I think it's stated somewhere early on that it's pretty much a PR move.

No I get that, but Kamoshida immediately undermines that effort by spreading the rumors about you and works to get you expelled covertly even before you stand up to him.

And given what a spineless toady the principal is, I'm a little amazed he didn't just have the power to nix the offer.

I missed it but why was the Shujin principal part of Shido's goon squad? What possible value does he have to him?

It's made very apparent at some point that Shido has a myriad of goons in a ton of different places no matter how insignificant the position. High-school principal was what this dude got stuck with because Shido saw him as insanely expendable person even moreso than others. It is really funny the level Shido goes to try and cut off ties. Like if he had a cat that he could stroke during cutscenes ala Dr. Claw he would probably kill that cat too.

Kamoshida's not part of the conspiracy and even then they aren't desperate to have Joker be their star attraction. It just happened to be a thing that could boost the school's reputation if it goes well and if not then whatever a criminal turned out to be a criminal, whoopty doo.

That is because Kamoshida is an arrogant rear end in a top hat who has to have everything resolve around him.

Honestly if you want an example of bad writing the SIU Director existing only for the sake of cackling about the Conspiracy and Madarame and Kaneshiro having stakes in the conspiracy too despite it being such a loving nothing aspect to both of them is one of them.

I honestly thought the same, and I went in mostly blind. Considering Makoto and Haru both attend, it's gotta be one of the better off schools.

If you eavesdrop on the students, I believe the first years on the third floor, they explicitly state that Shujin is a relatively prestigious college prep academy. This is where Sae came out from, after all, and why she is putting Makoto through it. Ryuji is likely there because his single mother is paying for him to have a better chance/future, likewise with Ann and her rich fashion designer parents, despite neither being high-achievers academically. Heck, Ryuji in middle school was a track star, and was probably recruited based on that as before his first-year the track team was more front and center than the volleyball team.

That honestly isn't that unrealistic. It was night, Shido specifically got his name pulled from the proceedings and then Joker had a several month gap where his life was completely upended at least twice before he encountered the guy in a completely different setting.

It would have worked better if he never realized it and they pieced it together in March after his release tbh.

Yep, Shujin is specifically said to be a good college prep school, I mean just look at those snazzy winter uniforms. They even allow Makoto to take university courses based off that scene where she and Goro run into each other in June

His release had nothing to do with Shido ultimately though. It came down to tracking down the woman involved and having her change her testimony.

I didn't mind Kaneshiro having connections to Shido. It made sense to me that a criminal would want connections to politics, and the opposite could be handy.

Madarame's connection was completely pointless though.

I want a Sae spinoff where we see just how soul crushing it is to be a defense attorney in a country with a 99% conviction rate.

Also so I can see Sae's sick matching motorcycle persona.

That's more of an after effect of how Japanese law enforcement won't take on cases they're not 99% sure about a conviction on. It's part of why Sae's casino is heavily rigged in the house's favor.

It's more that there's no point to it and Shido already has a billion other connections to other dudes of wealth funding his campaign and Kaneshiro only ever has a point of connection for the sake of acknowledging Black Mask's existence more. He is not a character so much as he is a construct of contrivance for the third storyline and the connection to the conspiracy to try and make that less so comes off as a really poor way of doing so.

The amount of dickishness on display in this game is so egregious and over the top that if it came out in 2015 or early 2016 it would be laughable.

But it came out in 2017, so it just felt like the worst slice of life.

I spent the whole game scratching my head.
"That isn't what Igor sounds like is it? I don't remember, Persona 4 came out almost a decade ago."
"You know, his assistants this time around are kinda mean, maybe it's just part of the prison motif."
"Wait, execute me? Dafuq, this is very out of character."
Reveal.
"Well poo poo."

Of course I also spent half the game thinking Philemon was going to show up.
"Look, Larvesta or whatever your name is. You don't get to be a butterfly in Persona. There is only one butterfly in Persona and you are not it."
