machine learning is when a computer uses algorithms to generate data for itself, and then iterates on the generated data to create new data or even new processing algorithms without the new methods of data processing being explicitly programmed by a human, although machine learning may be designed to request human supervision at an arbitrary iteration point

to emphasize, it's the latest idea for spending less money on meat puppets so you can pocket the cash, anyone who imagines that it has some lofty goal of creating a god machine has their head up their rear end

let's be optimistic here, strong ai is very unlikely, but there's still hope even a relatively dumb machine learning algorithm will end up killing us all in some way

You know in that episode of TNG where data learns a lesson about humanity, and how maybe he's more human than he realizes? Its like that op

its tools that statisticians have known about for literally thousands of years but given new shiny words and abused by bad computer touchers who dont understand them all of this is so you dont have to pay a guy to sit there and tell you if something is a picture of a cat or a dog; instead you can make large savings by having a computer tell you if something is a picture of a cat or a dog
