He plays for the dreamers that forgot how to dream, and the lovers that forgot how to love.
One thing I'm curious is if there is a schism between Moon and Star, what will River do? Who's side will he take, or will he abstain and try to figure things out for himself? He certainly has been given some food for thought in his interactions with the giant monster who only came over because he misunderstood a vague signal, and made a fairly reasonable request.

Synopses for the first two episodes have been released:

"The Bogbeast of Boggabah" – King River interrupts Star’s eager investigation into Eclipsa’s past and demands her help on a dangerous hunt.

"Total Eclipsa the Moon" – Moon enlists Ecplisa herself to access Mewni’s most guarded records.

Edit: Total Eclipsa the Moon is without question the episode I've been waiting for since Moon the Undaunted

An overall thing I'm hoping is that Buff Frog's children outside of Katrina grow up to be all different. It would be very easy to keep them identical, but right now they are still froglets, so when they reach full maturity I'm hoping for different builds and interests among them as opposed to them all being just smaller versions of their father. I'm thinking that Katrina will be either the only one to reach Buff Frog's swoleness levels or that she will surpass his strength though, the way she is growing so far.

I wonder if these two episodes will take place simultaneously, a la the babysitting one/Is Mystery. So Moon gets River to take Star on a wild bogbeast chase while she does some investigation of her own.

I'm looking for a flock of urbanmechs.

Sorry I'm late, but episodes 10+ floored me and I needed time to recover.

Warning! Spoilers Ahead!

While I normally try to avoid giving away essential plot details in these episode guides, season three has embraced serialization to the point that doing so is impossible. I've heard people call this or that episode "filler," but even the episodes without major plot progression introduce new characters. As such, while I'll try to be vague when describing each episode, you CANNOT read ahead if you want to read my guides before your first viewing.

You have been warned!

Episode 0305a: Scent of a Hoodie

With the Battle for Mewni over Marco has no reason to remain, and now that Star is taking her princess duties seriously she has no reason to go back to Earth. But even after Marco leaves, Star has trouble letting him go.

Fun facts: Star's new wand has replaced the old one in the intro. The titular hoodie isn't the one Star took with her in "Return to Mewni," it's the one Marco was wearing while he was trapped in the castle during Ludo's occupation. The first hoodie was destroyed and lost in the Sanctuary, and the second was covered in dirt and sweat because he had to wear it for weeks straight and presumably the Knights of the Wash weren't operating during the occupation. Another season brings another new dress; it's only appeared now because, much like Marco, Star was stuck in her season two dress for the entire Battle for Mewni. "See you on the flip, Marco," say the artists before literally flipping Marco. With Marco gone, Pony Head has resumed her role as Star's best friend, companion, and foil. "Lavabo" means "wash sink" in pretty much every Romantic language.

Food for thought: Once again we see that Marco and Star can't help thinking the same things as they dance a jig trying to get out of each other's way. They also have another matching idea by the end of the episode. Sir Lavabo was probably just sticking with the rules when he says "I'll get back to you within 48 hours" considering that he has enough information when she says "it's right behind you" and he returns a few seconds later. A few seconds is technically "within 48 hours," after all. I have this feeling the "Goodbye forever, Star," line exists for the sole reason of putting it in a promo to tease the fans. I'm not sure if they did, but they certainly could've.

Episode 0305b: Rest in Pudding

As the kingdom mourns the death of Lekmet, Star finds herself haunted by another casualty of the Battle for Mewni.

Fun facts: This is our first confirmation that the remaining members of the Magic High Commission are now alive and well. Tigerfish are basically an African version of piranha, except they can grow even bigger. Nobody believes Star is really seeing Glossaryck because everyone else thinks he's as dead as Lekmet instead of hanging out in a black void. Butterfly Castle and Los Angeles appear to be in different time zones. Janna's book is the same one from "Naysaya." Star must've gone back for more goblin dogs, because Kelly got the baseball cap in the "Goblin Dogs" episode and hers was white instead of the pink one in Star's closet. You can see Li'l Chauncy's grave (along with those of other royal pets) in the cemetery scene. Janna said to bury it "real deep," Star, not just four inches down. The jump scares are accompanied by hammering on Glossaryck's sitar. Marco and Jackie must have just sat down, because Janna says Star's name during both conversations. The Glossaryck carved into the Wellspring appears to have a mustache and not just our Glossaryck's beard. Star kicks down two doors in this episode.

