How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Nexus: The Jupiter Incident is a tactical space strategy game developed by Mithis Interactive, initially intended to be Imperium Galactica 3. This fell through when the developers lost the license to Imperium Galactica, and so the game was moved onto a studio named Philos Laboratories and the game named Galaxy Andromeda. Then, it was shunted to Mithis, who later went on to make Battlestations Midway after being acquired in 2006 by Eidos Interactive and having their name changed to Eidos Hungary.

In 2010, Square Enix closed Eidos Hungary since they didn't feel more games in the Battlestations series would be successful after the lacklustre performance of Battlestations Pacific. The team went on to form Most Wanted Entertainment, who proceeded to launch a crowdfunding campaign in 2011 on GamesPlant?, earning €104,867 in pledges, falling short of their €400,000 goal. Following this failure, the game was re-released on GOG. The game was also available on Steam, as it has been for many years. Most Wanted didn't give up, hoping that after the GOG release interest in the game would have been revitalised, launching a second campaign this time on Kickstarter for Nexus 2: The Gods Awaken. They were correct as well, as Nexus 2 raised $161,731. Unfortunately, their goal was $650,000.

Then, out of nowhere, Nordic Games (now THQ Nordic), built from the ashes of JoWooD (Spellforce, Silent Storm), Dreamcatcher (Painkiller, The Guild 2), THQ (Darksiders) Digital Reality (Imperium Galactica, Haegemonia) and NovaLogic (Delta Force, Comanche), acquires the rights to Nexus in 2015 and push out an update to the Steam version of the game in March 2016, introducing widescreen support and Steam Workshop support the two most major enhancements.

The game itself is a scenario based fleet tactics game, with opportunities for ship customisation in between missions. It also features a comprehensive order system and enough depth under the hood to effectively simulate any science fiction fantasy you may have in a copyright free environment. Then you can try out the Star Wars mod if you're a filthy casual while true connoisseurs enjoy the Battlestar Galactica mod. Just kidding, they're playing the Babylon 5 mod. No other game comes quite as close in replicating such experiences.

The world of Nexus is one dominated by mega-corporations after an age of booming colonisation, where our protagonist, Marcus Cromwell, took part in the war that saw the decline of the central governing body, the ISA. Many years after that, he is now in the employ of one of those corporations: Spacetech, sent on a mission to the Jupiter Sector.

Spacetech: We work for them right now. A private company. They own Michelangelo Station.

Kissaki Syndicate: Way ahead in shipping related technology, own several patents and dominate 28.4% market share. They have a base in Jupiter, Shukenja Station and a battleship: The Kensai.

International Space Agency (ISA): The closest thing to a stellar government, now thoroughly defanged. Military organisation is called the Confederate Fleet. They have a military base in Jupiter, Kepler Station.

OSEC: A leading research corporation. First colonists on Mars. Have a base in Jupiter, Valiant Base.

Orbital Investment: The first space corporation. Not OSEC. Have a research base in Jupiter, Volcano Station.

Aerospace: Spacetech don't like them. Along with OSEC and Orbital Limited took part in the Battle of Phobos.

Noah Defence Force: The military arm of the colonists of the Noah Sector. Have served for over half a century as mercenaries to the Vardrags against the Gorn.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Marcus Cromwell, Captain.

In military history books he was remembered as an exceptional officer, a brilliant strategist, a charismatic warrior with an unshakeable character, and a general in one of humankind's most momentous battles. His portrait hung on the walls of government offices; he was talked about in every military and space academy throughout the world... his legend became common currency in the world of holo-movies... he became an idol to millions.

Who was he in reality? Just a man, handed an almost messianic role by fate. He was born in 2067 in England. In 2077, his father sailed away with Noah's Ark, only to vanish into the depths of space, presumed dead. Marcus never saw him again, but inherited his father's dreams and his yearning to explore the infinity of space.

Marcus graduated from the academy in 2086. Earth was headed towards its first space war; freshly graduated officers were thrown into fierce clashes. Marcus soon got his own taste of war. His ship was shot down near Phobos in 2098. He was rescued and reanimated ten years later. In 2112, he left for Jupiter aboard the Stiletto... and embarked upon a journey towards immortality.

Officer, Lieutenant.

Respectful family background, good schools and good grades. A career that ascended smoothly, and plateaued at Flag-Lieutenant. As his former boss put it: "Oh, that boy Nigel? Born to become a Flag-Lieutenant. He's like an old cargo freighter - sure, steady, reliable... just don't expect mind-blowing performance!"

