms. Chouno, please come to the faculty office at once.
What could this be…?

Surely it won’t be a ruse like the last eight times!

I’m off to the faculty office, so make sure you study on your own.

This woman’s skills were amazing, but I can’t help but feel shocked by how brazen she was…

Morgana just feels threatened by strong, independent women, naturall—oh wait she was a murderer

Goodness, there are so many ways to trick people. So many secret techniques and maneuvers… I’m sure you learned a bit more about the Proficiency you’ll need to smoothly get by in this world.

Maaku gains Proficiency +3.

Music: Beneath the Mask -Rain (Instrumental Version)

Now, it’s raining, so we can’t hang out with most of our Confidants. Therefore, we should do something we’ve never done before:

Read in the library!

There’s danger afoot in the internet world too, it seems.

On these irregularly broadcast specials, we share limited-edition items that are all the rage! Today, we’re talking about the Angel Tart from the Taisho Store! It’s available till Christmas!
Oh, I love Angel Tarts. I’ll buy them, even if I have to wait in long lines to get them. When I see these on the shelf at the store, it makes me feel like Christmas is almost here.

Despite this offer being made today, this item is not actually available for purchase just yet. Odd.

We’ve had this game console set up in the attic for some time now, let’s go use it.

We can play one level per night, so with all these games we’re probably not going to be able to get the trophy for beating all of them. However, we’re playing this game for a different reason. It doesn’t actually matter which game we select for our own purposes tonight as long as we don’t pick Gambla Goemon.

Music: Star Forneus

Whoa… You’re blasting away the enemy ships one by one… Not bad for a beginner. Oh, there aren’t any enemies on screen now… Did you win?

Hey, I think you’re supposed to aim for the core in the middle. Try focusing your fire on it!

We get seven seconds to press it twenty-five times.

Just hammer that X button.

Music: Everyday Days

I bet jumping into the enemy barrage increased your Guts.

Maaku gains Guts +2. You only get the social stat upgrade and complete the level if you finish the prompt given to you. This is why we didn’t want to choose Gambla Goemon, a game rooted in luck. We don’t need the social stats at this point, but I’d still rather complete the level so it doesn’t feel like I just wasted a time slot.

Sine, cosine, and tangent. This is where a lot of people aren’t able to keep up. Why would you panic just from seeing a graph? I don’t get it. A complicated formula gets condensed down to a single line… Isn’t it simple and elegant? All of them have distinctive shapes that stimulate the imagination. Now then, Hamiru-san. Take a look at these graphs.

That’s correct.

Likewise, D is called the devil’s curve because it looks like a Chinese yo-yo called a diabolo.

“Chinese yo-yo” is probably just one of those fake drug names from that Twitter bot that posts made-up Ice T quotes from SVU.

Are you sure? Math is pretty Satanic in my book.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

Some people may think of math as an enemy like a devil…

Gah! The script predicted my joke!

...But there’s research that suggests that people who excel at math have higher incomes. If you’re shooting for a higher salary, sometimes you need to be willing to fight demons.

A little on-the-nose, game.

Honestly, I feel like fighting demons would be easier than trying to understand graphs like that…

Now that we’ve played a video game, we can buy a book of game secrets from the Shinjuku bookstore.

I see Shido-san sometimes when I’m walking around town. I got to shake his hand! His smile really left a big impression on me.
I’ve been hearing a lot about this Shido. I hope popularity isn’t all that he’s got to offer.

Mwehehe! You’re free, right? There’s something I really wanna talk to you about. It’d be awesome if you could make some time for me.

OK! Let’s go to your room then.

Music: What’s Going On?

And believe it or not, she replied.

“She asked me how I got her email address and then blocked me.”

We even ended up talking on the phone about elementary school. She said the only reason she got mad at me about her diary was because she was embarrassed. Apparently she thought I would hate her if I knew about her secrets… so she ran away. I guess me and her are pretty much the same after all. Long story short… we made up! I finally apologized to her.

