Jack2142 posted:I think the problem with all the Battletech Games where you run into Lights v Assaults issues is simply the fact you have 4 slots total. If the choice was bringing in a lance of say Jenner's vs a single Atlas I could see the logic of going with the four light mechs. Total lance tonnage could help with this, but so could environments. Worlds where the soil, ice, foliage, etc mandates certain classes or at least severely restricts terrain could work.

Speaking of builds, beyond very basic/obvious stuff, where should I be focusing upgrades to the spaceship? Things that straight up make mech repairs faster make sense, but vague things like "power grid improved" don't really explain themselves.

I loved MechCommander back in '98 and even that had missions with lower tonnage to force you into solving missions with something other than your four biggest mechs every so often. I wouldn’t be surprised to see that later or in an expansion. It would help vary choices and gameplay.

I really like my close-in laser hunchback and how he just jumpjets into the fray, shits lasers all over people, hopefully survives the next round, and gets the gently caress out of there or finishes up, as required. On the rest, maybe enough to handle a medium laser hit or possibly two medium laser hits for the CT rear armor in case of speedy little scout-bots getting behind me.

I just poo poo a billion lasers and missiles at everything I see. I score a hell of a lot more headshots than I receive. On the other hand, I don't yet have big blap-guns that just torch someone in a shot or two, so maybe that's why my death by a thousand pricks method lands more headshots.

Finally have a Kintaro, Wolverine, Hunchback, and obligatory Shadowhawk. Now I just need a Griffin to round out a line of premier 55T mediums. Meanwhile, a Thunderbolt and Dragon sit ignored in storage.

I just got it way before the Kintaro, and so I want to try out all these mediums at once. Then again, I also just got a Black Knight and haven't even refit it yet, so maybe it's time to start running heavies. Wolverine looks too good not to run it.

Ran into my first grasshopper and very neatly disabled it with most systems in tact. And then killed all its allies. Only lost some B-team recruit on the mission, which I'm fine with, given that it was a 2-skull mission that ended up being a multiple-Heavy and a lance of very capable medium mech ambush on my lance.

Got a grasshopper and strapped it full of MGs and lasers and charge into battle. It kills stuff real good until I inevitably overextend and get loving creamed while my more sensible mechs haul the remains back to the drop ship. Maybe I need a more reasonable load out and tactic.

Now that I'm a lot better at the game than when I first started out, injuries are pretty drat even across the board. The only one that felt like it was just a headshot taking machine is the Catapult, but that's probably just confirmation bias after a particularly long-range slugmatch where my Catapult-K2 and the enemy Catapult-K2 ate 2 headshots each in the course of maybe 4 rounds.

The 2H can actually fit two AC/5 thanks to having more ballistics hardpoints, but you're mostly limited by weight anyway, so it depends on how paper-thin you want to make your armor. Yeah. Catapults and black knights have made my shadow hawk more or less obsolete but twin AC/5s are really nice for a direct fire supporter. And if that doesn’t work out, go punch someone!

I've had almost no trouble salvaging a every medium in the game, a fair mix of heavies, and now I have an assault (story) and 2/3 of two different assaults (procedural missions). What I'm woefully light on is anything beyond a handful of + or ++ weapons. RNG or should I be central coring everyone if I want to scavenge better weapons instead of risking blowing up arms and shoulders?

Coming back to this game after a looooong hiatus with a new campaign and just played the Smithon campaign mission. I beat it first try, but ended the match with 3 of my pilots injured, every mech at least partially damaged, if not massively so, and almost out of ammo, just plinking away miserably at a couple of enemy similarly crippled mechs until I just DFA'd them. What I'm saying is that lol, this owns.
