Honestly of the mature women you can date I’d say Chihaya is the most acceptable, she’s meant to be really early 20s and has no professional relationship with you that could be considered compromised by a romantic relationship. Kawakami as noted is your teacher, Tae is your doctor and Ohya is using you as a journalistic source. I still think Ohya is the worst dating choice in the game, and personally as someone who is an adult I like Kawakami the most from a who would I date in real life standpoint.

So, I think that Ohya as a romance option sucks, but I thought that a big part of her confidant is revolving around what happened to her Partner (and I felt there were romantic tones IRT their history.). Just seems like that's not really A Thing That Should Be, age aside. I dislike the Kawakami thing because she tries really hard to avoid hurting her students (in the wrong ways, due to the lovely blackmail family), and I feel like she'd be a strong character for walking away from this, or at least not buying into it right away. I'm not mad about it, i just think it sucks and exists because That Guy in charge of the game is gross. I'm on the "don't date futaba" train due to everything that's been said. She just doesn't need that right now, leave her be. I don't see any problems with Chihaya, and Tae is weird but I like her overall. The rest are fine really. There's some real sweet moments in a lot of confidants and I enjoyed them for what they are.

Kawakami thing is a huge power imbalance on both ends: She's the protag's teacher, but also he possess a lot of compromising information that could loving ruin her career if it gets out. Because especially in Japan, being in an escort service even if she never actually prostituted herself would cause her to lose her job, the game doesn't touch on it - but it's basically there and probably plays a part in Kawakami relenting.

It probably helps that this is 100% optional content? Even if you’re going completionist, you don’t have to pursue any of these routes at all and they’re kind of insignificant in the grand scheme of things, in my opinion. Anyway, this game is already kind of a power fantasy for its target demographic of older teenage boys (game has a CERO C rating in Japan, which is meant for ages 15+), and I kind of see these options as an extension of that power fantasy. I’m not saying its good that you can engage in them in-game and they are wrong, but I could also understand the appeal for someone of that age.

The game is pretty fantastic and the fact is not everyone necessarily minds in the long scheme that it has some unfortunate romance options. Especially when those are not at all related to the gameplay itself or even the overall story. Furthermore at least as far as I remember it is always the protagonist initiating with the older romance options. As opposed to the others his age who often show interest and then let him respond to it. Also Maaku is over 16 from memory, which is the age of consent in quite a few countries. As I mentioned, he’s basically a mature capable young man in these scenes. It’s uncomfortable sometimes but I don’t necessarily mind much. Consent in Australia for example is a 16 year old can consent with a 17 and 18 year old. I do agree though that the adult confidant romances could end with a, we’ll wait a year but still be kind of dating thing instead of an outright dating thing. Would be less uncomfortable for international audiences. I’m more upset we can’t date Sae because Sae is great. Although really that’d probably end up with me having the same issue as Tae and Kawakami, which is that the position they hold in relation to the protagonist, Doctor and Teacher, make the romance a lot more uncomfortable even if I, personally, find them both attractive and interesting. That’s basically my point though, dating Tae and Kawakami is uncomfortable because one is your doctor and the other is your teacher. I similarly find dating Futaba creepy because she’s essentially relearning her emotions and how to live outside her room and you basically are acting as her therapist.

As the dude who is getting performatively bent out of shape about it, I don't think anyone's trying to justify it, it's just that this is, again, a game for horny teenagers that wants to let you indulge in a power fantasy. The game blatantly stumbles trying to write around it, but we have to consider who the actual audience is here.

Being able to date older women didn't effect my enjoyment of the game at all. What did was stuff like the combat system, visuals, story, music and the characters. There are some questionable choices I'm not going to deny that, but to say that the game is trash and to question the accolades that it got is just stupid.
