Successful peaceful protest is always backed by the threat of violence. It's not so much "Do this please, it's the correct and good thing", than "Do this correct and good thing with us peacefully, here, now, or do it with them painfully and bloodily later". That's not a violent rebellion wank-fantasy, that's just how it is.

Darth Walrus posted:The other three candidates in the leadership contest supported austerity policies and welfare cuts that almost drove my brother to suicide. This isn't about ideological purity, this is about basic survival. This. No one offered anything that would help not only me, but also my familty and friends and basically forced a good few people I know onto both the street or abroad, myself included. You wonder why I give no fucks about the death of New Labour and that I support Corbyns's policies? It's because New Labour's policies have all lead to the current political environments as they stand today, and they still offered "Well we're not quite as bad" as their only solution. Like the current Democratic party in the US, I and alot of other people dance on their grave.

MonsieurChoc posted:You know, the whole "Corbynista" thing is directly the PLP's fault, when you think about it. They didn't realize that people wanted genuine change from failing liberal sameness, and then when people flocked to the first genuine leftist choice they fought it tooth and nail instead of trying to deal with it. Of course the people who back Corbyn are super defensive about it! If Corbyn is ousted, the PLP have made sure everyone knows it's going to be back to politics as usual as soon as they can arrange it. The PLP has created this situation in what can only be described as an incredible act of Political Seppuku. Pretty much, alas.

Another Person posted:Burnham was one of the two leadership candidates pledging the renationalisation of the rail. It was a bit of an opportunist move on his part I will admit, because it was after people realised how popular the policy was with party members. I doubt he would keep McDonnell on as chancellor if he took leadership over though. McDonnell, while popular with the members, does not have a lot of love from other MPs and party officials. Who knows though, Burnham has proven to be malleable and willing to listen to what people actually want so it could happen if this theoretical situation went forwards. Unfortunately his presentation at the time was of the perfectly preened plastic politician. Watching several hustings with him, he just talked very artificially and never really seemed genuine and it's just the type of poo poo that really doesn't fly well at the moment.

Good. There really is no-one else right now who looks like they'd be good for the job. ukle posted:If Clive Lewis wins his seat (as is probably likely given the results of the locals in his area all stayed comfortably Labour) I kind of expect the PLP to get behind him as a challenger if Corbyn wont go. They wont risk another Blandy McBland, and will go with someone they know will win against Corbyn with the membership. If they (the PLP) do, and he goes along with it, that's him probably crossed off the list of favourables. That's really just how badly the PLP have screwed the pooch since Corbyn's election. They'll taint anything they manage to get their hands on. Kokoro Wish fucked around with this message at 08:34 on May 9, 2017 |

jabby posted:If Clive Lewis stands with the backing of 'moderate' MPs I'd vote against him. Primarily because I think he'd simply be used as a lever to get Corbyn out and then promptly be forced out himself by the same MPs. Anyone who thinks they would be happy with a 'unity candidate' rather than full control of the party back is deluding themselves. Getting rid of 'one member, one vote' is top of their to-do list. Yup, this.

If we're seeing anything from both the PLP's behaviour, Blair and the Democratic establishment in America, there is no unity with Neo-Liberal/ Labour right. There is only capitulation to them. They also don't extend the unity rhetoric in the other direction, as can be seen with the PLP and Blair coming out and sabotaging/speaking against unity, or in the US with the Democratic Unity Tour being a complete farce on the establishment side of it. It's a one sided, awful deal and no, Jeremy should neither take it or stand down, at the very least until the system for leadership voting is changed for good.

Been a few days, but just watched the ITV's piece on Corbyn and the Labour party as it stands. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYTCdhQu2cs Bit of a hit piece, but there we go. Mount St. Helens in Washington erupts, causing a massive avalanche and killing 57 people on this day in 1980. Ash from the volcanic eruption fell as far away as Minnesota. Seismic activity at Mount St. Helens, which is 96 miles south of Seattle, began on March 16. A 4.2-magnitude tremor was recorded four days later and then, on March 23-24, there were 174 different recorded tremors. The first eruption occurred on March 27, when a 250-foot wide vent opened up on top of the mountain. Ash was blasted 10,000 feet in the air, some of which came down nearly 300 miles away in Spokane. The ash caused static electricity and lightning bolts. Kokoro Wish fucked around with this message at 01:07 on May 19, 2017 |

Irony Be My Shield posted:If Corbyn does lose I just hope his successor can arrive as a peacemaker rather than fighting for either side of the war within the Labour Party. Corbyn has certainly driven some voters away but he's also attracted new ones and provided a set of overwhelmingly popular and good policies. A leader with less baggage and a better public image could really capitalise on at least some of those policies and hopefully bring people back while also retaining the new voters. Again, the "Unity" rhetoric only swings in one direction, and is actually "Shut up and capitulate to our Neo-Liberalism". The centerists will never unify behind a left wing candidate, but will demand unity and no descent under their agenda at all times. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHDmskeGARk Kokoro Wish fucked around with this message at 00:18 on May 21, 2017 |
