So just starting out and already blundered by not using a referral link.

I like Shermans and T-34s in real life so have started pushing towards those.

What's the deal with all the bots?

Also does everyone just play German tanks? Seems like the queue is always a buttload of wehraboos. A nice practical Panzer IV would be cool though.

When you first start out the game matches you against bots to ease you in. Also Germany is both strong across all tiers and is the flavor of the month so there's an absolute ton of people queuing for them right now.

Ah that explains it. I was wondering why I was so good:

Is most of the player base in the realistic mode? That one I don't get bots but arcade is 90% bots.

I wish the bots wouldn't ram you at full speed for no apparent reason. I've been zeroing in on one of the 2-3 other players in the match then wam, spun out by an ally bot...thanks bud

edit: What does "You can ignite aiming reticle light in sniper mode" mean?

Yeah getting an M4A1 got rid of bots. Of course now every game is the whole team getting spawn camped. So uh, yay.

Oh look an enemy tank...gonna right click to zoom a bi------------------------

*view wildly spins 360 to lock on to a random airplane*

*dies*

How do I stop right click from randomly targeting airplanes?? I just want to slightly zoom..

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Deleted the ol' binding no more shameful locking without the ability to unlock target.

What determines what tiers you fight against? Get absolutely destroyed by Tier II tanks when I've got tier I, seems kinda silly.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Ah, so because the T-50 is rated 2.7, it's dragging me into matches against various KV-1s. Therefore making my other two 1.0 BR tanks just totally useless.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

How do you one shot vehicles? I'll die in a hit, but sometimes I have to dump ~15 shots into someone before they die. It appears their men are getting hit but just nothing happens.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

I was def just shooting the same dudes and same parts over and over thinking they weren't dead quite yet.

They really gotta spread dudes out in some of these tanks, like the T-34 everyone just dies all at once!

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

I've got a soviet tank in a mission (they have red icons). So figure hey I'll do a plane match. But when I try to switch to airplanes it says "you cannot change vehicle for locked crew".

I'm not trying to do whatever change vehicle for locked crew is, I just want to switch to airplanes? Do I somehow have the same crew driving tanks and flying planes??

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Ah, yeah I accidentally loaded up that "defend the point from Ai waves" and left after my first tank was destroyed.

Tried a realistic battle and I somehow team killed an airplane randomly as a tank? No idea how.

Probably you fired some high explosive shell and they were close enough to get caught in it. Hell, I've even seen machine gun bullets ricochet off a tank and kill a plane.

I'd fired a shot which ricocheted off an enemy, then was banging away with the mg so lol probably did nail it with the ricochet.

Realistic mode seems like it'd be cool if 90% of people actually left the spawn.

What if we had a map...but then make it so dark you can't even see your own tank?

appropriatemetaphor

What's with all the people who just ram their planes? Seems kinda dumb.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Isn't there a separate naval game already?

If I'm doing tank arcade battles, what determines the plane I get when I call one in? Seems just random?

appropriatemetaphor

Is there any way to get the bushes for free? Seems kinda pay to win to make your tank super invisible.

appropriatemetaphor

What's a good airplane nation? Haven't really done planes.

Or least who's not like the trash tier shame trap.

All of the plane nations are excellent. What kind of flight style do you prefer? Close turning dogfights, bombing or long range diving attacks?

Hmm, long range diving maybe first then turn fighting. Bombing pretty meh unless it's dive bombers.

Tank wise I've got USSR/USA up to tech 2, minimal playing for the others. So perhaps russia it is, get one of those fancy ilyushins.

Where do the tanks actually shoot from? Just the tip top of the cupola?

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Yeah just confused about when an enemy tank is behind the crest of a hill, where I can only see the cupola, but they manage to nail me in the hull when it seems like they should just be wiffing rounds into the hill.

Also last I checked, the killcam doesn't show arcing trajectories, just point to point.

You can also shoot through bushes and other obstacles obviously, using the binoculars to line up the shot to get a clear view.

I had one where the killcam showed the shell just falling out of the sky and killing me through the roof of the tank. It was shot by a T-34 or all things. Bizarre lob? Weird bounce? Who can say.

Holy moly stealth owns. I'm doing arcade mode though so don't really even need the tracers anyway.

Got 10 of the team's total 14 kills...people don't have the same uh oh reaction to tracers.

Escorting a bomber friend is pretty fun.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

How do you deal with someone just head-on attacking you in a plane? Best I've come up with is just start shooting way early like between .5-1.0km and hope something hits then wildly juking.

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

So how do you get to a bomber? They start so high it takes almost the entire match to even get to one. Is it some specific plane type?

EDIT: To be clear though, yeah, under-ranked tanks mostly become sub-par pretty quickly, particularly those that rely on armour, for Arcade it's best to have three tanks of roughly the same rank in your lineup.

What's roughly? I've got Soviet tanks at 4/4/4.3 right now which seems good. But then there's a big big jump to the first variant of the t-34-85 (like 5.3? 5 something). So seems like suddenly my other tanks will be unusable garbage.

Should I just sorta hold off on the 85 until I've got the IS-2 and KV whatever? Whatever the ~5ish Soviet trio is.

How does spotting work in arcade? Like what makes you "spotted" and how do you get unspotted?

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

Ah so if I'm far enough away they can't see me? I ask because I flanked the enemy team in arcade in a KV-1, and blew up like 3 dudes in a row and they didn't so much as look in my direction.

What's the deal with lit vs dimmed spots? Lit is just literally in my own line of sight and dimmed is within an ally's line of sight?

appropriatemetaphor
Jan 26, 2006

chitoryu12 posted:

Yeah, dimmed means they're not in your direct line of sight and you can't hit them (unless they're behind something like a wall, small hut, or train boxcar that your cannon can just shoot through). Keep in mind when you're in third person that the large circle is where you're aiming and the small circle is where the gun is actually going to hit. You can track enemies from behind a destructible wall and shoot them by putting the big circle over them as long as you're close enough to the wall that your camera can see over it.

If they're not in LOS is there some timer for them to disappear completely? Or is it just that some rando teammate still has eyes on them and when they don't the dimmed one will disappear.

edit: Is the M4A3 (105) just useless garbage until you unloak the heat shells? It seems to be slow and hurt nothing.

I think the marker disappears entirely once they're out of your team's line of sight. If they disappear behind something but the marker remains as dimmed, someone else can see them.

Ah k. I like the idea of being able to be a bit sneaky. But the few times I've tried RB it's just 90% tank destroyers just kinda camping and everyone just taking pot shots at each other at long range.
