I was in Egypt and Dahab last October. It is a little sketchy - there's blockades and security checkpoints along all the roads. BUT the benefit is that there's very few tourists. Very very few. And everything is cheap - stayed at a beautiful 4-5* resort on the beach for like $20 a night. I would also recommend climbing Mt Sinai if you're the adventurer type.
