Come to me .... and live forever.
Ink Master returns for season 9 of the hit tattoo competition, Tuesdays at 10pm EST on Spike. We've seen rivals battle, apprentices challenge masters, even judges collide. This season, it's all about the shops.

Two artists from the same shop compete as a team through Flash Challenges that provide the advantage of choosing who tattoos what, and the Elimination Tattoo where they will face the judges and be eliminated based on their ability to tattoo a live human canvas. The winner will receive $200,000, a feature in Inked magazine, and the title of "Master Shop."

BUT THAT'S NOT ALL! Every time one of these shops is eliminated, a new shop will take its place, featuring a returning artist who has competed for the title of Ink Master before, and failed. While they carry the experience of the competition, their partner is coming in fresh, and every other shop will have full knowledge of what brought them down. The elimination tattoos will be based on what got them eliminated, and every shop will form a new jury of peers in order to put one up for elimination.

THE SHOPS:

Allegory Arts of Florence, AL
-Ulyss Blair Co-Owner/Artist, 12 years' experience - his favorite styles include traditional and realism, he joins the competition alongside his wife Eva.
-Eva Huber Co-Owner/Artist, 13 years' experience - a gypsy spirit great at reading pepole, her illustrative flair balances Ulyss' bold style, hoping to put Alabama tattoos on the map.

Artistic Skin Designs of Indianapolis, IN
-April Nicole Artist, 8 years' experience - a headstrong artist with loud opinions, specializing in feminine and colorful styles, ready to bite back if someone calls her out on something she doesn't believe in.
-Dane Smith Artist, 6 years' experience - claims he thrives in competitive settings, and enjoys creating tattoos that flow and fit well on clients' bodies, including designing the 2012 Olympic synchronized swim team uniforms.

Black Anchor Collective of Hesperia, CA
-Carlos Rojas Artist, 15 years' experience - prides himself on attention to detail and considers himself one of the best realism artists in the country, which pairs with his "tell it likes I see it" attitude.
-Aric Taylor Artist, 25 years' experience - admittedly humble and his own worst critic, he enjoys realism with a twist, and plans to let his many years of art knowledge speak for themselves.

Classic Trilogy Tattoo of Cortland, NY
-Thom Bulman Owner/Artist, 10 years' experience - despite his tough looks, he describes himself as a big softy, enjoying new school and cartoony tattoos, and priding himself on his social following he hopes will help him win the competition.
-Derek Zielinski Artist, 12 years' experience - sure he'll get under people's skin, he practices a holistic and vegan lifestyle, as well as traditional, portrait, new school, and realism styles. He promises his clean lifestyle won't prevent him from fighting dirty.

Pinz and Needles of Baltimore, MD
-Jessy Knuckles Artist, 5 years' experience - known for her wildlife and animal portraits, she actually enjoys doing cover ups and her favorite styles include black and grey and color realism. As a mother of one, she's motivated to fight to the bitter end to take home the title.
-Allisin Riot Artist, 4 years' experience - confident her best friend Jessy will make them "the" team to beat this season, as she excels in the styles of new school, geometric, realism, and watercolor.

The Marked Society Tattoo of McDonough, GA
-Wes Hogan Artist, 17 years' experience - a kind, wise, and knowledgeable artist with a big beard you can spot a mile away, he describes his style as diverse and plans to let the others self-destruct before showing his stuff to eliminate the others one by one.
-Mike P Co-Owner/Artist, 5 years' experience - laid back and funny, his charm is lost when someone crosses him, and he describes himself as well rounded with super clean lines.

Thicker Than Blood of White Plains, NY
-Jhon Campuzano Artist, 8 years' experience - feels the rough times he faced growing up helped mold him into a strong person and better tattoo artist, well-versed in all styles but with black and grey as his go-to. He plans to use patience and his ability to work well under pressure to bring the win home to his wife and daughter.
-Babiery Hernandez Artist, 6 years' experience - very passionate about drawing and feels his artistry will put him above the rest, hoping to represent his family and make them proud as his inspiration for art.

Tri-Cities Tattoo of Atlanta, GA
-Bang Artist, 4 years' experience - began tattooing out of her dorm room before commissioning as an Army Officer, her styles include photorealism, portraits, sci-fi and surrealism, and she's on a mission to prove that artist of color are a force to be reckoned with.
-Danger Dave Artist, 9 years' experience - the son of a preacher, he rebelled and became a tattoo artist with a laid back demeanor but a loud personality when needed. His signature style is sculpture and draws inspiration from African themes, wanting to prove people of color are known for more than just "urban" tattoos.

Unkindness Art of Richmond, VA
-Erin Chance Owner/Artist, 10 years' experience - someone who literally moved across the world to broaden her art and career, her skills in New Zealand trasfer to the States with her color illustrative work, and her passion is unrivaled in the competition.
-Doom Kitten Artist, 6 years' experience - despite not tattooing very long, he feels confident in his neo-traditional style, and plans to use his skills as a gamer to pick apart the strong artists one by one with careful strategy.

THE JUDGES

Oliver Peck - Owner of Elm St. Tattoo and Original True Tattoo with 20+ years experience and world records in tattooing. He won Peck vs. Nunez and Nunez didn't.

Chris Nunez - Partner in Ridgeline Empire, former cast member of Miami Ink. He has his own wikipedia page and Oliver doesn't.

Dave Navarro - Founding member of Jane's Addiction. He likes to hang out.

As always, a new season of Ink Master: Redemption premieres right after Ink Master at 11pm EST. Over a hundred artists competing means as many angry human canvases wanting redemption for the poor tattoo they got on the show.

Plus, remember the Girls' Alliance from last season, consisting of Kelly Doty, Gia Rose, Nikki Simpson, and eventual winner Ryan Ashley? Well, Spike sure does, and that means everybody's favorite contestants are back! Coming this Fall, following this season of Ink Master, it's Ink Master: Angels featuring the top female competitors traveling the country to go head to head with some of America's most talented tattoo artists in a series of challenges. Whoever does the best will earn a spot on Ink Master season 10, coming in 2018.

Results: Katie defeated Aaron, Matt defeated DJ, Noelin defeated Bubba, Christian defeated Eva, Ulyss defeated Doom, Marvin defeated Erin, and Cleen defeated Tommy.
Best Tattoos: Cleen & Aaron
Eliminated: Allegory Arts, Ulyss & Eva, due to Eva's weak compass tatttoo and the feeling that their middle of the road performances had finally caught up to them. The jury of peers also voted them the worst.

*Episode Thirteen
Skill: Self-Promotion
Immunity Challenge #1: Whatever the Canvas Wants, as shops get five minute interviews with each canvas, who then pick by random order what shop they want. Best tattoo gets immunity from elimination.
Winner: Christian & Noelin
Immunity Challenge #2: Whatever the Canvas Wants, with canvases doing a random draw, and then choosing shops based solely on the previous challenge tattoos. With only four canvases, the shop that is not chosen is automatically up for elimination.
Best Tattoo: Erin & Doom. Black Cobra was not selected by a canvas and advance to the elimination.
Elimination Tattoo: American Traditional Snakes. The style was chosen by the first winning team, and the subject was chosen by the second.
Eliminated: Empire State Studio, Tommy & Marvin, due to their snake having odd belly scales that went different directions, and for Old Town outedging them in the week's tattoos overall.

*Episode Fourteen
Skill: Cohesion
Flash Challenge: Blend a nude 3D model seamlessly with a flat 2D background.
Winner: Cleen & Aaron
Elimination Tattoo: Asian Deities
Best Tattoo: Bubba & DJ
Eliminated: Golden Skull Tattoo, Cleen & Aaron, due to having anatomically incorrect hands that stood out above their otherwise solid Buddha piece. The jury of peers also voted them as the worst.

*Episode Fifteen
Skill: All
Tattoo Marathon: Each shop will design a tattoo based on a random draw theme, that every shop will then tattoo. Basilica drew Geometric, Old Town drew Black & Grey, Black Cobra drew American Traditional, and Unkindness drew Shop's Choice, choosing Illustrative Fantasy.
Results: Katie won Geometric, Christian won Black & Grey, Matt won Fantasy, and Christian won American Traditional. As a result of the tie, the judges agreed that both Basilica and Black Cobra should advance to the live finale.
Face Off: Tag Team Tattoos on Two Canvases. The first canvas is the shop's choice, the second is up to the opponent. Old Town gave Unkindness an American Traditional Hot Rod, and Unkindness gave Old Town a color realism full body raven.
Eliminated: Unkindness Art, Erin & Doom, for their hot rod falling short as a six hour tattoo compared to the two excellent tattoos that Old Town produced. Old Town Ink advances to the live finale.

*Episode Sixteen - The Live Finale
Six Hour Live Tattoo: America chose one artist from each shop to complete a six hour tattoo live. America then votes on the best, the winning shop advancing to the final two.
Result: Katie's tattoo was voted the best by America over DJ and Christian, Black Cobra Tattoo advances.
Master Canvas #1: A thirty five hour back piece done in black and grey, with alternating artists between each seven hour session. The two shops that didn't win the live tattoo are judged, with only one advancing.
Result: Old Town advances over Basilica
Master Canvas #2: The final two shops are judged on their thirty five hour back piece done in color, also alternating, with the winner becoming Master Shop.
Winner and Master Shop: Old Town Ink, Bubba & DJ

First impression is that Classic Trilogy won't go very far due to big ideas they can't execute (and probably being in the nerd bubble.) Tri-Cities are already fighting, which means they'll make it until halfway at least, but it'll become a matter of when and not if they get eliminated. Allegory Arts strike me as top three.

Oh I don't disagree, but this competition finds a way to keep the drama queens around and so far they're the biggest. It's funny, but with Bang and the others like her, with respect to her race and gender and ambition, those who make a big deal about having something to prove because they're always underestimated, tend to be the ones who end up being loud and obnoxious and (unsurprisingly) at the bottom of the pack.

That Marked Society gator is awful though. Looks like a snake's body with a gator's face. Should have lost.

So there are new shops coming in every week. Guess that's how they stretch it beyond nine episodes.

Also nice to see the Redemption tradition of getting the craziest people to come back remains strong. This guy with the Bill tattoo is nuts.

Have to disagree. That gator last week looked like a snake, and this tiger was just as bad with the missing tooth. Lines aside, if they can't draw an animal, they deserve to go.

Redemption was pretty good at first, but it's pretty obvious at this point they tell the canvas to go in as mad and insulting and swearing as they can to create drama for the commercial, and then Dave steps in to quell it.

It's the big question that comes up every single year: at what point is it about report cards, if ever? They've sent people home on poor report cards and they've sent people home on poor tattoos that day. They've never been consistent with it.

That being said, I thought for sure they would keep Cleen. Although I hate to admit it, those hands are the biggest flaw that stands out among the set, even with the wonky anatomy on Black Cobra's. It's not a little flaw either, as Oliver pointed out, so they're pretty justified in being sent home. Nunez was trying real hard to keep them, that's for sure, but they did it to themselves.

Unkindness would be extremely lucky to make the finale, much less win the competition. I see it as Black Cobra placing third, and then a toss up between Basilica and Old Town. Consider that Old Town was the first returning shop and has survived since week 2, and they've had ups and downs, but proven their merit. If not Cleen, I'd think Christian is the favorite to win, but Old Town's definitely got a strong shot.

Say what you will about his cockiness, but Josh was consistently good throughout the season and managed to do things bigger and bolder than expectations. I think that's what gave him the edge.

It pretty much went as expected for both artists and coaches: Steve was at the bottom for doing solid, but typical work, Anthony busted out something unexpected that was done really well, but DJ manages something above and beyond going past the parameters of the challenge. Good season, hope next time is decent, because that confrontation between Cleen and Christian sounded pretty rehearsed.

Did anyone that had to tattoo on a butt actually tattoo on a butt?

I’m not super familiar with Ink Master; can anyone give me a quick run-down of why Cleen and Christian have so much animosity? I’m guessing they had a bad rivalry in a previous season, but is there anything more to it than that?

Season 7 featured new artists taking on veterans of the show. Christian was a new artist, and quickly established himself as the "master strategist," while Cleen was a former runner up in season 5. They naturally clashed due to being two of the stronger artists on the show. In the end, they both made it to the finale (where three artists compete for the title of Ink Master,) but both lost to another contestant, Anthony Michaels.

The rivalry was reignited somewhat in season 9, Shop Wars, when Cleen and another veteran artist of Golden Skull Tattoo in Las Vegas (so named after the golden skulls the show uses to hide the names of artists during canvas selections,) competed against, among others, Christian and his artist from Basilica Tattoo, also located in Vegas. Golden Skull came in fifth, while Basilica made it to the finale, but ended up third.

So essentially you have Cleen Rock One, who has lost the competition three times, and Christian, who has lost twice, and both are very excellent artists with shops in Vegas and big mouths/egos. Hence the perfect set up for the season.

I think Christian's putting all his eggs in TeeJ's basket at this point. It's unlikely that he'll have all three artists in the finale, unless Tiffer has a total meltdown. Tim can't do color, Amanda can't do design, and Chris is getting more and more heated as it goes on.

Tiffer, Tony, and TeeJ seems like the safe finale trio at this point.

It's funny, because every single artist is sensitive and defensive and argues every mistake to death, but the women always seem to be the ones that are quick to point out how sensitive the men are (and then the tears flow during critique and one of them walks out because she didn't get picked.)

The judging criteria is always wildly varied, and they manipulate it each episode to get rid of one person over the other. And yet, it can still be juuuuuuust barely justified. After all, Holli's house was crooked as hell, but if you're comparing the final two, Cam didn't follow the challenge. If you're judging overall, Cam edges out Holli, but Holli did better work on this day. I know they like to fall back on the whole "what really matters in the end is the ink on the skin" deal, and with that, you can kinda justify Cam's two similar tats versus Holli's roughly applied face.

It always feels like they give more slack to an artist who did well early on and is struggling vs. someone who hasn't really stood out and is very up and down.

Come to me .... and live forever.
Dani's was absolutely worse. I can't believe Oliver let that Eagle slide. Not since Tatu Baby do I recall a more egregious producer elimination.

Not that Cam's an awesome guy, but on the list of assholes this show has produced, he's pretty low on the list. Some muddy coloring and a couple slightly off swords vs. an owl with an eagle's head. Shenanigans I say. Worst part being, Dani is very unlikely to make the finale anyhow. I could understand if it was Laura who did that, but man. Ironically, if she had done the trash polka, she could have played with the negative space and the patterns to make up for the eagle not being full spread.