Food for thought: That slow zooming shot of the organist that lingers just a second too long is a thing of beauty. Apparently Star had a private bathroom in her room this whole time but chose to use the shared bathroom while she lived with Marco. Both of Star vs's spooky episodes have a theme of splashy puddles, although this time it's not saliva. Go figure that Star's expert on dark magic and spirits would be a girl from the non-magical realm of Earth. We knew Glossaryck wasn't really dead and wouldn't stay gone just from "Toffee," but at the same time it's better to have permanent consequences and not negate Star's emotional journey by making it pointless. Fortunately, the show manages to find a compromise.

Episode 0306a: Club Snubbed

Star attends the Silver Bell Ball, an annual dance celebrating the peace between the allied nations of the Butterflys, the Johansens, the Pigeons, the Pony Heads, the Demons, the Waterfolk, the Forest of Unlikely Spider Bites, and the Jaggy Mountains. All eight kingdom heirs all dance together as part of the ball, but it seems at least one royal scion is having trouble letting go of the past.

Fun facts: Official (re?)launch of the Stom/Tomstar ship. All the nations present are on the map that comes with the guidebook, although the Forest of Unlikely Spider Bites and the Jaggy Mountains don't seem to have full kingdom status. Tom's last name, Lucitor, is in the guidebook, but this is the first time someone says it in the show. The boys and girls line up on either side of the ballroom, but from what we see all the heirs dance together and not just every boy and girl pairing. Pony Head's "club snub record" includes one of the musicians.

Food for thought: Why does the Silver Bell Ball use a golden bell? Several of the races present seem rather monstrous (the Jaggs and Lady Wrathmelior come to mind), but we don't see any proper Monsters. Presumably "Monsters" refers specifically to the race or races displaced by Mewmans (recall "Mewnipendence Day"), and they very specifically aren't a part of this eight-nation coalition. If King River didn't think Star was dating yet ("Camping Trip"), you have to wonder what he considered Tom and Star's relationship pre-breakup. This episode is worth watching twice if only to put Tom's actions in context. Cloudy appears to have powered up along with Star's wand.

Episode 0306b: Stranger Danger

Star is having trouble handling the mentally reduced Glossaryck, but the nice lady who helps her in the Rose Garden turns out to be none other than Queen Eclipsa. The Magic High Commission quickly recapture her, but Star has experienced the American legal system and wonders whether Eclipsa deserves a summary recrystallization.

Fun facts: Glossaryck's harness includes a pink teddy bear for some reason. Seems like unicorn horns can grow out of anything on Mewni. The Rose Garden's doors and windows are spades, but then most of the castle windows are spade-shaped. Eclipsa wears her wedding band over her glove. It's only there for a second, but the anatomy diagram in the examination room looks distinctly cubist. The MHC put sensors on Star's cheek marks. Pescatarians are vegetarians who also eat seafood. The episode confirms that Moon having clean hands in "Mr. Candle Cares" is a mistake. Episode 0306 features zero Marco and I'm running out of ideas for how they're getting away with it. Well, fair's fair since Star never showed up during 0302.

Food for thought: When composer Brian H. Kim released the "Bad Book" theme that accompanies Eclipsa's chapter, tapestry, and purple spells, he called the melody important. However, that melody is distinct from every part of Eclipsa's theme. The fact that Moon never read Eclipsa's chapter gives new context to her dismay when she found out Star was about to read it. Moon of all people should know that using evil magic doesn't automatically make a person evil.

Episode 0307a: Demoncism

Sick and tired of his anger issues, Tom decides to undergo a demoncism, a radical procedure that could leave him without a personality. Not wanting this to happen, Star attempts to intervene.

Fun facts: Seahorse is probably from the Waterfolk Kingdom. One of the posters in Seahorse's video is "Spice Boyz." The customer is the fur coat skeleton from "Goblin Dogs." The Reflecticore Mobile office has a dot matrix printer from the 90s. The head cultist's book is titled "An Exercise in Demoncism," presumably because "Exorcise" would be too easy.

Food for thought: Back in season one, Star said, "Yeah, crush that wood! Wood's the worst!" Evidently she shares that with Pony Head. The stuff in the cauldron looks an awful lot like the revitalized magic essence in the Sanctuary Wellspring.

