That's Don Hackett (and Jonah Guttenberg, the head of CREO whenever he shows up). Benjamin Burke is a security officer (I think?) that contacts... someone, his team I guess, over course of the second area. Eventually he leaves for the Biolabs and then you never hear from him again as far as I'm aware.

Thanks for that link. I was wondering why early on in the game my injectables would (seemingly at random) refill as I killed mobs. Meeting Don was a real bummer

It sounds as though he should be someone you can meet at the terminal to Biolabs if you beat Firebug fast enough. He eventually goes from MEET ME AT TRAM to I UH, CAN'T WAIT MUCH LONGER to I'M SORRY. I'M LEAVING if you take too long. I say that, and I first got the I'M LEAVING message as I was still clearing the staircase/initial hazard area. But then I got the message again as I encountered Firebug? So maybe he's just set to leave no matter what? Who knows.

Playing The surge actually helped me to understood some of the design decisions taken by the Dark souls series. The reason why so many of the enemies are giants in dark souls is due to the position of the 3rd camera. When fighting same sized enemies, your own character can obstruct the enemy's attack "tells", which makes it hard for player to react. i.e, the reason Little Mac is so small compared to all the other boxers in Punch Out. The giant characters makes it easier to see where the attack is coming from so player can react. And the second thing is that Souls-like game works better in open ground instead of claustrophobic corridors. For years I've been spoiled by games with min-maps, that I easily lost all sense of direction when I go into non-descript basement tunnels, the reason why I gave up on Lords of Fallen in the later half of the game.

Something about this game's irking me in a way that Dark Souls doesn't. It feels like enemies either stagger less or have significantly less of a tell between hit stun and legitimate stagger. Maybe it's that, or maybe there's some hard-coded chance per swing that they'll instantly recover to perform a counter attack? It's most apparent with the early Rhino-equipped twin rigged guys, where I can dodge their lunge, perform a 3 hit combo, and there's a seemingly random chance on the third hit that they'll pull some kinda light speed one-two punch that takes 1/3rd of my life with no real counter beyond "don't swing more than twice". Hammer guys have a much slower short range upward swing type of deal, but it's still hard to see the startup on it if you're already mid swing or if the camera is slightly out of position.

In my experience, hitting unarmored parts will easily stagger, armored parts not so much. Some weapons I believe can hit multiple parts. Maybe they don't stagger because you are not banging on the fleshy part?

I went back to R&D after getting to the next zone because I remembered a Power coupling I needed to jump to that I had missed on the first time through. I walked out again with 10 more core levels, a completely new kickass armor set, 2 new weapons and some hella cool sunglasses. EDIT PROTIP gear related spoiler: When you finish the biolabs and get the drone door unlock you can open up a door in the underground next to the PAX boss area and the twin blade guy drops T3 helmet mats and the hammer guy drops T4 helmet mats. This is a relatively painless way to farm up helmet mats for your preferred gearsets really early. Sandweed fucked around with this message at 11:25 on May 22, 2017 |

Speaking of core levels, I'm doing a no-leveling run and it's actually really interesting how well the game supports playing this way. - Regaining health injections when you reach the next level's worth of scrap is really useful when playing this way. Low requirement to level = much more frequent health injection refills. Could also be a benefit to not power-leveling yourself if you're just playing the game normally! - Taking on the tripods in the second area and cutting off their top leg gives Ancillary Power implants, which increase your max core power to beyond the normal 10. - Because you don't need body parts (since you can't wear very much armor), you can focus on the blue zones and output way more damage. - Since you only have 4 implant slots available, ever, the "see health bars" implant taking up a slot actually becomes a pretty interesting gameplay wrinkle. The only issue I've run into so far is that some attacks are so strong they just kill you in one hit at base health, but I might be able to mitigate that later with a sentinel-class chest piece and health boost implants. edit: For anyone who wants to try this, here's my current setup: The Ancillary Power implant (second from left) gives a bonus +6 core power, which gives you exactly enough to wear a full Lynx or Rhino set. If you're feeling ballsy you can unequip the Medical Audit chip and exchange being able to see enemy health with another Ancillary Power, for heavier armor/implants. I have MK5 gorgon now and I upgraded the staff from R&D to MK5 as well, it feels so good to take out a an arc welder bot in 2 hits. I can finish of security guys in one combo if I go for unarmored parts, and keep my health up with the energy to health implant. Right now I just do runs through security for a cool 100k scrap every cycle. Remember to block people, a lot of enemies open themselves up for attacks this way. Rhino Claw guys went from terrifying killers to chumps once I started to block their initial attack. I also live and die by the melee stun bot module, it's so fun to troll enemies with it, and then harvest their limbs for parts.

