This is not accurate. AoS fans always say this but it is a deception. Don't be fooled like I was into watching hot garbage. :(

It's B-tier poo poo in an age where there are more good TV series than movies. I mean you can watch and enjoy it if you love Marvel superhero poo poo, I don't judge, but to call it "extremely good" is an overstatement.

My picky-as-hell friend (I had to prod him into trying "Deadwood" and "The Wire" for crying out loud) who has never read anything by Gaiman is super into it after the first episode. He was texting me throughout the premiere and I asked him as a non-book reader how he liked it. He said "I've got no real clue on what's going on narrative wise, but what they've put on the screen is endlessly engaging." First episode might grab you by the nuts, or your hesitancy might sour the experience. I'd say go in with an open mind and if you don't like it, you're only out an hour.

The last new show I watched before this was Legion, and I am jazzed as hell that 'bizarre nonlinear intentionally vague loving fantastically weird-looking TV that cares more about creating a vibe than being primarily focused on plot' is perhaps becoming a thing. Pan's Labyrinth and The Fall and Hero are up there with my favorite movies ever, but making a TV show along those lines probably wouldn't have flown even 5 or 6 years ago.

(And based on interviews with Noah Hawley, apparently a lot of poo poo in Legion was partly inspired by him watching the last season of Hannibal and thinking 'well gently caress, that looks fun')

Good premiere. I haven't read the book for like 15 years so I remember some bits but not others and it's nice to encounter things like it's the first time. Loved the arm with the sword breaking the frame. Love what the actor et al are doing with Shadow, because honestly I remember Shadow being really kind of flat. This Shadow has personality and charisma. I think this has the potential to keep being good, but I'm worried about pacing issues.

Also, I know it's Starz, but I think it took some balls to put the Bilquis "sex" scene in the premiere. That's going to be too weird for some folk and they might stop there, but gently caress those people.

Please also check out Legion for your crazy visuals needs.

It's interesting that both these shows are playing with the aspect ratio. I'm having a hard time remembering other shows doing this. Have there been many before this? Did Hannibal (can't remember)?

Aardark posted:

That's rough. On the other hand, if you watch known garbage show Agents of Shield and read a thread about it, you kind of deserve what you get. It's the same deal with The Walking Dead for me.

Ffffffffffffffffffff. Now you've done it. I've already seen other threads recently get derailed by a "HOW GOOD IS AGENTS OF SHIELD REALLY" conversation, let's not make this another.

Edit: gently caress it's too late just in-between when I started this post and finished. God. drat. It.

If only because Legion annoyed me and I find magic realism intractable, I feel compelled to point out that American Gods has a bucket-load of plot. This is not all tone poetry and internal consistency mattered in the book. That's. It to say it's Sanderson levels of magic rules, but "having a plot" shouldn't be a strike against it.

Look, Longbaugh, I know it's hard to see it up there in that ivory tower of yours but we need to remember that in the midst of this fascinating, impressionistic riff on a beloved shaggy-dog novel, nobody is asking the hard questions about Agents of SHIELD.

Look man, you don't know how hard it is to be up in this god drat tower. First of all, I get horrible cell reception and the wi-fi router is down at ground level for some reason. Also, do you know how hard it is to get Jimmy Johns to deliver up here?

I read this book last year in anticipation of the show and did not think it was very good. Great idea, pretty poor execution (except for those chapters that gave some gods' backgrounds, loved those). Anyway I'm finding this show to already be way better. There were so many parts in the book that I just couldn't tell what Gaiman was going for because his descriptions were so lacking. It's awesome to see "unfilmable" parts adapted so well. I'm looking forward to the rest. :five:

Does anybody know know what the outro music was? Prettying surely it's a cover song of something familiar but I can't remember which. It's driving me mad.

First guess was Dirty old Town from the Pogues but it's not.

It's really hard to overstate just how bad the first half of season one is though, hoo boy does it spin its wheels.

To get back on topic, I loved everything about the portrayal of Digital Boy, right down to his stupid, lovely, perfectly suited haircut.

I am not sure what to make of the show as the first episode was a bit spastic but each scene was fairly interesting. With the promise of Crispin Glover later on I am interested in seeing what he does. Also surprise Pornstache as a ginger leprechaun was great. My gf liked Shadow Moon as she watches The 100 so that's her hook to keep watching - she says he got much more built here. Anyways, hopefully the next episode follows a little more of a straight forward story but I understand they have to introduce this really hosed up world.

Maybe I'm just being dense, but here goes: In addition to the racial aspect of the tree/noose imagery, doesn't it serve a dual purpose as another allusion to Odin? He did hang himself from Yggdrasil to gain knowledge if I remember my Norse mythology correctly.
