It will [sound/look/taste/etc] like poo poo, and nothing like the X you are copying," is basically the only advice anyone needs in any kind of creative endeavor. The only thing to add is that the more you do this, the farther away the original should be. Like for drawing, start with tracing, then copy by looking, then copy from memory, then copy your copy from memory.