I’m surprised you’re so excited about it… but I’m glad. Anyway, it’s too far to actually visit each other, so we’ve been sending emails back and forth. We even made a promise recently… to both go to high school next year. Y’know… there’s no way I would’ve been able to call her and apologize before.

Oh, I almost forgot! Kana-chan was really surprised the Phantom Thieves listened to her request. She’ll never know the truth of the matter though… Mwehehe! I’ve finally finished that promise. “Get along with Kana-chan”… Um… This is really important, so I’m gonna say it again… Thank you, Maaku. Wait a second… I never even said it the first time. I guess that means I’ll just have to say it again now! Thank you, Maaku. Seriously.
I can feel a strong bond of trust from Futaba…

Um, is it OK if I ask you for a favor real quick? I mean, I just finished a super-old promise.

Music: Alright (Elp Version)

C-Can you… pat me on the head? Mom used to do it when she was happy with me. Just… pat pat. ...Can you do it?

Uhhh, okay?

Whoaaa!

M-My heart…! M-My face…! It feels like they’re on fire! *pant* *pant* C-Calm down, Futaba…

Phew… Looks like that strange outburst is finally over. My heart’s still beating real hard, but I’m totally good now. Sorry for making you worry. I just remembered… I still have one more promise to do. “Being OK without you around.” ...Is that really possible? Meh, I’ll find out some other day! Peace out!
I walked Futaba home...

Music: Beneath the Mask

Once you send that calling card, there’s no turning back. Make sure you finish preparations tonight.

Topics of safety, particularly how to deal with the Phantom Thieves, are receiving a lot of attention. The key to winning the election will likely be how the parties address this challenge.
Are they just using us as scapegoats? They really just do whatever serves their interests…

I’m going to the church with Futaba. Sorry, but you’re coming along too.

We’re going to visit Wakaba’s grave. We’re leaving soon. Get ready in three minutes.

Sojiro Rank 10

I’ve been so busy with the shop and all… No, that’s not it… The guilt is what kept me from coming, I thought Wakaba would be angry with me…

Music: Sunset Bridge

I sure kept her waiting… but it felt good to tell her about how much Futaba’s improved lately. Oh… I told her about you too.

Huh… This is the first time the four of us are all together.

This is what my real smile looks like.
I approve.

Futaba walks away.

Oh, I have some news. The family court gave me a call the other day. Futaba’s uncle decided to retract his report. It was ‘cause of you, wasn’t it?

Busted.

I’m sure she’ll make a fine lady either way. After all… she is Wakaba’s daughter. *sigh* Do all fathers have to go through this anxiety…?

But you showed me so much more… You showed me I have a family I need to protect. Not just Futaba… But you too. I may not always be reliable, but feel free to come to me if anything happens. I’ll be there for you… as family. And… Ah, I know. I’ll teach you everything I can. You’re a full-fledged man now. That might not be enough to return the favor… but it’s all I can do.
I feel a strong bond with Sojiro...

Music: The Spirit

Master Curry allows us to make curry that restores even more SP to all our allies. We still haven’t made curry yet, but we’ll go into it in a bit.

Sojiro… Sojiro is loving great. He’s played by Jamieson Price, who just kills it. What an amazing character, and what an amazing performance.

Music: Sunset Bridge

No problem, man. I wouldn’t do that to you, for one. Second, we had a weird head-pat moment earlier today and it just cemented how odd our whole relationship is.

I can’t imagine you calling me “father”… Although, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad…

Make up your drat mind.

Nothing!

Yeah, yeah…

Now, there’s actually a slightly different version of this scene that plays if you get it before Sojiro finds out you’re a Phantom Thief. He’ll just wonder if Futaba’s uncle had a change of heart instead of pretty much knowing you did it yourself, so it doesn’t change much.

Exactly. The correct answer is the summit of Mt. Fuji.

However, what affects it most is altitude. So, excluding the outlying islands, the sun rises earliest on Mt. Fuji.

Maaku gains Knowledge +1.