Episode 0307b: Sophomore Slump

Marco's body may have returned to Earth, but his head is still in Mewni. Even as summer comes to an end, he refuses to stop talking about it or stop wearing his cape, and it's driving a wedge between him and his friends.

Fun facts: Alfonso and Fergusen haven't spoken since season one, and I think Alfonso's VA is rusty. Janna doesn't look at the dice after the first roll. Turns out the "Sensei Only" door doesn't lead to an office, it's just the dojo's back door. Jackie has a Spice Boyz poster in her room, and her other posters are also references. Marco's weird clothing layers make more sense once you know how many layers he's wearing. Marco remains terrible at guessing what's on Jackie's mind. The hot-dog seller and joggers from the park are now on the pier, Jeremy's parents are eating in the fancy restaurant, and just about all the other background characters come from older episodes. A heavyset Ariel with Flounder is a painting on the wall of the restaurant. She's very nice about how she puts it, but Jackie-Lynn totally gives Marco an ultimatum at the end. And Marco's response, though unwitting, is his answer.

Food for thought: Here's yet another parallel as both Star and Marco obsess over an article of clothing that represents each other. They also both start their episodes eating Cornritos. People who wonder why Marco would let his Mewni obsession ruin his social life are forgetting that his obsessive personality is his main character flaw. Remember, Marco started the show as the Safe Kid who let his obsession with safety ruin his social life. It also relates to Marco's self-worth issues, and this episode kicks off his season-long character arc of learning to value himself without external validation. Jackie continues her oceanic theme in this episode, but as always it's not clear if it means something or if it's just her personal preference. They really should have pulled the rubber bands off the lobster before throwing it into the sea. Marco hugged Star all the time, but the pier is the first time Marco hugs Jackie. You know things are getting crazy when someone like Rafael Diaz starts worrying.

Episode 0308a: Lint Catcher

When Marco returns to Mewni without so much as calling ahead, Star and her parents aren't sure how to react or what to do with their unexpected visitor.

Fun facts: Note how Star is in the middle of a two-player game when Marco shows up. Marco didn't do anything that actually mattered during the Battle for Mewni, so nobody outside the royal family and the three artists know or care about him aside from maybe remembering "Oh, he's Star's boyfriend from that song." If what Eclipsa and Sir Lavabo say don't match up, remember that Eclipsa's information is several hundred years out of date. The stained-glass window in "Scent of a Hoodie" showed Knights of the Wash with full beards, so presumably full knights transfer in rather than training up from squires. Marco loses the cape soon after he finds out what it means. There are six puppies, so Star probably left the seventh with Marco's parents. This is the first time the show has said Marco's middle name, Ubaldo, but it's in the guidebook. Marco doesn't like it since it's an awkward name and it means his initials are MUD.

Food for thought: Marco deserves everything that happens to him in this episode and more for his presumptions and his puffed-up self-importance. But in a broader sense, Star deserves to have Marco do this to her since she did basically the same thing to him in "Star Comes to Earth." Sir Poplockandropeth probably died during the Battle for Mewni. Marco seems almost surprised by how ready he is to accept Star's final offer.

Episode 0308b: Trial by Squire

Quest Buy is holding its annual Squire Blowout Sale, and Marco is as obsessed as ever; this time with being the best squire he can be. But what do the other squires think about that? Higgs is voiced by Lauren Lapkus, who's played characters like Vivian in Jurassic World and Patience St. Pim in Adventure Time.

Fun facts: Marco is using his dimensional scissors to cut coupons. Watch Higgs' eyes during her introduction to see what she's thinking. The reason Star lets the other squires win despite their tactics is because she doesn't care about any of the merchandise. By the end of the episode Star and Marco are back in sync, symbolized both by their simultaneous speech and their theme instruments playing a duet in the background music. No, you're not crazy, that is Shmebulock and Jeff.

Food for thought: Some crazy stuff has happened with Star's eyes over the past two seasons, but this is the first time something other than shine spots have appeared in Marco's. Higgs gives Marco some genuinely good advice at the start; it's just a shame it takes him most of the episode to understand it. I doubt it was hard for the other squires to guess which cart-horse Star would want. Throughout the episode, Marco is always right; the problem is with his priorities. Thematically, this episode has a lot in common with "Game of Flags."

