My neato botvac keeps parking itself 10" away from the charging dock after finishing a cleaning run, slowly draining its battery until it shuts down.

I think maybe all the dog hair made it suicidal :(

sup, bitch?
roombas are pretty bad and dumb. I have one and every time it runs I have to find where it ended up because it will almost never find its way back to the charger. it likes to get stuck on air vents. going from wood floor to thick rug depends on the angle of attack as to whether it succeeds or not, meaning it can get itself into spots it will never get out of. sometimes it closes the bathroom door and wedges itself in the corner behind it, blocking it. it swallows cords at every opportunity. roomba versus dog poop is a bad time.

it's really only good for reducing the dust level a little and I'm not sure it's worth the effort of dealing with it.

fun fact, they are programmed in lisp.

you kind of have to setup your house around having a roomba

when I got a new place, I got a roomba and had to basically hide every cable. which is not a bad thing if you don't want people to get the impression that you live in a cyberpunk hellscape

depends on height and angle of slope. normal rugs it has no problem with. I don't have any thresholds tho.

My Roomba experience has been pretty good but you definitely need to keep cables up and out of its way or it will eat them up every time. This is really not a big deal cause cables lying around look bad anyways. Sometimes when its cleaning my office it will get behind the door and then push it closed, trapping itself inside. The original battery is ok and the newer model the better the battery life (generally speaking) but I had problems where it would get tired and fall asleep before finding its way home, especially after having the battery for a few years. I replaced it with a higher capacity after market battery and it works great and always finds its way home now unless it gets stuck on cables or traps itself in a room.

it gets trapped often though and the model i have is really stupid doesnt memorize the house, or paths, or anything. so it blindly bumps around for the first time, every time

its a good vacuum but a bad robot

my parents had one in 2005 and they sucked, from the sounds of it it hasn't gotten better. Isn't there a competing robot line that uses lidar or some remote sensing to do better? That's what I'd go with.

The neato botvac has a badass rotating laser turret that does SLAM mapping of your house

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hf1zY8vRC2E

Sadly they never made this visualization available to end users, but at least the wifi connected model lets you see a summary in the app:

problem is all these other bots with expensive sensing and mapping are still worse at cleaning than a roomba so kramering around a room until your battery dies is optimal

Shaggar

maybe let you dog out of the house when it needs to poo poo

r u ready to WALK
Sep 29, 2001

actually the trick is to schedule the robot to run at 6:30am instead of leaving it home alone with all the dog barf and poo

it becomes an extremely efficient alarm clock, I challenge anyone to sleep through the racket it makes when vacuuming, banging into all your furniture and slamming down on the floor

also you can get out of bed and hit the panic button if something smells fishy