That said, who knows when dawn will ever come for this country. The government and police are completely incompetent. Those Phantom Thieves need to be caught before anything else.
Just you watch… We’ll show you who’s just.

Later…

Anyways, tomorrow’s finally it! I hope everyone remembers!
The date of our plan? Of course we remember.
That means we’re sending out the calling card today, right?
Yes, today is our only option. The police have yet to actually make a move, but I am certain we have reached our limits.
We wanted to wait as long as possible to make Makoto’s sister panic… right?
Yes. Taking that into account, today would be the best option. We can speak in more detail about this after school. I will tell Akechi-kun as well.
All right, see y’all at Leblanc!

Music: Suspicion

Ain’t this place always empty though?

Everyone here is a witness.
U-Uh, I was just jokin’…
Um, we’re supposed to be discussing where we should send the calling card…
Considering how big the hype’s gotten, she’ll prolly just think it’s a prank, won’t she?
I could always put it on Sae-san’s desk. People know me there, so I could gain access easily.
That’s not a good idea. If you’re the only one who can get in there, it’ll easily be traced back to you.

Yeah, detective. Geez, what a moron.

...I’ll do it. I can just tell her it came for her in the mail. That would be the least risky method. No matter what she asks, I’ll tell her I don’t know anything.
But Makoto, that’s…
You’re our leader, so this will be up to you. Should we leave the calling card to Makoto?

Is that… really the only way...?
I’ll be OK. I’ve already traversed far more dangerous ground than this.
We will leave it to you then. Thank you for agreeing to this. I will need to step up my game as well to make up for it…
Very well then. We’ll enter from in front of the courthouse. Does six o’clock in the evening work for everyone?
Yup, got it.
Same as always.

Music: Disquiet

We continued talking after that… but I don’t remember about what… My memory is a haze...

All that’s left is to carry out the operation that Makoto outlined earlier.

Music: Desire

Oh, so Sae is envy. I… guess that makes sense? Sort of? If you squint?

“For its sake, you are even willing to promote injustice as justice… From, #Millennials…”
I found it in our mailbox…
To think they would send me one…

Sae crumples up the calling card Yusuke worked so hard on.

What nonsense! They only care about disposing of those who are an inconvenience for them! Fine… I’ll just have to catch them first!
And when you do… you’re going to interrogate them, right? In some kind of underground room, was it…?
Why do you ask?
Oh, I just remembered you mentioning something like that before…
That’s right. It will be in a special interrogation room underground. My time will be limited, but I will do whatever it takes to make them divulge their secrets…!

It’s late, but I should contact the director and let him know about this calling card…

Once that happens… why don’t we go on a trip to some hot springs? Just the two of us.

“I can yell at you just like old times. It’ll be great.”

Music: Days of Sisters

Sis… Um, I-I’m on your side!

Makoto begins crying.

*chuckle* What an odd girl…

I’ll head up to my room then.

There’s something I need to inform you of… I received a calling card from the Phantom Thieves. It was addressed to me directly and--

And you’ve transferred command of the investigation to someone else…!? No, of course not… Yes… I understand. I’ll remain on standby until further instructions… Please excuse me.

Uh-oh. That doesn’t sound good.

Music: Beneath the Mask

You always say that.

Thanks, Mako-chan. It’s all going according to plan then.
So, it has finally come to this. I actually feel somewhat nervous.
Don’t freak out so much that you screw up, all right?
You’re one to talk.
I ask that you go easy on me. Well then, see you tomorrow.
Hold on a sec! Crow, go over the operation again before you leave.
It is just as we discussed earlier, is it not?
This battle will decide our future. We must ensure we’re fully prepared beforehand.
Very well. Our objective is stealing Sae-san’s Treasure. We will meet at the courthouse at approximately 6 pm.

We’ll be relying on you.
What a wonderful, trusting relationship. I will do my best in this as well.
All right… We can’t afford any mistakes, especially not this time. Tomorrow’s a big day for us, so let’s give it our all!

