You'll want to factory reset the box before you give it to him. If you are online when doing that you will get prompted to remove the Home Xbox associated with that console.

There is now an automatic captive portal app that should launch a web browser window when it detects you are in a captive portal situation. It may not always work, though. It should pop up after the initial network connection test.

You can check what your TV is telling the Xbox by going to Xbox Settings -> Video Output -> 4K Details. This is helpful to diagnose things like differences between various inputs (which there often are, both in HDR support and maximum refresh rate).

You have to have the dashboard set to 4K to see this button.

The problem is game play stuff is usually underwhelming, and filled with cringe-inducing banter from the players, so that doesn't work very well either. And if it's a game you aren't interested in, its a 15 minute coffee break that kills any momentum. It's really not a good forum to show anything other than quick snippets/trailers.

Probably too late on this but if possible try to connect to the internet when doing the factory reset. That will allow that console to be removed as home console for any previous accounts for which it was set.

Not a huge deal if you can't, though, as that old account won't be in the box anymore.

Are you sure you're plugged into an input that supports 24Hz? I don't know about the CX specifically but a lot of TVs don't support the same stuff on all inputs.

E: nm, sounds like it's fixed

The 4K details page should let you know if the input you are currently plugged into supports 24Hz, at least based on what the TV is telling the Xbox. (There are a surprising amount of TVBs that report incorrect data over that standard, EDID, but I'm assuming the CX being new and high-end that isn't likely to be an issue).

Otherwise, the flag just gives apps permission to switch the display rate to 24Hz, so if it's still not working it is likely to be an app issue.

I do kinda think it's weird that there isn't/wasn't some goofy Office365-gated, OneDrive-dependent version of Office on Xbox, especially considering Microsoft's unshakeable obsession with "the living room PC." The platform supports a keyboard and mouse - that and Edge would make the Series S a decent little $300 client for someone. My understanding is that Office gets to do whatever the gently caress they want so they were probably just like "lol no."

The thing to keep in mind is a living room PC itself is nothing but profit, as MS doesn't make the hardware. As consoles are usually sold at a bit of a loss, you wouldn't make money on people that didn't buy much software from you and could actually lose money.

I'm looking to get PC Game pass for 3 friends of mine so we can play stuff like Golf With Friends together. I'm going with PC Game pass because they each have Windows 10 PC that can handle the more indie games, but I think only one has a console. But they need Gold as well, right, to make sure we can play multiplayer on PC with games that use XBL as their multiplayer implementation?

Does that conversion thing still work? I think the one with the console might have Gold, so I thought I would look into that. Also, I'm assuming the ones with no prior XBL account should sign up for the $1 trial first, before I give them a redeem code.

This is all probably more complicated than it should be.

Having an absolutely baffling issue with the new EA Play via Game Pass for PC business.

Xbox Game Pass account linked with EA: check.
EA Play Experience (beta) app installed: check.

As far as I understand you're supposed to just be able to go to the page for the EA Play game you want in the Xbox app (like any other Game Pass game) and click "install". This will then open the EA Play Experience app, and you can install it from there. However, when the EA Play Experience app opens, all I can do is see purchase options.

I've triple-checked everything, the accounts ARE linked and they ARE the correct accounts. But for some reason this poo poo isn't working. And I can't unlink the account to try to re-link it because there's apparently a 6 month cooldown on linking a new account after unlinking one.

I had this happen at first as well, it seemed the EA app didn't know that I had the correct entitlements on my account. After a reboot or two it suddenly started working, but I don't think I did anything in particular to make that happen (other than maybe the reboot).

It's worth playing with Game Pass. I can't recommend buying it.

It released with game breaking bugs, then fixed most of them, then let some game breaking bugs bugs back in, but this update seems to have really fixed them.

I can't comment as much on the overall game design beyond the bugs - I haven't played any other action brawlers so I don't have anything to compare it to, but I discovered I really like action brawlers. I also freely admit I that am very biased because this is the first "grownup" game I played all the way through with my ten year-old daughter and it turns out she is a goddamned stone-cold goblin assassin with 80s movie quips at the ready at all times. She is basically Cattie-Brie made manifest in real life, so for me it was magical.
