Mixing stories of the week with a longer arc is kinda ideal so long as you don't wear out your welcome. Too much procedural and you're stuck in a status-quo of things never changing, too much of your arc and well, look at any streaming show.

I didn't like FRINGE, particularly Anna Torv, in most of the first season. But I agree that towards the end of season one (and I want to say right at the end) the show finds a different gear and got a lot more enjoyable.