Episode 0309a: Princess Turdina

Marco is getting an honorary degree from St. Olga's for inspiring their revolt, but he's worried about just how much of his true self he should reveal to the princesses who idolize him. Comedian Nicole Byer plays Princess Arms, the four-armed princess who leads the tour. She's also the voice of Princess Jaggs.

Fun facts: Marco's makeover appears to be a low-key version of Star and Pony Head's makeovers in "Pizza Thing." And it lasts about as long. The guidebook says Pony Head was the leader at St. Olga's for a while but they removed her when they decided they wanted to actually learn things and clean up the trash, but apparently that's all non-canon now. Every princess from the Silver Bell Ball goes to St. Olga's except Star. We first saw Rodrigo during "Page Turner," but he was smaller at the time. Princess Smooshy was named in the credits for "Sleep Spells," but this is the first time someone's said her name in an episode.

Food for thought: Star said everything was pulled by giant invisible goats back in "Star on Wheels," but she probably only meant royal coaches and the like since she wouldn't have thought about how the lower classes gets around. This time the thematic parallel is closest to "Starstruck." I wonder what Gemini thinks of Princess Marco after this episode? The machine at the end has reappeared since this episode, but it's still unclear what it sucks up.

Episode 0309b: Starfari

A chance encounter at the market leads Star to confront her mother about the arbitrary Mewnian views on Monsters. When she doesn't get the answer she wants, Star then turns to the Royal Monster Expert. Dr. Jelly Goodwell (do I even need to say she's a pastiche of Dr. Jane Goodall?) is voiced by Carol Kane, an actor with a long Hollywood career whom you might recognize as Miracle Max's wife Valerie in The Princess Bride or Granny in Addams Family Values.

Fun facts: The monster at the market and Tom have very similar horns. When Star kicks open Moon's door (again), Moon is hard at work building a case against Eclipsa. Between what Moon and Jelly say it's clear that monster discrimination is a classic case of passing the buck. "Dam of Constant Sorrow" is a stealth pun of "Man of Constant Sorrow," so someone on the staff is a fan of Oh Brother, Where Art Thou? Three-eyed Potato Baby has a visible role in this episode and many of Ludo's other former minions appear in the crowd shots, so the show has finally confirmed that most (if not all) of them got out before Castle Avarius exploded. Many of the Alternative Monsters from "Raid the Cave" have also resettled in the village.

Food for thought: Goodwell's opinion of monsters--and just wait till you hear the whole thing--was a real point of view regarding "primitive races" once upon a time. What possessed Jelly to set a second round of explosives?

Episode 0310a: Sweet Dreams

Star's recurring dreams of flying and eating turn out to be surprisingly literal, and she and Marco have to figure out what to do about them. They also need to decide whose advice they ought to follow.

Fun facts: It takes real talent to fall asleep on a stool without falling over. Apparently that transformation includes a costume change because Star was in her nightgown before but not afterwards. Star's evening meal is cake. King River is joking, but in Star's defense he has a terrible sense of humor. The flash of light got rid of the chain somehow. The last time the captain portrait played a role in the show was "Blood Moon Ball."

Food for thought: Star's dreams of flying and binge eating may signify that she wants to be free of her current life situation and is looking for something to comfort her. This interpretation seems to bear out as this plotline develops. Note that Star is willing to share her personal problems with Marco but not with Tom. I presume Star compensated Roy for the food truck since she's royalty. All things considered, it makes perfect sense that "All knowledge is good knowledge" would be her motto. And if she can leave whenever she wants, why is she sticking around?

Episode 0310b: Lava Lake Beach

Star, Marco, Tom, and Kelly gather on an Underworld beach to watch the annual soulrise. But while Star and Tom are having a great night, Kelly and Marco may both be going through some issues.

Fun facts: Official launch of the Marckelly/Kellyco ship. The giant dog monster Jorby was last seen in "Starcrushed," but he only gets a name in this episode. According to one of the Live Chats, Marco's birthday falls on November 28, so he's been living with Star for about three months. The pizza delivery dog is the one freed from Rhombulus' crystal. Tad is a vegan, so naturally he's eating Vegan Pizza. Based on his expressions, Marco has been denying the big reveal to himself for some time now. "They haven't earned it," Kelly says, speaking about two people who have dealt with some serious heartbreak.

