There is no goddamn asterisk this game was reffed exactly how cup final games have been for years

The NHL expressly included a rule this year to avoid situations like the one we saw in the deciding game of the Cup Finals, then inexplicably declined to actually use it. Quick whistles happen and the breaks even out over the long run, but man that was a bad call given the circumstances. Two years ago it's just one of those things, today it's one of the most puzzling decisions in league history. The only reason I can think of that it wasn't reviewed and deemed a goal is that the league and/or refs forgot that was possible.

I was a fairly neutral party leaning towards the Preds because I was a bit sick of repeat winners (but having nothing against the Pens), but man that was a bad, bad call. I wouldn't go far as to say there's an asterisk beside that win, but Preds fans certainly have a legitimate point of consternation with what transpired.

between the incoming mediocrity of the Red Wings and this post season i am not exactly excited for hockey next year. The preds could do some neato stuff and maybe the leafs will get their head out of their rear end but otherwise ugh

They had 5 powerplays plus Rinne grabbing Hags who based on Rinne's positioning was almost certainly gonna have a chance to score on the wrap. Terrible call for sure but it's not like they weren't given every chance and then some to get it back.

In 2009 there was handwringing about calling the Red Wings a dynasty even though

quote:

Five Stanley Cup titles in 12 years. The Red Wings have won, on average, a Stanley Cup every 2.4 years since 1997. Thirty teams enter each season with the express hopes and dreams of winning Lord Stanley’s Cup and the Wings have had a shot in each of the last 18 postseasons, a truly remarkable accomplishment.

3 in 4, and 2 have to be in a row.

And then we change it again if either Pittsburgh or Chicago does that.

I don't think we've had any true dynasties since the Islanders/Oilers in the 80s. Chicago and Pittsburgh are probably as close as you get in the modern era. If the Penguins win again next year, then yeah maybe.

I think 3 in 4 would get them that status. Doesn't have to be 3 in a row.

Sure, but they had a clear goal taken from them, and they were given a bunch of opportunities to score another. It's not the same.

You're free to disagree obviously, but for me this one feels a little different than 09 or 16.

Yeah I agree, 3 in 4 for Pittsburgh would make them a dynasty in my mind. That's why I can't say Chicago is a dynasty. 3 in 5 is obviously insanely good, but no sequential wins.

I mean if you can't enjoy a cup win based off of one bad call that's too bad.

Lot of roster turnover too which is kinda why you need the sequential wins. The first Chicago cup team was obviously much different from the third one.

the last time the blackhawks and the penguins met in the scf there was a terrorist attack and a helicopter crashed into the arena so despite the potential ratings bonanza i think that probably spooked the nhl from rigging things to make the two teams meet in the final again

Congrats to the Pens...in some ways it's a little amazing it took them this long between their first cup with Crosby and Malkin and these past two cups, just considering how much of a head start having two generational talents on the team gives you. Once they finally spent a little time getting a few good young players drafted and developed and made a few smart trades it really kicked things into gear.

On the other hand, their cup wins seem a little funny in how they were able to buck the possession stat trend and win by being a counter punching force with some mediocre D (this season at least). But again that goes back to having two generational talents in your forward group.

I think all the "what can we learn from the Pens!" articles that are already coming out basically need to start with "first you need some exceptional forwards" because for all the focus on speed and etc about the Pens, you still need guys skilled enough to put the puck in the net.

At any rate, interesting how it shook out from one perspective but kind of boring from another in that it'd have been a lot more fun for everyone not a Pens fan to see Nashville win.

I mean it helps that the past two years they fell rear end backwards into a superstar goalie and a young borderline star scorer. Especially Murray. I don't know if people appreciate just how good Murray is. He's kinda taken for granted a bit considering the team he's on but he's an elite goalie.

I'm happy with this result, having been a Pens fan as long as I can remember. Lot of guys I work with are pretty salty, and straight up hate Crosby, but whatever. I'd be happy for the Preds if they had won, fwiw.

Nobody who saw him in the playoffs this year should doubt his legitimacy. Having two credible #1 goalies you can pick from is just huge.

My theory is that Matt Murray will probably continue to be overlooked as an elite goalie because he has a dull name, a dull and ugly face and no noticeable personality.

He's really awesome though.

Yeah, you guys got ridiculously lucky that MAF played as well as he did until he finally turned into a pumpkin, but by that time Murray was all ready to go.