Sandweed posted:Concussive Module Thanks, I'll have to do some more testing tonight. It was pretty fun to just go back and stomp the entire first level. With the new rig, I can run all my good energy mods at once and pretty much never be out of energy. Triggering that, running up on a dude, slide hitting him and then the drone flies him all the way across the room was beyond satisfying. The magnet module is great for interrupting dudes with gas grenades and flamethrowers and getting them into melee range. I hate those guys. Just got to and beat the second boss. I really like the design of both bosses so far, it feels very Bloodborne-inspired in how you're encouraged/required to go for specific bits of their bodies before you can actually harm them. The actual level of polish in the fights is rather low (with the second boss it too me two attempts before I realized how to break its limbs because the outer portions of the legs no longer have hitboxes when they're partially damaged) but I like that the fights themselves play out like a puzzle. I imagine it's less fun on repeat playthroughs like Demon's Souls bosses, though. Question: is the condition for getting the V.2 weapon for boss 2 cutting off its limbs? Cause I managed to get that which quite surprised me. Live from Anthrocon 2080!

I really struggle with dodging, I am playing with a controller and the keybind is leftbumper + rightstick either up or down and I just can't get it to be an automatic reaction, I keep going up or down on the left stick instead. I have been trying to train myself against the ARC robots but I keep messing it up.

Is it just me, or is the ironmaus armor kinda really overpowered? It has decent stats and it uses 0 core power, which makes it really hard to justify using any other set given how much room it leaves you for implants.

I have been using the chrysalis armor and the implant that gives you health on execution and I can gain like 1/4 to 1/3 health back per kill. It owns. I really wanna use gorgon/Cerberus armor but it makes me so drat slow. Also the walkthrough on the wiki has some weirdness information regarding the nucleus. I can't figure how to get to a specific set of stairs they reference. What's the max number of v5 vital boost and vital injects, anyone know?

These security guards in area 2 are real dicks. I can't figure out what causes their two hit combo, but it kills me instantly and you can't block or dodge out of it, as far as I can tell. I just want that staff.

The first pair chain when you strike whichever one you drone pull, this was a really nasty surprise for me. Killing them is hard but the staff is worth it. I just went for it over and over until I got it and it only took about 5 tries in the end. I got very lucky in that one of them spawned with no armour on his right arm so I was able to take him out quick and get him to drop the staff.

Christ. I figured out how to kill those Smelters, all right; you can duck under their "swing crane around" attack and you're supposed to target the panels on the sides when they open up, or their feet if no panels are open. Trouble is, the only one left to kill is the one in the middle of a toxic wasteland and even wearing Liquidator armor I take so much damage trying to destroy that thing. How a I supposed to do it, carry nothing but health injectors?

My pro tip for that one is to remember there's a health injector refilling machine up the nearby stairwell. I just chugged health injectors while smacking away at the thing till I was out, then ran away and refilled them, and its health hadn't regenerated by the time I'd come back.

Stock up on as many injectors as possible and go to town on the smelter. When you have all the coins I recommend using them to buy a refreshing drink.