Food for thought: Why exactly did Star dress her boyfriend up in one of Marco's iconic hoodies? For the beach? I have to wonder what would happen if Kelly and the crazy hair lady from "Star vs Echo Creek" ever met. Do I even need to say which second season episode this one mirrors? I'll give you a hint: it's the only other episode to feature a 60s-style rock song sung by composer Brian H. Kim. Speaking of, the song gives me a very strong "Happy Together" vibe, but I have no idea if that's intentional. Did the background artist put an extra ladder in by accident, or is the secret ladder the only way to the top level?

Episode 0311a: Death Peck

Star, Marco, and Pony Head have been going around to the eight allied kingdoms to gather signatures on a petition for the fair treatment of Monsters, and Pigeon Kingdom is their last stop. But when Marco commits a major faux pas, the situation quickly deteriorates. Rich Pigeon's cooing is supplied by Gary Anthony Williams, whom you might recognize as Tygan from XCOM 2, Uncle Ruckus from The Boondocks, or Clarence Bell on Boston Legal.

Fun facts: You can see on the petition that Princess Jaggs' name is Jaggy Jaggy and Pony Head's first name is Lilacia. Her first name first appeared in the guidebook, though. Marco might have been right about bird vision, but then he moved. "Yelling feels good right now!" was first shouted by Rhombulus in "Moon the Undaunted." The suitcase's combination is 678. Watch Pony Head's expressions during Rich Pigeon's speech.

Food for thought: How much space does Pony Head have up there? Sounds like Pony Head fell in love with pizza after Marco introduced her to it in "Pizza Thing."

Episode 0311b: Ponymonium

Star goes to visit Pony Head at her place, but things quickly get out of hand thanks to her many, many sisters.

Fun facts: Star's outfit in this episode is the winner of a fan art contest. According to the guidebook, Pony Head has 12 sisters because the kingdom is normally patrilineal and King Pony Head has been trying for a son for years. But now that he has 13 daughters, he's given up. One sister, Chezna, doesn't appear in the episode, probably because she's the sister who filed down her horn and got a horse body implant. According to the guidebook, Teta has been apparently missing for some time, although she always makes it to school somehow. It also mentions that Azniss is the second-born. Pony Head hates paintings, but the posters in her room are apparently fine. Teta has a California citizen ID.

Food for thought: Cloudy must be made out of the kind of clouds the Pony Heads live in. Pony Head must have shared her new love of pizza with her family, because there are several slices in their food troughs. Pony Head is uncharacteristically closed off to Star in this episode, but we learn why by the end. If this happens every meal, that would explain a lot about King Pony Head's whole deal.

Episode 0312a: Nightlife

Marco has recently been spending his nights with Heckapoo, closing portals to prevent the wrong things from passing through. But Marco can't keep this double life up forever, especially when he's lying to both the ladies involved.

Fun facts: Apparently Heckapoo's home dimension is X-103. This is the first time we've seen the Dimension of Cats with Human Faces since "Freeze Day," but they also showed up in one of the comics. The last sighting of the Sea Bunnies was much more recent thanks to "The Bounce Lounge," and it looks like their captain has recovered from being turned into a carrot and mostly eaten. Talon Raventalon's dragoncycle has the number 113 and its own sunglasses.

Food for thought: The two-timing subtext is strong in this episode. But while he obviously has a selfish interest in dragoncycling, it becomes clear by the end that Marco has always been looking out for Star.

Episode 0312b: Deep Dive

0312 turns out to be a stealth two-parter, because part b takes place the night after "Nightlife" ends. Star brings Janna to Mewni to help her reach the place she's been seeking in her dreams, but after that happens Marco panics and does something crazy.

Fun facts: Pay attention to Star's eyes after she reaches her destination. Star's favorite color is yellow, and Marco's favorite is red. Incidentally, while Star used red-colored magic once or twice in season two, it's hard to say what its emotional or magical affinity is. The "Bad Book" theme shows up again in this episode. Pay attention to Marco's cheeks and remember that what he says about souls is a reference to "Blood Moon Ball." This is the first time Marco and Star have really hugged since he left in "Scent of a Hoodie."

