I would youtube Rex vs. Ray, Old Snake vs. Ocelot, and maybe the graveyard scene from 4 at least.

I'm honestly not sure what PW and 5 brought to the table in the end, other than usually being kind of fun to play. Basically everything actually relevant to bridging the gap from 3 to original Metal Gear is relegated to the last batch of cassette tapes you get after finishing the final story mission.

I believe in a universe that doesn't care, and people that do.

Revengeance ---------------> 3, twin snakes, 1, 2, ------------->5,---------->Peace Walker,----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------->Snake's Revenge, 4

I didn't play/watch enough of the others to judge.

hosed up how much I enjoyed Peace Walker. Hands down my most-played MGS game by a total landslide, just loved everything about it. The artstyle, the mechs, the strangelove-rear end story, the base building, it's so cool.
By extension I ended up loving 5 because it's more of the same kind of thing.
The other MGS games are undoubtedly better in all kinds of ways. But in terms of the amount of fun I had with the series, nothing else comes close.

I also like Ghost Babel, so I guess my brain doesn't work.

I didn't like what twin snakes did, it was graphically a better game but I liked MGS1 on PSX better since Snake wasn't backflipping off of everything.

I get why a lot of people were bummed that V had "less" story or whatever, but A) I love the narrative of V and think the cutscenes are some of the best in the series and a remarkably restrained MG game (especially coming off of 4) and B) if it had 0 cutscenes I wouldn't care because I still played it for 120+ hours to 100% and did it again with a PC mod to make every mission in Subsistence mode. Well I didn't 100% it again but I played through most of it again

Peace Walker is also a lot better when you can play it on something with two analog sticks.

I think I would've been much more in the mood for 5's understated story if the game was about a quarter as long as it was and not over 100 hours of replaying the same missions/side ops over and over with just slight flavor variations. The Fox engine is a lot of fun but even it can't sustain that for that long. By the time I got to the end and found out there were no story reasons to play the missions in [] (like [Extreme], [Total Stealth], etc.) I just said gently caress it and rushed through it to get to the end.

having quiet and diamond dog was cool, all the neat stuff you could do was cool.

but also...

metallic archaea, sahelanthropus' design (no thank you), the child escort mission, the empty open world...

Absolutely, they're extremely well directed! Huey's trial is probably my favourite singular moment in the whole series.

Also what was the point of putting fast travel points in bases that require you to sneak to reach them, but can't actually use them if enemies are in alert, and if you do use them you can't actually move because you're of course surrounded by dudes in the next base.

Then don't make me have to get around the map to do all kinds of Side Ops, the alternate being waste a poo poo ton of GMP to just call in the helicopter constantly. At least in Africa you can just drive everywhere.

I like msg4 too, and I also don't hate act 3 (it gets much more interesting on higher difficulties iirc) but act 4 is fairly bad imo because the armbots aren't fun to sneak around or engage with at all and act 5 is barely there. Half the cutscenes are amazing and I wouldn't change a thing, a quarter of them needed to be heavily edited and the remaining quarter just didn't need to be there.

MGS3 was my first Metal Gear followed by MGS2, which was a great way to experience 2 because after the Cobra squad and Volgin's lightning power and The Sorrow helping from beyond the grave the supernatural stuff in 2 was no big deal and since I had no nostalgic attachment to Solid Snake I didn't mind playing as Raiden most of the time.

I know it's an old point, but I love how people whined about wanting to play as Solid Snake instead of Raiden in MGS2, but when you finally get to play as Solid Snake again in MGS4, you're a tired old man and Raiden is a cyber badass running circles around you.

I'm pretty sure the only time people should be surprised by supernatural stuff in MGS is in whichever game they play first.

MGSV had a real good story right up until it cutoff without an ending.

Vocal Chord Parasites are one of the coolest ideas in a scifi story. It's like Kojima read Snow Crash and went "hold my beer".

Also, a lot of people have complained about escorting the children, but I don't know why. It's not hard, and it's a great story mission.

Remember when after you beat the boss you were treated to a half hour long codec tragedy about the brutal trauma that the woman you probably just killed had experienced? And then you could go into a fashion shoot(?!) mode for which Kojima had obviously set up hours and hours of mocap sessions with the models he had cast?
