Previous thread that spans 8 years of Twin Peaks discussion.

Many thanks to those who participated in the series rewatch from August 2019 to May 2020. It was a fun tradition and I enjoyed revisiting the series with y'all!

Watch in this order to (help) avoid being lost: Season 1 > Season 2 > Fire Walk With Me > The Missing Pieces > Season 3

It also helps to familiarize yourself with Lynch's film work like Mulholland Drive, Lost Highway, Inland Empire, etc., as Twin Peaks shares themes and actors with them.

Also this is topical: Flying Lotus remixed the Twin Peaks theme recently, though personally I find it pretty boring and it sounds like a remix that anyone could do. There are any number of piano/guitar covers of the theme song on YouTube that are more interesting to me than this.

Is there a consensus we can come to as to when FWWM takes place? Is it a prequel to the original series or does it take place during an alternate timeline?

I started watching Twin Peaks for the first time properly just recently. I'm an episode away from the end of season 1 and am really liking it, then I saw that season 2 is 20+ episodes and according to the OP the middle third are "mad sketchy" so I doubt I'm gonna get through them in a rush :smith:
If you treat Season 2 as close to the same length as Season 1, you'll be fine. The main plotline gets wrapped up in like the first third of the season, so after you finish with that, just skip to the finale. You'll be bypassing a lot of really terrible subplots and getting some closure at the end of the series ( just kidding :v: ).

For me, I noticed a dramatic dip in quality after the green zone ends that it doesn't really recover from until the end. I watched it because I'm a completionist, and there are some moments in there that are so stupid they're fun, but I absolutely would not call most of it necessary, even if you're a fan of the the first season/first third of the second season.

Like the guide says, every episode gives clues to the mythos of the series, but I'd say you're better off watching a Season 2 recap video on YouTube or something to get a summary of those clues than actually watching dull episode after dull episode after dull episode.

Something like this, though obviously only watch it if you've watched the good parts of Season 2 and you're sure you don't want to watch all the bad episodes:

FWWM is supposed to take place in the days leading up to Laura's death, but there are several things in the movie and The Missing Pieces that make that timeline very unclear, like Annie saying "My name is Annie. I've been with Dale and Laura. The good Dale is in the lodge, and he can't leave. Write it in your diary."

But there is poo poo already in that in the show Dale and Laura sharing the same dream and happening weeks apart
There's also Philip Jeffries disappearing in and out of time after investigating "Judy".

quote:

In an early draft (dated July 3rd, 1991) Phillip Jeffries first appears in a Buenos Aires hotel where the head clerk hands him a note from a "young lady." Soon after, Jeffries appears in Cole's office in Philadelphia where he tells the assembled agents he's "not gonna talk about Judy." Jeffries says, "I want to tell you everything, but I don't have a lot to go on. But I'll tell you one thing: Judy is positive about this." Then Jeffries drops a fascinating detail: "Her sister's there, too. At least part of her."

This early draft of the script provides strong evidence that Judy was a living person whose note to Jeffries compelled him to go to Philadelphia to tell Cole, "everything." (After all, "Judy is positive about this.") This script also introduces a second mysterious person to identify – Judy's sister. It is possible that this sister may be Josie Packard who "died" in the TV series but whose spirit seemed to live on in the walls (and drawers) of the Great Northern hotel. Robert Engels attempted to clarify some of these early draft mysteries in an interview that appeared in Wrapped In Plastic 58: "The thing behind Judy has to do with where David Bowie [Phillip Jeffries] came from …. He was down there [Buenos Aires], and that's where Judy is. I think Joan Chen [Josie] is there, and I think Windom Earle is there. It's this idea that there are these portals around the world, and Phillip Jeffries had one hell of a trip to Buenos Aires and back! He really doesn't want to talk about Judy because that reminds him of whatever happened to him." When asked if Josie, therefore, could be Judy's sister, Engels replied, "Yes. Yes, I think that is true."

And to quote David Lynch himself when he gave a surprise Q&A at a Television Critics Association event:

quote:

Q: Are the events in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me important to the revival?

David Lynch: I can say it’s the story of Laura Palmer’s last seven days, it’s very much important for this.
So mining FWWM/The Missing Pieces for clues to how Season 3 will play out might not be such a bad idea.

It's definitely more accessible than any other Lynch stuff I've seen, but it also doesn't exactly feel indicative of his style as a whole either, so I don't know that I'd tell anybody to watch it as an introduction to Lynch.

I'll have to watch The Straight Story at some point. Honestly, seeing the G rating and "Walt Disney Pictures Presents" makes me very curious as to how the hell he got involved with that because those are two things I would never associate with Lynch :stare:

I rewatched both Lost Highway and Mulholland Drive for the first time in years today to get ready for new Twin Peaks. Man, those make little to no sense while watching them, but they're fascinating when you fit all the pieces together in your mind afterwards. They go from seemingly making no sense to making complete sense, it just takes some thought to get there.

Except Mulholland Drive which becomes abundantly clear in like the last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie.

Probably both.
I'd assume more FWWM and less weird Ben Horne poo poo because FWWM was all Lynch's doing and the weird Ben Horne poo poo was the writers trying to emulate Lynch's weirdness after Lynch had distanced himself from the show. The new season is 100% Lynch-directed.

The login from the free trial you make on the iPhone app can be used with Showtime Anytime, so you can watch it on your PC. There's also the option to add the channel to your Amazon account, and once you do that, you may be able to watch Showtime stuff through Amazon Video apps on various device, though I'm not sure about that.

I just finished watching episode 4. Man, was that more Lynchian than I could've possibly hoped for :allears: It's way less original series and way more FWWM/Mulholland Drive/Lost Highway/Blue Velvet and I am totally okay with that. The "pure heroin version of David Lynch" comment was spot on especially with stuff like the creepy demon spirit in the glass box that's going to be in my nightmares tonight and the entire first 10 minutes of episode 3.

While it's pretty far from most of the tone from the original series, the humor has not been lost. Everything with Dougie at the casino and his house had me laughing uncontrollably, as did the Wally scene, although that was painfully awkward and I hope he's not in the remainder of the season much.

I've seen 4 episodes of this show so far and I feel like I have barely any more answers to the questions I had at the end of Season 2/FWWM than when I started, and not only that but lots more questions have been raised, so thanks David!