Our special feature today is on Masayoshi Shido, who just might become our next prime minister.
Shido-san is popular as a man of the people. People really have high hopes in him as a politician.

There isn’t much you can do to prepare at this point, but make sure you give this all you’ve got.

...You know what I want to say, right? Make sure you don’t do anything rash, you got it?

Don’t worry, man. We got this.

Had to try.

We’ve never actually made curry, and it’s one of the three things we’re allowed to do on calling card days along with make infiltration tools and make coffee, so let’s do that. It’ll give me a chance to explain why it’s not actually that useful!

Hey, there are some leftover curry ingredients here!

Now, curry can only be made on specific days when the fridge has leftovers in it. Today, it does.

Making curry for tomorrow? That’s not a bad idea...

Normally we’d get a prompt asking us if we want to call Kawakami to do this for us, but it’s a calling card day so we can’t.

Oh, you’re cookin’ dinner…? I’m about to head home, but… Careful with the stove, all right?

Music: Break it Down (Elp Version)

...This curry really has a lot of ingredients, doesn’t it? Did I see you put fruit in there?

Now, we don’t get Confidant points with Sojiro for curry like we do with coffee, because he leaves and decides not to crap all over it. But you know what we do still get?

“LET ME EXPLAIN!” CURRY FACTS, MOTHERFUCKERS

Aww yiss, grated apples. Mild and delectable, bitches.

I wouldn’t think coffee would go with curry either, but there you go.

Ahh! It’s starting to smell good… I bet this will be a hit!

Maaku takes one bite and immediately starts wolfing it down. Take it easy, man. We need some of that for the Palace.

This curry has a lot of thought and love behind it, huh… Maybe if you eat it in the Metaverse, it’ll heal your wounds too.

Master Curry restores 100 SP to all allies. Unfortunately, curry is a food item, meaning it is only usable out of battle, as Jeff and Vinny discovered during the infamous TaP Soda incident. This isn’t necessarily a huge problem; Haru’s vegetables have the same restriction (Only the Sun Tomatoes have this restriction, oddly enough. In addition to what follows here it just means there's no reason to ever make Sun Tomatoes). The main problem with curry though is that until you get to Sojiro’s Rank 10, which upgrades it from 50 (?) to 100 SP, you need a bunch of it if you’re really hurting for SP.

There’s an interesting trade-off here with the veggies, which don’t take a time slot but do take time to grow, vs. the coffee and curry. Haru’s Sun Tomatoes restore the same amount of SP for the party, but honestly once you get Kawakami to Rank 9 and she quits her job you can have her be doing stuff for you every night with no penalty, so why not just have her make curry and use all of Haru’s gardening time on full-SP-restore Moonlight Carrots? I went into this writeup thinking curry was useless (and I had my reasoning, as we head into the endgame the later bosses are all marathons, so SP restore you can’t use in battle is worthless for them), but honestly, it has its uses.

By the way, there’s really no reason to make coffee once you get Master Curry unless you just need to give Kawakami something to do, they restore the same amount of SP but the latter is partywide.

There might come a time you’ll be asked to serve it to someone. It wouldn’t be a waste to practice. We should rest now, we have a big day tomorrow.

We certainly do. Buckle up kids, because poo poo’s about to get nuts.

IIRC, there's actually more changes than that: the Rank 10 event does have him figuring out you're in the Phantom Thieves (same as all the others), and when the plot event comes up later it drops the equivalent lines about your membership and just focuses on "why did Futaba get a card?".

It's not much in the grand scheme of things, but it's still basically the only time in the game a plot event acknowledges a Confidant's progress, so :)

Yeah, considering you're blocked from progressing Sojiro until you've established a link with Futaba, and by that point you might be spinning a bunch of different plates Social Link-wise... it's a surprise to me there's a different version of that scene too.

That's not right; I very distinctly remember getting Sojiro's Rank 10 scene before the plot event where he finds the calling card you gave Futaba, and it stood out to me that he was the only non-party member Confidant up to that point who didn't figure out that I was a Phantom Thief.

