I don't really notice Murray doing anything that MAF doesn't. But there's definitely something to be said about a team trusting a goalie more, and changing their play in front of a goalie.

Last year everyone gushed over how good vasilevskiy was (and he was good) but as a lightning fan, you could tell the team didn't trust him as much and didn't play as aggressive.

It sucked last year and blew the year before. It sucked and blew. Like some sort of didgeridoo

Ginette Reno posted:

Maf played super well and all but I'm not surprised the Pens possession game is picking up with Murray back in. He's just so much more controlled. He makes it a lot harder for the opposing team to get sustained pressure.

Be curious to see if any advanced stats accounted for that. Goalies that can get whistles and control play well are quite helpful not just for the obvious reason of not giving up bad goals but they kill play and give a chance to get possession back.

there was a fancy cats article this season talking about how they had gone through video of Luongo's games and determined where they wanted guys to be set up to cover his weaker areas, and it was part of why Reimer struggled at first when he was playing in the system. they eventually went through and did the same for Reims to make sure that the guys on-ice knew where to be and everything to help make that night's goalie the best he could be. I bet this is a big part of what you see differently when Murray is playing vs. MAF or Bishop vs. Vasilevsky

I really enjoy the Penguins' version of turtling, which is based on the concept that it's very hard for the opposing team to score when the puck is in their end

Could definitely be true, although Maf has been on the Pens for so long and was their starter even just a season ago so you'd think they'd be used to covering his weaknesses.

Daley and Hagelin looking like themselves is definitely not hurting either. They were pretty bad the first two rounds and clearly not 100%.

Being used to covering his weaknesses isn't necessarily the same as being good at covering his weaknesses though. It's possible Murray's skillset is easier on very slow defensemen than MAF's

e: it's also possible that all of this is completely random