Rudolf Veltman, Commander.

This professor of German origin has filled volumes with his works and theories. He received the Nobel prize for physics, aged 25, in recognition of his achievements in Quantum Physics. After that, he became Professor of Honour at multiple universities, and became the lead scientist of the Motyan Institute for Astro Research. Later, he became interested in AI-Psychology and he worked on ISA Space-Traffic Control AI. Few people know that he also published profound philosophical essays, in which he examined the problems and opportunities of the expected evolution of humankind.

He retreated from the limelight eight years ago, ostensibly to start his own private research. In reality, he had accepted an offer from Spacetech and joined the corporation. He quit publishing from that point on; only a few people know that he is working on new spacecraft propulsion methods. His career almost collapsed after a failed experiment resulted in four deaths. After his recouperation, he accepted a job as a researcher aboard the Sunflower base.

Xiao Lee, Commander.

Her parents died while they were repairing the docks of the Kelvin base orbiting Earth. She was brought up by her aunt, in accordance with Confucian tradition. Her aunt tried to keep her away from spaceshipping, hoping to grant her a safer life. But all her restrictions and punishments did not work and Xiao finally ended up at the Academy, where she excelled. She became an outstanding strategist and a tough officer; there is a small shrine in her cabin, where she lights some incense in front of a small buddha sculpture.

Francis Delorain, Captain.

'He was a smart, brisk child. His eyes betrayed a wisdom far beyond his years... despite all that precocious knowledge, he always kept clowning around and laughing... it was pure joy to be in his company. Such sensitivity meant that life's hardships struck him particularly heavily... he often needed my support.

Later we lost contact... his parents opposed the Noah plan, and our fathers had fierce quarrels over the project, until our two families stopped talking with each other. We crossed paths in cadet school, and we were soon back to our old tricks. My father was long gone by that time, considered dead... as was I, just a few years later... we graduated from the academy together and fought side by side in the Confederate Fleet... I was left for dead near Phobos...

Many years have gone by; we've changed, as has the world. As far as I am concerned, Francis still embodies the carelessness and joy of my childhood.' (Marcus Cromwell)

Angel

Tenshi, or Angel in English, is the lead scientist of the Kissaki Shukenja Beta station. It is a fourth generation self-upgrading Artificial Intelligence with a personality, and as such is completely illegal.

The incident at the Shukenja Base seems to have left her shaken, but Professor Veltman insists that this is a common reaction of AIs who fail to protect the humans under their care. She is currently living in the Angelwing, which was named after her by the Kissaki scientists.

Sweetwater, Commander.

Dream... pulsating life everywhere in the whirling mist... emotions and thoughts... wisdom, carefulness, curiosity... and fear. Chemicals running through my veins, slowly, yet impatiently growing organs deep down between my very own cells... passing and resurrection... the gate of wisdom and death.... the infinite space... alien cells, alien thoughts, alien desires... they touch me, grasp me, inspect and transform me... a past falling into the distance... fading memories... calming swell... tranquillity... solitude...

She is our liason officer with the Ghosts. She is the only person from a human fleet who has been granted permission to meet the Ghosts face-to-face. Why the Ghosts chose her is almost as much of a mystery as the Ghosts themselves.

Sweetwater is currently working on a human camouflage device project, based upon the principles of Ghost biotechnology. Her research is in its final phases now; this campaign will put it to the test. Disaster struck when the Poltergeist, a Destroyer equipped with the camouflage device, was damaged by a missile detonating in its vicinity. The crew was rescued and Commander Sweetwater was transferred to the Angelwing.

David Cole, Captain.

He did not talk until he was 5 years old. Examinations revealed no organic reason for his silence. He was considered autistic, mute, or possibly emotionally stunted.

He was a reserved, disciplined child, who had always demonstrated a serious interest in weapons. His father was a navy officer, and encouraged his child's fascination with technology, hoping to bring him out of his shell. His efforts bore fruit, he was talking on the telecom one day with a fellow officer about a weapon that is going to be introduced soon, when young David marched in and announced: 'Dad! The DK626 energy cells are too weak for the Diamond Spider! The neutron accelerators and thermo regulators sap a lot of energy, so you should use at least DK912 cells - my guess is they're going to settle with the new XL1000S.'

Eventually, David Cole became a navy officer. His crew learned to interpret his short orders and know only to ask him about weapons if they have at least ten minutes to listen to his answer.

Approx 4500 Years Ago - Thanks to the wormhole-network spanning the galaxy, the Vardrag Confederation is established and starts expanding.

