I actually agree with that take. the whole mall Santa poo poo is a weird leftover from an earlier time when we treated kids like they didn’t have agency or bodily autonomy and it was considered acceptable for strangers to discipline them by striking them across the face. It’s really incompatible with how we think of children now, and with how we try to raise them.