Food for thought: This episode manages to parallel "Baby" and "Running with Scissors" considering what the two protagonists go through. The new wand design has a distinctly monsterous appearance, but it looks more like Lobster Claw's good wand than his evil one.

Episode 0313: Monster Bash

To celebrate her petition's success and help bring Mewmans and Monsters together, Star holds a party in a creepy old temple Rich Pigeon found and invites the youth of every race. Things start out tense, but then people cut loose, and then things go really bad.

Fun facts: Star's party outfit is the same thing she wore on Song Day, showing that she's hosting the party officially as princess. For his part, Marco is wearing his "Bon Bon the Birthday Clown" suit right down to the light-blue tie. Rich does a good impression of the drinking bird toy. When Pony Head arrives, she brings the rest of the Bounce Crew with her; Headphone Jones is already helping the DJ. Several of the Alternative Monsters have been recast, the most obvious being the hairy tusk monster who had Greg Cipes' voice in "Raid the Cave." Headphone Jones doesn't look happy when Star stretches him to listen to the beats. Between this and "Demoncism," it seems Pony Head's best skill is being a distraction. The ancient temple has an old tapestry with the card suits on it. You can guess who's camping by looking at the reading material and remembering who the person is a parody of. This episode pays off that half-second cameo in "Book Be Gone." You can see the big reveal painting in the first panning shot of the room. Marco first threw books in "Sleep Spells." Despite all the episodes the monster temple has been in, no one ever told Star about its existence.

Food for thought: Does Roy bring his long-line trial BS when he caters parties, or does he only cater for people who pass his trial? I fully approve of Heinous' taste in music. Star and Tom seem to be having trouble with their relationship, and not just because they have a fight in this episode. There's also the fact that Star forgot her boyfriend was helping with the decorations, plus she didn't realize he wanted a kiss until he said so. And she gives him some juvenile kisses that probably resemble what they did when they were preteens. Did Eclipsa spread the Sword Hand Dance, or is that just something the youth picked up independently thanks to Marco's karate antics? Considering his nervous reactions, it's possible that Gemini knew the truth all along. Star probably could've used her Butterfly form during the final battle, but the fight got interrupted before she was pressed hard enough to use it.

Episode 0314a: Stump Day

It's Stump Day, a Christmas and Thanksgiving-like winter holiday Mewmans look forward to all year round. But Stump Day also happens to be Star's birthday, and so Marco has some extra celebrations in store.

Fun facts: One of the initials on the stump could be "RG Butterfly," and SJP might be for "Ponyhead," but none of the rest match up with the other allied kingdoms. The extended Butterfly-Johansen families have come together for the Stump Day celebration. Along with his own birthday, Marco mentions in a Live Chat that Star's birthday falls on Stump Day but that he otherwise has no idea what that is. "We never celebrate my birthday on my actual birthday" would explain why it wasn't snowing back in "Star Comes to Earth." The mariachi asks, "What's a Stump Day?" and Star responds, "It's a very important day!"

Food for thought: Based on the Stump's timing, it seems less concerned with friendship and more with its idol burning. This also helps explain the fact that the Stump appears so rarely that most people don't think it's real; relationship problems happen every day but desecrating idols is less common.

Episode 0314b: Holiday Spellcial

While Star and Marco celebrate Stump Day in Mewni, Star's spells hold an office party with Spider with a Top Hat as the party planner. But there's a new spell in the wand who's having a hard time getting along with its coworkers.

Fun facts: Apparently Spider's gloves aren't oven-rated. The raccoon by the sink is Rainbow Racoon Rotation from "Freeze Day." Looks like Cloudy is a part of the wand staff after all, and now so is Kitten Pegasus Battle Barrel from "Scent of a Hoodie." Seeing Eye Spell's sense of "truth" was probably influenced by the kinds of things its masters would use it for. Seeing Eye only shows its recordings to comment on what other people say. You can tell Spider got through to Seeing Eye because it has eye shines during its final footage montage.

Food for thought: Between the episode's two parts, 0314 is clearly a mirror for 0211, another out-of-timeline holiday episode with a look at Star's spell list. I like how every time someone sings a Stump Day carol it's different. It helps makes the holiday feel like Christmas with its massive list of caroling classics. Using a plunger on a "chocolate fountain" feels dirty somehow. Seeing Eye's recorded footage implies Star was watching Marco even after he left for Earth. I cringe when I see the warnicorn hug the giant eyeball.

