Minor bit of news, the UFC offered Nate Diaz a fight against Ferguson in July, Nate said sure but had some demands which he didn't get into (probably money), the UFC then stopped talking to him and Diaz changed his mind and decided he doesn't want to fight Ferguson because Ferguson has the same manager as Conor, which matters because.... ??? Now he's saying he and Nick are taking 2017 off to train and compete in bike races. Basically saying they'll listen to fight offers, but they don't need to fight if its not worth it. edit: said the main reason he fought Conor the last two times was to make money to pay for racing, which he says is an expensive sport if you are serious. He's got a racing schedule planned out for the 2017 racing season. edit2: yep, it was money. He told the UFC that July is the middle of racing season, and if they want to pull him out of the season it'll cost them. Rigel fucked around with this message at 21:35 on May 3, 2017 |

manyak posted:Dana is right that Nate vs Eddie Alvarez or whatever would do lovely numbers headlining a PPV, just because he was a good foil for Conor doesnt mean hes a giant draw, i dont know why people get so worked up about that. He already said he just wants to ride bike anyway Very few people get a pop like the Diaz brothers. I don't think they are at Conor/Ronda/GSP level, but I believe they would do pretty well headlining even if a belt isn't on the line.

ESPN is reporting that when Nate Diaz turned down the interim 155 fight against Ferguson, he countered with a 165 pound catchweight for no title. Nate has no interest at all in an interim title, and didn't want to cut to 155 for a fight he wasn't that interested in. The UFC didn't bother to respond to his counter.

Just noticed that the feature prelim and the entire PPV, all 12 fighters, are ranked top 10 in their division. I don't think that has ever happened since rankings became a thing.

So, this happened. Neil Degrasse Tyson was on the UFC unfiltered podcast. One little-known fact is that Dr. Tyson was an undefeated state champ as a high school wrestler, and then wrestled for Harvard while studying astrophysics. So naturally Neil wanted to show off one of his favorite pinning moves on Matt Serra, and then Matt Serra demonstrated a Kimura. This clip also has a pretty good story about when someone pulled a knife on Tyson in high school. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roPfI_LSd6M

threeagainstfour posted:Destroying Arlovski, Werdum, Overeem, and JDS all in a row, all in one round, only to fall short of breaking the record for defenses by getting killed in a rematch with Stefan Struve would be the most heavyweight thing so let's book that rematch immediately. Mighty Mouse isn't thrilled about it. On twitter, he basically said he wants TJ to prove that he can actually cut to 125 and win at 125. He wants TJ to beat someone else at 125 then fight for the title. This is probably a negotiating ploy. DJ is basically saying that if the UFC wants him to take a really hard fight for his record-breaking attempt, then they will have to pay him for it. And I'm fine with it, DJ is drastically underpaid, he might have a little leverage here, so write the big check and then they can promote the hell out of this.

tesilential posted:MM is literally the best, but how much exactly does he deserve? Salaries in MMA are and must be based on drawing power, and Demetrious isn't yet a draw. Since DJ isn't interested in becoming an interesting person and thus a draw, beating TJ for the new title defense record is probably the best thing he could do for his earning power. In the current model you are right. I think a lot of us are hoping the fighters form an effective union, and the UFC shifts to more like a league than a fight promotion. Then salaries will be based more on merit and less on draw.

GSP revealed why he needs so much time to fight. He has a minor eye injury that is healing, and the doctors told him that he shouldn't even spar until September. He also said the UFC knew about it when he signed, and he thought they shouldn't do the press conference with Bisping yet because the timeline for the fight would be so long, but the UFC insisted on it anyway, then tried to pressure him to fight in July. After the UFC pulled the fight, GSP decided to go public with what was happening. https://twitter.com/MMAFighting/status/868199419400925184

CommonShore posted:Courtney Casey tested positive for elevated testosterone in competition. USADA is also going to ignore it because apparently Texas uses a lovely unsophisticated test and doesn't want to pay for a better one. She was only suspended by Texas for 3 months. She was reportedly a little high for testosterone (not crazy high, but high), and USADA usually does a second test to see if the testosterone was normally produced and compares to the biological passport. I imagine USADA will probably surprise her with some random tests though.

I am reasonably confident that Mayweather would beat Conor in a boxing match, but beyond that, I'm not confident at all with predicting a loss in a MMA bout by Conor, unless he tries to jump to LHW or something similarly stupid.
