While we're discussing motherboards...I've been holding off on an upgrade for a while, basically waiting until the 3000 chips are finally released and make a decision at point for what to get. What I know for sure is I want to build a tiny mITX system, but man the selection of ITX AM4 boards is a little lacking, and I can't say I'm happy with any of them. It's mostly weird choices in IO that bother me. Only 6 USB ports, really?

I'm hoping some new ITX boards come out with the new CPUs, and hopefully without a goddamn fan for the chipset.

Shopping for a motherboard is so tedious.

Yeah, now try shopping for an mITX board :shepicide:

The various b450/x470 ITX boards are all a collection of various compromises, the rear IO is what annoys me the most. Listen, I've seen you assholes stick 10 or more USB ports on your ATX boards, what the hell is this 6 port garbage all about?

Some of the new x570 boards are better on that front, but with the chipset fan (barf) and likely increased cost I'm probably gonna end up with an Asus Rog strix B450-I. Waiting for B550 boards to come out is just gonna be too drat long.

If having "only" six USB ports on the rear is the least-worst compromise you can find, seems to me it's time to just bite the bullet and grab a USB hub.

Yeah it's really only an annoyance not a critical flaw. My current PC has lasted a long-rear end time and I expect my next one will as well, so I just want try to get everything perfect. I know, never gonna happen, just let me piss and moan on the internet, ok?

E: If you really need more USB ports running faster than a HUB, get a board with a 2x PCIe M.2 slots and use a M.2 to PCIe x4 riser to add a USB card. I think the ASRock X470 ITX board might also support bifurcation of the GPU x16 slot, which you could use to add USB ports via a riser.

AMD likely pushing NUC-likes soon™ http://www.fanlesstech.com/2019/10/exclusive-amds-nuc-is-coming-soon.html

Not using embedded processors either apparently so...socketed NUCs? That sounds more like AMD is selling a platform and form factor than they are selling a complete solution.

...wait, is this an offspring of Project Quantum?

Well, there's already the Asrock deskmini A300: https://www.asrock.com/nettop/AMD/DeskMini%20A300%20Series/ (which I really really want for honestly no good reason other than "it's neat")

Would be interesting to see more options of course.

There used to be mobo's with support for multiple consumer sockets and stuff too to act as 'transistional upgrade' boards. They were usually poo poo and made by guys like PCChips but the idea itself is cool as heck. Here is one that supports socket 370 and slot 1: PC Chips M741LMRT

I have vague memories of some grody thing that was socket 754, but with a monstrous daughterboard you could put 939 cpu in. Possibly had to move your memory to the daughtercard as well.

Oh poo poo, and in trying to find that board I found this beauty from, guess who, Asrock: https://www.asrock.com/mb/ULi/K8 Combo-Z/

DOUBLE oh poo poo, I found something even more hosed up (and maybe what I was originally thinking of) ECS made an LGA775 board that had a daughterboard you could put a 939 CPU in :psyboom:
