Exactly my point.

I don't know if Microsoft has a hard rule about this but Sony definitely does for the PS4 and PS4 Pro, in that developers are not allowed to hold off features other than graphics/framerate from base console users. No "upgraded console only" games or gameplay features, no segregated multiplayer servers, nothing like that.

At the end of the day the core CPU doesn't undergo much of a jump on the Xbox One X compared to the original Xbox One so there isn't much in terms of "under the hood" improvements you can make to a game. It's like if you upgraded from an i5-6500 to an i5-6600K, it's not going to be making some incredible difference, so stuff like Destiny 2 is still 30fps because of the CPU but they were able to boost the resolution.

A small selection of games do have texture packs on Xbox One X and get enhancements that way. Some of the games with these nicer textures include Fallout 4, Rise of Tomb Raider, Middle Earth Shadow of War, and Quantum Break. It's not hugely common. I do believe some games do some more minor tweaks like how on PC you'll get benefits bumping some settings from "medium" or "high" to "ultra high", but I'm not sure how prevalent this is.

I see. This helps a lot, thanks.

Lots of people without the X talking with authority about the X in here. It's a huge leap in graphics from the Pro and virtually all new games have better textures/effects etc in addition to much higher resolution and better frame rates.

Almost all PC games are tethered to the weakest link console as well.

In terms of actually having higher resolutions textures it's a rarer thing (and I do own an Xbox One X, for the record), I think it's only something like 2 dozen games which actually have higher-quality textures, with the newest one being Conan Exile from May. I did some A/B comparisons with my PS4 Pro and some games I happened to have access to on both consoles, the degree of "bump" varies a ton and seems to hinge on whether or not there are the higher res textures more often than not (but there are exceptions, Overwatch doesn't have fancy textures but is enough of a bump on One X over the PS4 Pro). In fairness I don't have a crazy OLED whig-bang TV, maybe differences are easier to spot on a fancier set. I feel like it might be easier to suss out for a game where the PS4 Pro isn't native 4K and the Xbox One X is (like Far Cry 5).

For upcoming games I wouldn't expect any EA or 2K sports games to leverage higher-resolution textures, and it could be like the past games where there's effectively no difference from the PS4 Pro version which runs at native 4K. I doubt you'd see enhanced textures also for Starlink or Soul Calibur VI or Kingdom Hearts 3, just based on who's developing those games and how they're being released. Other games would even be in a "maybe" category, I could honestly see it going either way for Red Dead Redemption 2, for example, but I'd say it's more likely for stuff like Shadow of the Tomb Raider and rear end Creed Odyssey.

Well, yes.

edit: I guess if you never play non-Japanese AAA new games you might think games might not have much of an improvement either.

I'm not talking about 4K in general. Yes, that's a jump. I'm talking about going from a PS4 Pro to an Xbox One X.

It was a big enough jump up that I had no interest in owning a ps4 pro anymore.

As an owner of the pro and x, this guy is wrong. In fact from my own experience with multiplats on both the console fidelity parity has never been closer.

Falling for marketing schemes like “worlds most powerful system” must get old year after year... no?

To be fair the X hasn't even been out for one year, yet, although since it was announced well before we're probably on like year 3 of that marketing campaign.

I did an A/B comparison of Wolf II. There is a difference but it's extremely negligible.

Yes there is an “edge” which the xbonex takes but it’s no leap. A leap is going from an console to a 1070

Well, I said 1070 for brevity but a huge amount of that leap between the “worlds most powerful system(s)” and a midrange gaming pc is currently in the desktop cpu power so you probably should hesitate on that

Agreed. The difference is so negligible on third party games, most people wouldn't be able to tell a difference unless they're 3' from the screen and counting pixels.

That's a drat old controller if you have one without a standard headphone jack on the bottom. But if that's what you have, then yes, only an adapter will let you plug in headphones.

A pair of joycons is $70/£70. I wonder if you can even buy them separately new...

Honestly after a couple of years I don’t like how controllers get worn down in general after a lot of use, like the touchpad on a DS4 gets visibly worn down. New controllers feel really nice.

i mean i get that analog controllers are tough to get right, but my og xbox and gamecube controllers are all still good despite me having played both of those consoles a lot (my gamecube still gets regular use), as are my dualsock 1s, dual analog (yes i actually have one of these werid things lmao), and dreamcast controllers. i dunno what the gently caress happened since then that they are apparently made of duct tape and hope instead of real components that don't break after six months.