Hah, I was wondering if you were going to continue those. Season 3A definitely had some great episodes, especially Deep Dive, and it's been neat to see how the show's tackled plunging into full-on serialization. You have any particular favorites of the batch?

Also, Daron Nefcy did an interview for the first issue of the animation guild's new magazine, where she talked about the process she went through of pitching Star to the networks.

The usual suspects for the most part. 12, 10, 7, 13, and 6 in that order. However, I think I'd also rate 8 higher 6 because I like how it shows Star and Marco reconnecting and building a new relationship.

First things first, we've got a new episode poster from boarder Ariel V. H:

Second, as of now the new episode is up on On Demand! :toot: Both are pretty good, especially Total Eclipsa the Moon-Eclipsa and Moon make for a good adventuring pair, and it was neat to see Moon get past her initial distrust of Eclipsa through a shared concern over children, the same way she overcame her prejudice against Buff Frog.

I'll probably post some other thoughts after I get some sleep, but for now I'll dump the episode synopses for next week:

Butterfly Trap
Moon and the Magical High Commission put Eclipsa on trial for her evil past with Star as a key witness.

Ludo, Where Art Thou?
Dennis goes on a dangerous journey to find Ludo living in another dimension.

On the final tag: YAY DENNIS! :neckbeard:

If Festivia was from a cadet branch of the Butterfly family you'd expect Eclipsa would at least recognize her name or face. The plot thickens.

Also, Star's Bog Beast outfit is pretty awesome.

In the guidebook, Festivia's rhyme is

When the threat of monsters at the gate
has darkened out the sun,
let the kingdom find some peace and joy
in Festivia the Fun.

Star's commentary describes her reign as a time of war and says Festivia did her best to keep morale up inside the walls.

Edit: Wait a second. I can't believe I only just noticed. Festivia is the only Butterfly queen to have a non-celestial name.

Just stopping by to say: Eclipsa is the best character.

Rewatching Moon the Undaunted, it's uncanny how similar young Moon and Star are. She went off on her own to see Eclipsa, gently caress what anyone else thinks. She even called off Rhombulus when he froze her again without warning. Even faced off with Toffee on her own when everyone else was against it. So it's not a surprise she's sneaking past the Magic High Commission now.

A few interesting things from Eclipsa from the latest eps:

She never learned how to use magic without her wand. That's interesting, as the thought-by-Moon-to-be arc villain, and as a new character normally they are increasingly powerful to keep up with the ongoing conflict, eg everyone in DBZ and their mother going Super Saiyan.

Also, I love how she didn't care about her trial when it was just her rear end on the line, she can handle that. Now that she knows that her daughter may be/have been in danger though, now she's finally showing concern. I loved that small moment of "They erased my daughter... and I'm the one on trial?... :("

Another episode poster! This one is from Nicolette Wood:

Anyway, episode thoughts:

Bogbeast: This was an interesting one. Star's impulsiveness and habit of rushing into dangerous situations without thinking them through has been a hallmark of her character throughout the series, and an episode where she's forced to confront that has been a long time coming. For the most part, I think they pulled it off well-framing it as an old-fashioned coming-of-age ritual allowed them to shed a bit of light on Mewman culture, and gave River an opportunity to be ludicrous not just for the sake of being ludicrous (As he's typically portrayed) but as part of an active effort to push Star into learning an actual lesson.

Also, Star's huntress outfit was badass, and "It's breaking my beautiful mind" was a goddamn inspired line.

Total Eclipsa the Moon: A great episode. Both Moon and Eclipsa are great characters, and putting them an entire episode together allowed them both to shine. It also raised a ton of questions about Eclipsa's past and the role of the Magical High Commission, which is doubtlessly going to lead to some real revelations during the trial episode. (Also it's a good thing it's next week because man I can't wait to see more of Eclipsa, and for the show to finally delve into her real history and motivations.)

Something about Moon the Undaunted that just struck me is that when Eclipsa first appeared, she appeared as an older wiser figure to the teenaged Moon. But now that they’re both adults, Eclipsa appears much more impulsive and childish in comparison. Given that Eclipsa was frozen when Meteora was a baby, and Moon's the mother of a teenager, it’s actually pretty likely that Moon is now physically and emotionally older than Eclipsa, and if anything Eclipsa may be closer in age to Star than to Moon.