Approx 3900 Years Ago - The Gorgs discover the space-net as well and start using it. They conquer lesser developed races one after another. The Gorg Empire is formed.

Approx 600 Years Ago - The Cardrag Confederation and the Gorg Empire meet. Although the Gorgs are technologically lesser developed, they still attack the Vardrags. After a few lost battles, the unified fleet of the Vardrag Confederation stops the Gorg advancement. A fragile peace treaty is signed; the Gorgs give up on their conquest of the Confederation.

1865 – Jules Verne writes his famous novel about travelling to the Moon.

1961 – The first man in space.

1969 – The first man on the moon.

1998 – The first module of the International Space Station is sent into orbit.

2010 – Internet2, the 2nd generation internet backbone, is established.

2013 – The first private space station is sent into orbit. The station was technically launched by an African country that did not sign the UNISPACE treaty – in reality it is owned by a giant corporation.

2018 – The first AI came into life.

2025 – The first orbital colony is opened.

2031 – The ISA (International Space Agency) builds the first Moon colony.

2033 – The first person outside of the Earth, Richard Cromwell, is born.

2034 – The liberalisation of spatial economic activities (mining, energy production, manufacturing) is enabled via the Zurich Orbital Convention.

2035 – The Douglas Case occurs, the first murder in space.

2035-2038 – The AI wars take place, and Internet2 collapses.

2038 – AI is banned. Internet3 is restructured.

2039 – The first company to be registered in space, Orbital Limited, is established.

2040 – The armed conflict between the world's leading private space research companies (Presumably OSEC and Orbital) takes place, remembered only as the Orbital War.

2043 – The Sector Earth (SE) Convention introduces the fleet quote within the inner regions of the Solar System and announces a ban on armament, while it excludes the outer Solar System from the effect of the UNISPACE treaties. The document is symbolically signed by the first person born in space, namely Richard Cromwell.

2054 – The 'top secret' corporate laboratories are built in the Kuiper-belt, conducting activites classified illegal on Earth. This is known as the “Kuiper Incident”.

2062 – OSEC establishes its first Mars colony, to be followed by the facilities of other leading space research enterprises.

16/06/2067 – Marcus Cromwell, the son of Richard Cromwell, is born on Earth.

03/09/2067 – Humankind discovers the first micro-wormhole in the vicinity of Mars, known as the “Mars Wormhole”. Humankind also discovers it is unimaginative.

01/03/2077 – The ISA forces a desperate attempt to lead space research, and it launches Noah's Ark through the wormhole, with 500 hibernated settlers and a million-unit gene pool on board. According to the analysts, the spectacular experiment is 50 years ahead of its time, and it ends up in an even more spectacular catastrophe.

07/10/2079 - First contact is formed between the Noah colonists and the Vardrag Empire.

01/04/2080 – To protect the integrity of Earth Sector, the ISA establishes its military organisation: the Confederate Fleet.

23/02/2082 - The Gorgs once again declare war on the Vardrags; they deal them a serious blow at the Battle of Scoratus.

01/05/2083 - The first Human-Gorg battle takes place, wherein Captain Norbank delivers a serious blow on the Gorgs, who were expecting a Vardrag fleet.

17/07/2086 – The Martian colonies declare their independence from Earth.

21/11/2090 – The Confederate Fleet begins an operation to eliminate illegal corporate activities: finally the unified fleet of Aerospace, OSEC and Orbital delivers a fatal blow to it next to Phobos.

2095-2100 – The Mars colonies of the rival companies trade nuclear strikes, which triggers the deadly Martian War.

03/09/2096 - The Kissaki Syndicate discovers the base of the "Creators" near Pluto. They suggest that the find is a gift from a friendly alien race, to help humankind reach the stars.

12/02/2098 – Marcus Cromwell is shot down near Phobos.

2105 – The Kissaki Syndicate patents revolutionary new devices used in space travel.

2107 – The Kissaki Syndicate improves its market share from 2.5% from four years ago, to 28% at present, thanks to its development of devices related to space shipping. They build their first battleship, the Kensai. The technological details of the vessel are classified; the Kensai is not introduced to the civilian market.

06/12/2108 – The rescue cabin of Marcus Cromwell is found and he is revived.

29/03/2102 - The Kissaki Syndicate starts its secret construction near Pluto.

03/09/2111 – Marcus Cromwell leaves for his new base in Sector Jupiter.

