Heres a simple question - why did we know Paige and Sage? They were both attractive yes but it certainly wasn't their talent that made them known in our spheres and they aren't the only attractive fighters (if it was that Alan Jouban would be huge).

To think they have had no pushing or advertising and they got themselves over by just a youtube Dana video is idiotic at best and outright cognitive denial at worst.

It's clear as day they want TJ v DJ so they can book Cody v TJ as champion v champion with a belief that Cody can be a future Conor.

They don't care who has the belts, they just want the storylines. This is fine in some ways (i.e. Bisping v Hendo) but less so when you're loving over several divisions for one potentiality.

Being intelligent or actually good are additional bonuses.

This however does not actually mean who will be a supterstar, just who they push to be one. There is a reason this also keeps failing.

Never forget for with his contemporaries up until Chael, Anderson was their lowest drawing champion (LHW was marquee, welterweight had GSP, lightweight had BJ Penn and heavyweight was Randy/Brock). All of them were pushed more than him until someone else promoted him upwards.

I love MM and agree with him in principle on most levels. I also think Dana White is frequently lovely to fighters. But I just can't make myself expend the energy to argue against TJ as the next title defense when it is an objectively better fight on every level and is highly likely to give MM the biggest payday of his career. It takes two to tango and the vast bast majority of Mouse opponents go from prelims to main events against him. There's no attempt to make flyweight main event number one contender fights even though they are rich in talent because Mouse is prime Anderson making everyone below him look a jobber. He isn't given analyst spots, he isn't pushed as a person, he was a company man through and through until now and he's sick of being bottom of the totem pole because he is so loving good.

If this leads to a sort of anti-authority charactisation for him it might make him a name by accident as an outspoken revolutionary for fighters rights.

He’s smaller. He’s not the biggest guy. He’s dominant. Even when Anderson Silva was the guy running through his division, his points weren’t very high, so they have to get creative. I don’t know if they’ve gotten creative. But I do believe DJ has done his part.”

Cormier also believes the UFC needs to work on devising new ways to market African-American stars, while acknowledging that Johnson, who has a big following in the gaming community, often defies categorization.

“Honestly as an African-American, you have to market people differently,” Cormier said. “There is a different demographic and I don’t know if DJ really fits neatly into any certain one. Because just his family and everything, everything combined, you gotta get tricky marketing these small guys, especially an African-American guy. So the UFC doesn’t really know how to do that yet with him.

“But, you have to have ‘it,’ Cormier continued. “Ronda Rousey happened organically. It just has to connect. It hasn’t connected for DJ, UFC has to take responsibility because they don’t know how to market him properly yet.”
