It's still weird every time I remember that she directed an episode of Twin Peaks. She put a lot into it, too, and wrapped up the storylines that preceded it very well, and very weirdly. I always say the storylines are bad, but they're worth watching just for her episode.

Joan Chen spoke at the screening of Twin Peaks last night and actually talked about being so excited to be directed by Diane Keaton. She said she couldn't remember any of the actual scenes she shot in either season of Twin Peaks, but she was excited when Diane was on set and giving her direction.

She also talked about requesting to be written out of the show because he had a film role offered to her. She said in the early 90s TV was considered a completely disposable medium and tv actors would jump at the chance for film. So she left Twin Peaks for a low budget Australian drama that bombed at the box office and killed its director's career (Turtle Island.)

She seemed a bit befuddled that 35 years later there were two giant auditoriums filled with people, many of them in their early 20s and dressed in Cooper and Laura cosplay, watching Twin Peaks. She asked everyone to come watch her new film, "Montréal, ma belle", because her interest is still much more in film than tv. She also talked about what she felt was the golden age of film in the mid 80s where shoots would last for 8 months and actors could be on set with their colleagues really getting into the character for the whole duration of the shoot, even if they weren't in any scenes that were being shot at that time. But I'm not sure if that period of time actually existed or it's just she had a few experiences like that by chance. It doesn't seem like Hollywood would throw that much money around systemically.

I don't think that working environment was typical even then, but there was a lot of high stakes betting on productions with terrible cost control. was kind of that era for the music industry too, a sense that the gravy train was going to keep rolling and to just focus on getting big hits