28/04/2112 - Marcus Cromwell, aboard the ST Stiletto, and Francis Delorain, aboard the FSF Hawking, arrives at the Spacetech Twin Stations: Michelangelo and Sunflower.

09/05/2112 - The ST Stiletto intercepts the KSK Ronin and its sister ship, the KSK Behiimosu The Angelwing.

14/05/2112 - The Kissaki Syndicate's Shukenja Base sends out an emergency signal. The ST Stiletto, FSF Hawking and OSF Invulnerable and Dangerous respond to the call. The Hawking is rendered unable to continue with operations, and the Invulnerable and Dangerous are destroyed. Unfortunately, the Stiletto arrives to find all staff dead and the station's AI, Tenshi, to be insane. Marcus Cromwell sends a prize crew to seize the Angelwing: an alien cruiser held by the Kissaki.

24/05/2112 - A reprisal raid is launched by the Kissaki forces against Sunflower station, objective: Take back the Angelwing. They are foiled by Cromwell's Stiletto, Commander Xiao Lee's Lightning, and Francis taking temporary command of the Madeline.

01/06/2112/b] - The Angelwing, now the personal flagship of Marcus Cromwell, infiltrates the Shukenja Beta station. The crew make contact with the AI, Angel, and an unidentified hostile mechanoid contact. With the help of Angel, the Angelwing jumps through a wormhole - Gate Alpha, leading to the Noah system.

20/06/2112 - Having made contact with the Noah Colonists, the Angelwing and its crew take part in a convoy escort mission to get the lay of the land. They are attacked by a Pirate Raptor group. The Fat Lady, a transport ship, was stolen by the pirates.

23/06/2112 - The Angelwing alongside two destroyers attempts to intercept the transport. The battle takes a turn for the worst, and the Angelwing is isolated and nearly destroyed. Thankfully, the battleship Rome commanded by Vice Rear Admiral Norbank.

14/07/2112 - The Angelwing investigates Earth, and find that it is held under the iron grip of The Mechanoid Entity, embodied by the Dark Moon. All hope lost with mechanoids descending upon her, the Angelwing attempts to flee. Angel somehow makes the mechanoid forces retreat, saving the Angelwing.

04/08/2112 - An attack is launched against the enclave of the Raptors. A heated battle ensues, with the battleships Rome and Athens being destroyed by special missiles. Marcus Cromwell takes charge of the fleet Unfortunately, Norbank survives the battle and receives a promotion alongside Cromwell.

04/09/2112 - Cromwell's new fleet, including the Brutus and Sparta commanded by Veltman and Francis respectively, defends the Colossus supply ship against a Gorg fleet.

06/09/2112 - The Cromwell fleet is sent to save a missing Ghost scout ship from a Gorg force. This earns them the respect
ire?
of the Ghosts, leading to Commander Sweetwater's appointment to the Cromwell fleet.

07/09/2112 - The Angelwing, equipped with Ghost stealth technology alongside the expertise of Commander Sweetwater, infilitrates and disables a Gorg installation, turning their defensive systems against their own fleet. A major Gorg force is slaughtered by this operation.

12/09/2112 - Titan, the Gorg frontier station, is assaulted by the Noah Fleet. Once the Angelwing disabled the IP Blocker of the station, the whole fleet began a major offensive. Vice Rear Admiral Norbank is rendered unconscious, and the fleet is once again commanded by Cromwell. Following this mission, Cromwell is promoted to the rank of Commodore and commands the high speed response force, the Angel Fleet, now equipped with the cruiser Avalanche.

02/10/2112 - Angel attempts interfacing with a mechanoid found in deep space, while the Angel Fleet holds off a Gorg force. The mechanoid is then activated, takes out the Gorg, and then leaves.

[b]05/10/2112
- The same mechanoid is tracked down, and is found to be deactivated by a strange biological entity: The Locust. Following a brief engagement, the Angelwing assimilates the mechanoid.

How did this smug dummkopf ever make general?

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 28/04/2112 posted:

Almost eight months... a long time, even though I prefer the quiet of deep space. The Mich is still a long ride... what? How?... No - I do not want automatic correction of language forms mismatching formal speech. Record it how I say it and don't interrupt me again!... Nothing worth the journey is nearby. Not until recently, at least... Nowadays there's quite a bustle around here... If the word around the campfire is true, the Megas have assembled serious muscle in the region. All of which means there's something out there - these guys aren't your regular hitchhikers. They're crowding round the Kissaki Syndicate... even I'm going to have to sniff around in the Kissaki's backyard...