It's because Futaba is a gigantic anime dork and anime dorks are obsessed with headpats.

Also a Persona-themed side story sounds like a shockingly plausible fit for Yakuza. If we're going by the usual Yakuza formula, Kiryu probably misunderstands what fighting someone's shadow means and punches them in real life, but still manages to get through so everyone can live happily ever after.

Sae kind of makes sense as "jealousy," as opposed to envy -- not the desire for what others have (though a woman working in a male-dominated field would probably covet the kind of success that just gets handed to people who don't work nearly as hard, but I digress), but the desire to safeguard her existing success at any cost.

Please tell me you are going to recreate the entire intro sequence, complete with the same Persona. I always wanted to know if it was possible.

It totally is. Utilizing the various functions of the Velvet Room, you can have a properly leveled Arsene with good skills. It takes alot of planning beforehand to do so however

Part 148: 11/19: Breaking The Bank

Anon: Oh how far they’ve fallen

Music: Life Will Change (Listen to this, it’s the version with lyrics this time!)

What of the calling card, Makoto?
I showed it to Sis… She took it from my very own hands…
Makoto…
I understand how you feel, but you mustn’t be so downtrodden.
Yeah… If we screw this up, we’re done for. It’s way more than losin’ the place we belong… We could even lose our lives here, y’know.
It will be all right. I want to save my sister, no matter what.
Is everyone decided?
Mm-hm! All’s well that ends well!
So much has happened since we first started… You guys have become quite the reliable team. All right, Joker! This is the Phantom Thieves’ final heist! Give us the signal!

All we need to do is head back to where we saw the Treasure earlier.

As she planned…!?
No… Was the Treasure put on display to lure us here!?
So that’s why we could faintly see its shape…
First off, allow me to compliment you. I never expected you would be able to make it this far…
We would much rather have the Treasure than your words of praise. Where did you hide it?

*chuckle* Come. We shall put an end to this once and for all.
It seems as though she wants us to pursue her…
Dammit, she’s mockin’ us…! Let’s go after her!

Is everyone ready to go?

All right then, let’s go!
Sis… I’ll protect you…

Music: Blood of Villain

No matter what you bring out, we will emerge victorious.

I only guided you here because this place allows me to fight to my heart’s content.
Sis…
When my father died in the line of duty, I hated his killer from the bottom of my heart. Dying to uphold justice sounds virtuous, but the ones left behind have to clean up the mess! Can you imagine the hardships I had to endure!?

She’s lost control…
This is wrong…
Justice cannot yield to evil! I must win, no matter what!
This is nothing more than self-righteousness…

Shadow Sae Appears

Shadow Sae snaps her fingers, and the sounds of machinery starting up can be heard.

Is this…

A roulette wheel! Oh boy, more bullshit!

What is she intending…?
No more coins or playin’ games! We ain’t followin’ your drat rules!
Oh you will. There is no room for negotiation.

Now… come at me!

You’ll save her, right?
*nod*
All right everyone, be on alert!

Boss: Shadow Sae

Music: Blooming Villain

Let’s do this fair and square!

So, the first thing we notice is that she doesn’t have a fancy demon name to go along with her sin. We’ll see about that.

The next thing we notice is that after four consecutive Heavy/Severe attacks, the enemy’s HP hasn’t decreased by a single pixel. Something’s up here.

A ball begins zooming around the roulette wheel, which is now spinning.

Now, let us play a game of roulette. The stakes will be… our lives. Of course, acts of violence are forbidden here. One must follow the rules.
We already told you, there’s no way we’re gonna follow your rules anymore!
That’s fine by me. Such troublesome people will just face the penalty…

gently caress YOUR RULES

In that case, it’s time you be penalized!

What the gently caress!?

Those who cannot follow rules are not to be tolerated. That is simply how society operates.
Ngh…!

So… yeah. The penalty is having your HP reduced to 1. It’s nothing to gently caress around with, and there’s no reason to attack in the first place since her HP doesn’t go down.

