More importantly how terrible do you have to be to not get a match with any program? And yes I know the stigma of Caribbean grads is those who got rejected in the states

Guest2553 posted:I guess I could have provided context - Canada is in a speculative real estate bubble fueled by easy credit and chickenshit politicians who can't threaten their voter base's ~house values~. Toronto specifically is up something stupid like 30% y/y, so the 'buy now or never' mantra means people are getting into bidding wars over rat traps with no conditions. It's to the point where real estate is the largest contributor to GDP before even counting in related industries like construction and finance. A lot of discretionary spending comes from paper gain HELOCs. I wasn't aware the Canadian bubble was this bad. Very interesting stuff. I still don't get what changed so suddenly between buying the house and whenever the dude decided he wanted out.

Tiny Brontosaurus posted:It definitely happens. I knew a girl who counter-offered with a ten percent bump, was asked to step outside so they could confer, and when they brought her back in they rescinded her offer. If you are young, a minority, or female you're supposed to take whatever they give you and be grateful for it. It's more important to some companies to hold the line on never giving in to "greedy" applicants than to not miss out on a first choice hire. Why did you decide to inject race and gender into the discussion?

Being head honcho is great while everything is going right but not so much when things go wrong. I don't think many of the self proclaimed future CEO college kids consider the latter possibility.

An acquaintance of mine is in this situation despite having a decent job because he can't afford to move out to a "safe neighborhood." Plot twist: had lunch with him recently and found out he makes way more then I thought (think ~100k vs ~50k). He just stuffs massive amounts of money into index funds / retirement accounts and lives like a pauper. BWM? I feel bad for the parents in either case but I remember them being helicoptery so maybe they prefer it that way.

Humble brag posts are old and boring And before someone jumps down my throat about the salary/mortgage ratio, if his dad is sitting on 250k liquid he can probably do whatever he wants and be fine. If anything it's more of a dad wants the property for investment reasons but will let junior pretend to buy it and be his own man. Virtue fucked around with this message at 22:46 on Jun 26, 2017 |

One of his coworkers observed that he was working a full time job in order to get to his full time job, and the guy shrugged. Finding an apartment in one day in NYC? Now I know this story is made up.
