1999 house of the future is a fun short riff, and the joy Bridgette brings when she sings 1999 is wonderful. Their first two shorts together was Consuming Women and a thing on sleeping pills right? Lumbermouth posted:Any of the Teen Agers series of 1940s teen comedies and any Hallmark/Lifetime-style TV movie. It's such a rich untapped vein of bad movies to make fun of. Oh poo poo I just read a book that used the Teen Agers movies as an example of media that vanishes from the collective consciousness and they sounded absolutely ridiculous. I’m psyched! Thanks to all for the recommendations.

The Teen Agers movies are basically Saved by the Bell for the 40s. They always remind me of this time when I was a kid watching Grease 2 on TV. My sister's husband walked in and said, "Don't worry, high school's nothing like this." I've always been grateful for that. Edit: by the way, which book?

A goofy thing about the Teen Agers movies is their extremely loose continuity. Also their extremely lazy writing, within like three movies they reuse the same plot twice of Freddie getting mistaken for a lookalike.

The Mother of the Bride / Children of the Bride / Baby of the Bride trilogy is incredible Bridget and Mary Jo fodder. It stars Rue McClanahan and whole slew of TV actors as her variously hosed up children. My favorite parts are 1) Paul Dooley's cameo as her lousy drunken gambling addict ex and 2) her son abducting his kids from their mother / his ex being presented in a sympathetic light.

Also Rue's character - who is presented at least in her 50's or more - has a VERY premature baby because it's funny she went into labor the same time as her daughter but the kid's fine, it's not that kind of movie.

The Sherlock stuff probably isn't peak Mary Jo & Bridget but I still like watching them.

So if you try to watch them in original release order there will be riffs referencing stuff that hasn't happened yet.

I find those "of the Bride" movies tough to watch, not because they're incredibly awful or the riffing isn't good but all the dialogue is unbearably loving smarmy

A fun short is Oh, Boy! Babies! where Mary Jo falls in love with the nebbish 70s teacher.

I like their various holiday short collections, they have a Halloween one, a couple Christmas ones and a Spring one. I wish they had kept doing these. One of the Christmas collections has them riffing on some early 20th century home film. Rescue Me as mentioned earlier is great, as is High School USA. A dumb tv movie with tons of 80s and 60s TV stars.

That's a problem for me, I don't enjoy Rifftrax in actually worthwhile films.

you know a movie is bad when it's hard to watch even with Rifftrax. Looking at you, Star Wars Sequel Trilogy.

I was at a Q&A session with Bill Corbett last weekend, and someone asked him about movies that are too bad/poorly produced to be enjoyable even with riffs. He called out Rollergator by name, and said these days they're being more careful about getting movies that are at least semi-watchable. He also mentioned that they try to avoid movies that were poorly made by design. He said Birdemic 2 fit into this category, which is why they skipped it. Oddly, Birdemic 3 seems to be earnestly (if erroneously) made as something people might want to actually watch on its own merits. Yeah, I've seen a lot of folks like in the Twitch channel chat and in comments going "Do Birdemic 2" but you watch it and realize 'oh no, James thinks he's in on the joke.' So it's really bad in new ways, but not particularly funny ones.

I'm fond of Replica, it makes it plain to see that James must be a very nice man who has absolutely no understanding at all about the art of or craft of cinema.

Honestly from what I've seen people talk about their experiences with James 'nice' is very shaky. Here's one example. It's not the first time I've heard Nguyen didn't want to pay people. Wiseau might have been an rear end on set but at least his checks cleared. (I think.)

Moving right along... MST3K 1311- The Mask (1961) came up on the stream and bored me enough that I looked up horror movies of the period and settled on rewatching Eyes Without A Face (1960) instead. Just had to remind myself that a movie being old is no excuse for being crap.

All the Sharknado films are tongue-in-cheek to a certain degree simply because they involve tornadoes full of sharks, but the first was still more or less played straight (well, as straight as a movie about a LA getting flooded and terrorized by tornadoes full of sharks could be). The first sequel was way more nudge nudge wink wink about it.