Now, the time has come for our first round. Choose where you will place your bet!
I’m almost positive she’s going to try and cheat, but even if we bring that up, she’d just ignore us. We should go along with the game for now and try to gain evidence on her methods of cheating.
...I agree.

Well, how will you bet?
How should I bet…?

Where will the ball fall…? Red or black…?

Have you made your decision? Then let’s see the results!

We lost, of course. It’s naturally impossible to win while she’s cheating.

She drains 100 HP from each of us. If we’d picked the high-return bet, she’d have drained 150 from each of us, which is not actually how betting works. If I put 50 on 1-12, I don’t lose 150 just because the odds are about 1/3, I lose 50.

Really!? How is she doing it!?

Don’t pick the wrong answers here even as a joke, because if you do you just have do do another roulette cycle.

I see… you’re right! It did seem like the ball floated for a split second there…
How humiliating…
Let’s catch her in the act so she can’t talk her way out of it! Have someone snipe the pocket when that glass lid appears! You’re in charge of choosing who’s gonna be the sniper!

Let’s make the new guy do the grunt work.

The only thing Shadow Sae will do in this phase is spin the roulette. In addition, any move that targets her, including debuffs, will trigger the penalty. There’s still no reason to debuff her in this phase, however. This will just be important later.

The stuff displayed on the monitor changed… That must mean the betting changes every time…

We will gain or lose 6000 or 9000 yen based on which bet we make here. We’ll go high return because we’re feeling lucky and also because I don’t actually think you can actually lose on the turn the lid gets sniped.

Heheh… Joker!

Nnh… Ngh…
You coward! What’re you so quiet for!? Say something!

Music: Will Power

S-Sis!?
Cheating!? Unfair!? Silence! This is MY world! If you want a fair fight, then to hell with the game! I’ll crush you by force. Fair and square, just as you like!
This… is my sister’s true nature!? No…
We’re finally back to a normal fight… Good luck, Joker!

Yep, we can really fight her now. Her HP will actually decrease.

Severing Slash is a single attack on one party member.

We’ll be using a few different Personas here. Seth knows One-shot Kill, a Severe Gun attack with a high Critical chance (not that crit is helpful in a boss fight), Masukukaja, and Marakukaja, so he’s our starter. We also switch to Pazuzu for Dekaja to nullify enemy buffs and Kushinada for Matarukaja. Makoto’s Marakukaja is helpful too.

As we see here, in this form Shadow Sae finally gets her full title, “Sae Leviathan Niijima.” Leviathan is a massive sea monster from Jewish belief, associated with the sin of envy.

Gatling Gun hits about five times on all party members. It’s also worth noting that she crit here; any turn she crits and you have buffs up, she’ll spend the extra turn using Dekaja. Better than another attack, at least.

Megidola is partywide Almighty.

Leviathan already hits pretty hard normally, so we want to Dekaja this buff away ASAP.

After a bit of damage, we get this dialogue.

Don’t you all think the same!? You’re controlling the hearts of others to achieve your own goals!
It’s not for us! We only do it to help others who are suffering!

Oh god, the roulette again!?

SP!?

I never lose, even in games of pure luck! Let me prove it!
So she’s not going to cheat anymore…? This may be a good opportunity for us, Joker. If we win at roulette, we’ll get an advantage in battle.

One thing to be aware of is that while the roulette is spinning, the penalty is still active. So no debuffing her and especially no attacking. You can heal and buff yourself all you like, though.

I’ve never actually lost a bet in this phase of the battle. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s impossible, especially if you pick the high-risk bet. For this reason, I do not recommend you pick that bet, especially when SP is on the line. Losing 100 SP is a problem. Losing 150 SP could be a nightmare.

Besides, there’s virtually no chance you need more than 100 SP to be topped off anyway.

Hundred Slaps is single-target Physical and inflicts Dizzy.

Justice can only be on the side of the victor!

Heat Riser is a massive problem that we definitely need to once more Dekaja away immediately.

