A lot of filmmakers outside Europe and the US would shoot 1.37:1 unless they used an anamorphic/large format process since they didn't warm up to matted widescreen (1.85:1).

I think a lot of the effect is lost on home video, though. It was intended to be shown on a huge screen in 70mm with 6-track surround sound.
