A coworker was bragging to me about how he'd just been in the Caribbean, how beautiful it was down there, etc. Then he mentioned that he was there to visit his daughter in vet school...

I'd heard that there were reject med schools down there, but vet schools?

There is too much here.

OP's excuses for not getting a job.

His mother is a shut-in.

His sisters living with their grandfather in a 5000 sq ft house.

"All in all I am self-sufficient" from the guy who lives with his parents and has no job.

OP's father ruins the entire family's livelihood by looking at child porn. OP says in a reply "You can always rely on family. I'm sorry but you can." And also "he's a great man and best father I could ever have gotten."

"All of this is not really my problem. I could move out today and take care of myself just fine." He ponders getting a job at Lowe's or Home Depot despite having two college degrees.

My city adopted pedestrian-oriented planning codes a while ago. A team of "business consultants" brought in by the commissioners just hosed it all up by advocating bigger parking lots as a solution to our declining shopping mall corridor.

The shopping mall was declining along with every other mall in the country. And the surrounding businesses were suffering because they're built along a highway, and doing anything there is a huge pain in the rear end.

Man wants to take out a second mortgage or cash out his stocks to buy an empty lot across the street and keep it empty to make sure nobody moves in.

It's a nice sentiment dude, but maybe just let your son and his friends play in your backyard?

My family sort of did this when I was a kid. There were still a few empty lots in our neighborhood, and my parents bought the one directly next to ours. We put in a sandbox, tree house, storage shed, zip-line, and tire swing. And we got to keep it wooded.

It was really pretty cool. Lots were cheap there though, so it wasn't a huge investment.

Yes, this is part of their standard "hit the pavement" strategy that also includes offering to do work for free until they see your value, asking about jobs when they aren't even hiring, and following up in-person after an interview.

Asking about potential openings when a company isn't actively hiring (to your knowledge) is actually smart.

I actually did this when I was fresh out of college nearly a decade ago, and the best I ever got was "We really appreciate that you took the time to come in and talk with us, but we just post them online. You should check there." Places with openings still referred me to the website.

I'm sure it works sometimes (especially in the context of networking) but that's not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about "If you need a job, you just need to walk in and show them you're serious," which is just not how it works anymore in 99% of cases.

Like if I had a kid I'd have to get a bigger place and start car commuting. I just can't afford a big enough place for a kid within walking distance of my job.

I’m guessing much of the “traditional” large home style is modeled after needs that have changed in the past 25 years or so. When I was young, my family’s dining room was used every night for dinner and for every birthday party/gatherings. Now that my brothers/sister are all adults, we still use my parent’s dining room several times a week. But we grew up in a large family (6 kids) with non-divorced parents. My dad was home every night and my mom didn’t work.

Now, younger families in which both parents work and everyone having their own entertainment, I’m guessing nobody uses dining rooms anymore, nor do they need to gather the entire family around the one TV, or share time on the one computer. Nor does anyone spend time outside or watching their children play.

Perhaps builders will move to eliminate porches, large yards and the dining room eventually. Or people “need” these since they grew up that way and “all houses should have these things”.

I'm only ok with removing porches if we replace them with those low-slope roofs that you can get to through a window and sit on.

OK, the next thing that bothers me is that you could buy two lawnmowers for the price of one month of their lawncare.

There's a population of feral horses on Cumberland Island (GA) that's loving miserable and infected with all sorts of parasites and diseases, and apparently they even suffer from over-consumption of sand. Wildlife managers want to cull the herd, but the public is horrified by the idea, so they just continue to live their lovely short lives on the island so that people can take instagram photos of them.

I'm probably going to spend a couple of hours making tacos tonight, but that's a hobby meal. People like this guy need to know that cooking can be as simple as throwing a frozen fish in a pan and putting some rice and frozen vegetables in a steamer.

Cooking purists are wrong too though, because modern households (fewer stay-at-home spouses to cook every night) and the economy (specialization means you do what you're good at and then pay someone else to make your food) make eating out and frozen meals basically a necessity. Most people can't reasonably cook every night. But if you never do, then you spend money like this guy and get fat.

e: I consider making a sandwich cooking