Eventually, we’ll get her to critical HP…

As long as I can win… that’s all that matters…
Sis…

As you can see here, Desperation is a boss-exclusive move that permanently increases the user’s Attack in exchange for lowering their Defense. This isn’t a buff, so we can’t use Dekaja to remove it. I’d, uh, also advise that you guard on your next turn. No reason, just do it.

This is the damage this move does with Defense boosted and guarding. On my first take I throttled my damage at the end of the fight to see this move and I got one-shot. It’s hosed.

Don’t worry, Ryuji…

You’ll get your revenge.

I… I…

:toot:

Ann learns Maragidyne to replace Maragion.

This one’s gonna be controversial. So, despite Mediarama being probably my most-cast skill of Makoto’s, I elect to replace it with Diarahan, which fully heals one teammate. Why? Well, because we can buy Takemedic-All-Zs from Takemi, which are just a little better than Mediarama. We cannot buy items that fully heal a teammate. As long as we buy a ton of those Takemedics, we’ll be fine. I hope.

(In all honesty, I maybe should have gotten rid of Energy Shower instead)

Samarecarm isn’t a great skill, so I can see keeping Fortify Spirit on Akechi for now. I get rid of it anyway.

Music: Regret

Hmm… Getting some interference here. Hopefully nothing.

That’s only a Shadow. Why are you so…
Quiet!
...Sorry.
We’ll go grab the Treasure.

I don’t think it’s wrong to bring light to evils which can’t be judged by law. That’s all the Phantom Thieves have been trying to do too. But these aggressive investigations? Twisting the truth for your own personal gain…? Please… You have to think back to the feelings you had when you first wanted to be a prosecutor. Think about your justice, Sis.
My justice…
Try to remember how you used to be…
How I…
Niijima-san… She’s just like my father… What caused them to change like this…?
Hm… Even though their own desires were the cause, succumbing to such distorted thoughts is strange… Is there another reason they don’t know of…?

This deal we made… was a great experience for me.
*nods*
I feel like my bond with Akechi is growing deeper...

By no means. This shall be the end of our working together. That was part of our promise. You haven’t forgotten, have you?

(to Makoto) Are you all right…?
I am. Let’s go.

Enemy readings! When did they…!?

Music: Run, Run, Run!

They’re gathering outside!

This doesn’t look good…
We defeated the Palace ruler and even stole the Treasure, yet the Shadows are still restless… It doesn’t make any sense… What’s going on here?

Futaba hears a voice, its words scrambled and inaudible, coming from what sounds like a radio.

We need to go now! Those guys in black suits are almost here. We’ll be done for if we get surrounded!
A team this large would be discovered immediately. We had best split up for our escape… Although, we’ll need someone to act as a decoy… …No, that’s too dangerous.

Joker!? Are you planning on distracting them by yourself!?
Let him do it, Queen. He’s quiet, but once his mind’s made up, he’s not gonna take no for an answer.

Please don’t do anything reckless, OK?
I’ll never forgive you if you don’t make it back.
We still haven’t fulfilled our deal, remember?

This truly is a painfully reluctant parting…!
It seems we had best hurry.
...We’ll see you later.

Everyone nods. How are we gonna get out of this one? Find out next time!

It's a nice touch that Leviathan is a more extreme take on Thief Makoto's design.

I do kind of wish there was at least one palace where you were actually, y'know, phantom thieves. Instead you're more like brazen bandits, completely unsubtly beating people up for their stuff. Maybe it's phantom by default since no one in RL knows what you're doing.

