Game Pass is great.

Agreed. I've had my Xbox One S since Feb of 2019, and unfortunately had like 5 months of Game Pass that ended up wasting away due having to move and stuff. I only had a chance to play Rise of the Tomb Raider on it, but that was fun. I recently added Game Pass Ultimate again with my stockpile of Microsoft Reward points, and then added 12-month EA Play codes for ~$20 (that converts to 4 months of Game Pass Ultimate) to get a year+ subscription. Been playing through Nier Automata for the first time; finished up Route A a few days ago and am currently making my way through Route B. Game is fun is hell and yeah, seeing all the new content added to Game Pass now that it has EA Play games is crazy. Such insane value.

I started my playthrough of Shadow of the Tomb Raider shortly before I had to move, but by the time I was able to settle in and start playing it again, it had already left Game Pass. That was a bummer, but I just picked up the definitive edition of the game yesterday for $9.85 using a $5 credit balance Microsoft gifted me and another 10% off the sale price using my Cash Card boost :haw:

As a general reminder Game Pass Ultimate comes with xbox live gold included so if you'd like to "own" 4 very middling/old as hell games a month* its cheaper than buying game pass and gold separately.

*Full Spectrum Warrior which is an interesting time capsule with unique design and a game Im still mad they hired a designer from for Gears 4 and still ended up with mediocre by not stealing from it.

As an aside, the cheapest conversion I've seen to stock up on Game Pass Ultimate is to buy 12-month EA Play codes for Xbox here: https://www.shopto.net/en/dwnld37378-ea-access-12-month-subscription-p180020/ for $21.91, which when redeemed converts to 4 months of Game Pass Ultimate. That's roughly $4.38 a month for Game Pass Ultimate. Unsure of how much it'll stack, as I only bought two codes, which was enough to put my subscription at just over a year in combination with the months I already had.

Does Xbox Live Gold convert 1:1 to Game Pass still? I thought I read somewhere it changed to 3:1 now, which is why I went the EA Play route. Also Shopit didn't charge tax for my orders.

Just to avoid any confusion, the 1:1 conversion only happens if you don't have an active Ultimate sub at the moment. You first redeem your Gold code(s) and then subscribe to Ultimate (probably have to pay the full price for a single month) to convert them into Ultimate.

However, when your Ultimate sub is still active, the conversion rate for 12-month Gold codes is 3:1.

Ooooh. So that's why I read some folk were letting their Ultimate sub expire first before doing the XBL Gold conversion. Ok. That makes sense.

Being relatively new to the whole Xbox thing, I think my plan right now is to just stick with my One S since I can't justify buying a new console right now. I've had my One S for less than 2 years anyways, and have only recently really started to actually play games on it lol. I'll just wait for the inevitable system revisions. I wonder what the naming scheme for those will be :haw:

I feel like for the casual-ish gamer like myself, exclusives aren't that big of a deal/are dealbreakers wrt console purchasing. I think Xbox's greatest draw is Game Pass anyways. Doesn't seem like any other service can match its value. I just wonder if Microsoft is eventually going to just ditch the hardware game and focus on xCloud.

Yeah, back when I got my One S in early 2019, I was kinda blown away that they had Shadow of the Tomb Raider on Game Pass lol. After seeing that, I resorted to only buying games either if they have a steep discount or are an older classic title I want to own. It's why I'm also debating purchasing CB2077 since it'll probably end up on Game Pass eventually, and I have a huge backlog of games already on Game Pass and Steam that I want to play through.

Been getting pretty good mileage out of Game Pass, since it currently has games I've been itching to play that I don't have on Steam. Currently going through Route B in Nier, and plan to play Fallen Order after that before I do the other Nier routes. I've also played a fair bit of Streets of Rage 4 and Tetris Effect. Yeah, having seen EA Play was coming to GPU, my plan was to buy a year's worth subscription of GPU as a buffer for me to earn enough reward points to indefinitely extend my subscription through reward points only. So far so good! I've already added 4 months of GPU to my sub through reward points and will probably max out the 3 years soon at the rate I'm doing all the dailies/quests/etc.

I still don't understand how you generate enough rewards points to ever pay for a month, much less an ongoing subscription.

I was sitting on ~42k points I made in like 3-4 months? And then stopped doing rewards for about a year up until just a few weeks ago. I've made 15k points in a little less than 3 weeks doing the bing dailies and game pass quests. Bing dailies when you're level 2 always nets 270 points each day (sometimes more depending on any extra quizzes/bonus email points or whatever). Completing various punch cards can net 50 to 1000+ points, depending on the tasks.

You can also get 60 points every day from opening the game pass mobile app (5 points), playing any game pass game (5 points), and earning an achievement in whatever game (50 points). There's also the game pass quest streak bonus thing that maxed out gives a bunch of points (not sure how much). It all adds up, but it's a fair bit tedious. I don't mind it though. 3 months of Xbox Live Gold costs 20k points, and I believe 3 month Gold codes converts to 2 months of GPU. I'll probably average around 20k points a month, maybe more maybe less.

A lot of people do! I don't blame them. $14.99 is cheap and convenient for basically Netflix for games. There are ways to get GPU cheaper or for free, but yeah, most people would rather not bother I'm sure.

Twerk from Home posted:

You’re well into hobby territory if you max out the Bing daily tasks and always keep a streak going, and getting an achievement every day also takes some thinking.

Daily bing searches are a breeze if you just do images searches. You don't even have to type since bing spits out a bunch of search suggestions for you to just click/tap on based on the first search term you input. I'd say it takes me no more than 5 minutes each day to get the 270 bing points. The 50 point achievement thing isn't something I'm actively always trying to get, personally. I usually just let that one come naturally when I'm playing whatever game I feel like.

[edit 2] I also get the 10 points every day for logging into the game pass app/launching an xCloud game just on my phone (don't have to play it).

So I've decided to knuckle down and play the Yakuza series.

One thing I did was make an 'On Deck' group and pin games I want to play through and finish or farm achievements from to it. I only have a handful of games in the group, like 4 or 5; gives a sort of tunnel vision effect, as I don't really browse the Game Pass library unless something new is added that I have an interest in.