At this point, the sense I get from Eclipsa is that she's almost a reflection of Star and Moon's worst tendencies. Like Star, she's impulsive and has moments of immaturity and childishness, and like Moon she's manipulative and controlling. Now at this point that doesn't mean she's a bad person, but she's certainly a self-centered one-and if anything, serves as an example of what Star may have grown up to be had she not been forced to improve as a person through her encounters with Toffee, her contentious relationship with Moon, and her friendship with Marco. Not being able to cast wandless magic could be seen as an extension of that, as it's reminiscent of Star's older tendencies to cut corners, procrastinate, and rely on her raw magical talent, as opposed to actually digging in and doing the work.

"All knowledge is good knowledge" combined with her impulsive streak. She noticed there wasn't much black/purple magic in the spellbook so she took it upon herself to do some research. Her arms would have blackened from the practice even if she never harmed another living soul. That said, she still could have hurt others, especially if she fought against the Magic High Commission before they crystallized her, but as of right now she still has reasonable doubt in her favor.

By the way, has anyone else noticed Eclipsa's love of poetry? All her spells are poems and she came up with a poem to use as a mnemonic. Combined with her guitar skills she'd make one hell of a goth metal band leader.

So if Festivia's an outside pretender, wouldn't that make every queen after her (including Moon) illegitimate? And with Meteora still alive, wouldn't that make her the legal queen of Mewni? At any rate, it looks like poo poo's about to get real

Kinda complicates things that Star and Moon have the facial markings and magical abilities that seem expected of the Butterfly line... though Eclipsa doesn't seem to have an equivalent of the latter, admitting she never learned to use magic without the wand. Of course, we've seen Marco briefly have crescent-moon markings as well, and Star is far from the first magical outsider to come to Earth...

I think my personal favourite line in Total Eclipsa the Moon was this little exchange:

Moon: How is that possible?
Eclipsa: Well, when a queen of Mewni and a monster love each other very much...

I still don't trust Eclipsa. She may not be a cackling villain, but she's up to something.

She casually strolls into Mewni castle, smelling roses and eating snickers. When attacked by the entire high commission, she doesn't defend herself, doesn't freak out, she's just calmly smiling. That's shady as gently caress.

Also, with multiple people she's acting in different ways in a manner that seems almost designed to win their trust. With Star, she's the cool grandma that lets her do what she wants and encourages her to be free and explore, in a way her parents never let her. With Moon, she's playing up how much she misses her daughter, to gain her sympathy as a fellow mother. And she was gone a really long time when Moon was stuck, the door and the hole were right next to each other .

Interesting little bit; Moon seems surprised that Rhombulus arrived to break up Star's party, and didn't send him, and it doesn't sound like she's lying. Meaning somebody else called down the authorities to ruin Star's attempt at starting to reconcile centuries of hatred.

He only showed up when the door to Meteora's nursery opened, and that was obviously magical. I don't think anyone called him, I think opening the door just set of an alarm of some kind .

I'm kind of hoping we see Eclipsa make a new spell at some point - during a fight of some kind, things aren't going her way and she starts a new recitation out of desperation to, I don't know, calm Meteora before she hurts someone or something. You just know that she was in a bad place when she made the spell to kill the unkillable. Whoever she designed that spell for must have really pissed her off.

Eclipsa at least could have made things harder for them by not strolling into the seat of their power, and she can clearly sneak out whenever she wants but hasn't yet. Based on who comes up with each idea and how I don't think Eclipsa is manipulating things the way Toffee did, but she does seem willing to take advantage when the situation presents itself and she must want something from Butterfly Castle other than recrystallization. The only question is what.

Hell, until just this episode she thought the Butterfly queens were direct descendants of her only daughter.

Presuming Meteora is her only daughter. If King Shastacan was her Mewni husband, then Eclipsa has another kid and things get significantly hairier.

Everyone is harping on Eclipsa and Star's selfishness, but Moon isn't innocent of that herself - she has had her own disasters, like due to failing to kill Toffee when Star's age, deliberately sparing him so Eclipsa wouldn't be freed, she left him alive. Then, 30 years later he kills Lekmet, which IMO is largely due to Moon's failure to kill him so that she wouldn't have to deal with people knowing she went to Eclipsa for help.