Battler, the literal stupidest man on earth. Why are you even here, Battler, why did you come back to this place so you could fuck literally everything up?
I really like this dungeon, this Shadow in particular. It's a level of connection between the setup of the dungeon and the person who "constructed" it as it were that we don't always get- we got it with Kamoshida, we got it with Futaba, but you have to squint and suppose a lot for the others*. The Casino, and the place it represents, as well as the things you have to do to get by (namely, to cheat) reveal a truly cynical view about the law, about the way it is created, and who benefits. It suggests a system not fair or balanced, in service of the peace or prosperity of the citizenry, but a literal crapshoot, in which the already wealthy and powerful get even more wealth and power in exchange of the poor and powerless...and Sae's Shadow envisions herself at the top of that system. That doesn't suggest anything flattering about Sae, it's true, and it does line up with the things we've seen her do in the real world (namely, threatening Sojiro with a custody suit to get more info)... but here's the thing about Shadows: they lie. In Jungian psychology, they are thought to represent the subconscious, either the entirety of unconsciousness or the certain aspects of our personality that our conscious ego cannot, or will not, admit... and these aspects don't have to be correct to be imagined. Humans, emotional critters that we are, tend to color our entire understanding with knowledge, for good or bad, so again it all comes down to masks. If the consciousness is the "lie" we tell the world, then the Shadow is the "lie" we tell ourselves.

Why do I bring this up, all of a sudden? Because I think remembering it is essential to nailing down the true nature of Sae. Think about the things we had to do to get to the Treasure of the Palace this time around: namely jump through a lot of hoops that are probably reminiscent of Sae's own journey to becoming a prosecutor. (I'm thinking mostly of the Colosseum here, having to face fo after foe to increasing jeers and insults... how much of that is reminiscent of Sae's early court days, I wonder?) And then you have the Shadow's... increased awareness of the PTs actions throughout the dungeon; if she didn't exactly know where they were at any given point, she always surmised what they had done, where they were going and controlled how they proceeded. Contrast this to the previous dungeons, wherein the Thieves slipped in through holes in their security left by arrogance or stupidity, or because the Shadow didn't actually care to stop them (i.e Futaba). And hey- as has been brought up already, why didn't the Shadow immediately change the rules at the Bridge of Judgment? There isn't any authority here but hers, no judge overseeing her, nothing to stop her from declaring the toll at Infinity+1 coins... but she doesn't, and that's interesting. That suggests that there's a point in which Sae won't bend the law any more; that for here, there is a code of justice, a set of rules that everyone is bound by, or ought to be. And then there's this interesting bit we saw when traversing the Palace and had to visit the courtroom to continue, where Sae recognized Makoto in the audience:

Arist posted:

Hm…? I noticed a lot of students here, but is that Akechi-kun… and Makoto? Now that I think about it, there was a message about her coming… *sigh* That doesn’t matter for now.

Some people noted her reaction at the time, and used it as more proof of Sae's callousness towards Makoto, but remember the last scene we saw at Makoto's house: there is genuine love between them that is reciprocated. So I have a different reading of Sae's expression here: that's horror, friends. That's shame.

If Sae is so convinced of the reality he Palace presents, the philosophy of climbing to the top no matter what, why should she be ashamed when being seen in her element? Also interesting is that there is no Makoto analogue at the palace; you could see that as Makoto not being as important to Sae as her job, but recall that Futaba is close to Sojiro and there is no Sojiro analogue in Futaba's Palace. Futaba always loved and appreciated Sojiro, but was unable to show it until her demons were dealt with, the distance between them represented in Futaba's mind as a vast, uncrossable desert. We can live in the same house as somebody and not really interact with each other, or be able to help one another, after all; I suspect Cognitive Makoto is far, far away from this place for the same reason- because of a painful subject nobody can really speak of because they don't know how.

(There's more I can say, but this post runs long and it's time for victuals, for myself and the cat)

*Or it's thuddingly obvious. Why is Kaneshiro's Palace a bank that flies? "Because his name means money-palace, y'dope!" the game replies. Astonishing. :what:

It’s worth noting Sae’s Shadow is the Casino Manager, not the owner. Which implies she’s the most successful and powerful employee but ultimately part of the system the owner designed. Which could be part of why she does make a show of following the systems instead of just doing whatever she wants to win, you may bend the rules but you must not break them entirely and all that Jazz.

I imagine if we got a look at the cognitive version of Sae’s boss or perhaps the government itself we’d see the Casino Owner.