I'm curious to see how soon they'll start trading blows... they say the atmosphere is more tense than the Mars-Earth jetball finals last year...

Naturally, I'm going to be right in the thick of it when the storm breaks out... I wonder what ridiculous name they're going to give this... something innocuous sounding, like... the Jupiter Incident.

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 09/05/2112 posted:

For long I thought this whole Kissaki case is stupid competition hysteria. The Japanese have invented some tricky procedure, they have unearthed some new metal or they have discovered the Philosopher's Stone, what do I know, and they phoned home, while the other megas fear that they are going to tail off. I was not really interested in the whole thing. But this new ship, we have found... that is something! I am starting to think I was extremely lucky to be involved in this whole case.

The ship is beautiful... I have never seen anything similar! Its type, engines and origin are all unknown... and not only for me, even our scientists have got nothing to say. Of course, it could be a prototype, the result of the latest research of the Kissaki, but I personally agree with those who – very cautiously though – talk about alien origins.

So far there is no proof, the closer inspection of the Ronin did not provide any results, aside the insignificant fact that this incident could lead to a real calamity.

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 14/05/2112 posted:

Tricky procedure? Unusual building materials? All that time in the army must have dulled my imagination! The Kissaki weren't hiding just any old rubbish... They've stumbled over a huge treasure trove of alien technology near Pluto – this flash new spaceship was just part of the package. They've managed to get it working – I never realised how advanced Japanese technology is – and they moved from Jupiter to Pluto with jaw-dropping speed. They used the Jupiter base as a decoy to trick snoopers. A simple but effective plan – no one noticed that the enormous amounts of spare parts they took were enough to construct two space stations. They conducted mock-research at Jupiter, while their analysis of the alien technology was progressing at full speed at Pluto...

However, it seems they have encountered something they were not able to control... it's hardly normal for an AI – even a completely illegal one – to kill every resident of the complex under its command. Everything seems to prove that that is what has happened with the Jupiter Base... We're sure to find the cause of this tragedy aboard the mysterious space station near Pluto. Our scientists are requesting more and more information every minute. Colonel Finn is in constant negotiations with the mother-company, and our com-lines are overloaded around the clock. I'll have the honor of captaining the newly acquired alien ship on a little excursion round Pluto. I feel sorry for the poor souls aboard the Shukenja, but my sadness is countered by the excitement I feel about my future journey and other things to come...

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 24/05/2112 posted:

Decrease luminosity! And I want some music! Wagner? No thank you! I need something more relaxing... Debussy? Great. It was a tough fight... the Kissaki didn't get where they are by being weak... but still, their firepower surprised me. I'm glad Francis was here... I needed his support. No matter what they say... even a battle-hardened veteran needs his friends... real friends, who know what he expects from them, who understand his thoughts, who know his past, his virtues, his weaknesses, who see behind the uniform. Yes... it was a long time ago that Francis and I saw through each other, and we knew, no matter how hectic things got, we would be there to look out for one another. Now, once again, we venture blindly, perhaps recklessly, into the unknown. I like to think that he would be accompanying me even without company loyalty to think about.

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 01/06/2112 posted:

I feel like I just fell into a mountain river. One instant, you're on the shore, watching the sparkling water, the next you're up to your neck in the raging current, dragged off into the unknown, and you can only pray that it won't end in a huge waterfall...

I'm too tired and too excited... and I am a bit disjointed. The captured ship... is wonderful... I've never seen anything like it! Its computers are so advanced, they easily beat the combined computing capacity of every computer on Earth. It is sleek, elegant, efficient. Apart from fusion and interplanetary drives, 'only' assimilation and regeneration skills are present, but 'only' means they're just the ones that could be identified by our analysts... All we to explain the phenomena are guesses....

Our new companion is mysterious as well. She is an AI, who calls herself Angel. We know little about her, but we've accepted her advice since the moment she got on board. Let's face it - we do not know a thing about her. Still, because she said so, we jumped right in the middle of an unknown wormhole. I know, it was an extremely irresponsible decision for a senior officer to make.

For some reason, however, I feel my decision was the right one... I trust the strange AI... I don't have any other option. What am I hoping for? Well, this is the only place where I don't have to put on a front, where I do not have to weigh my every word... where I can say what I think... I hope that the AI leads us to the aliens, to the world where this ship originates from. I hope that my visit isn't a precursor to the conquest of Earth and the enslavement of Humankind, like in the movies.

This document is locked with a private code. I keep official notes... no one needs to hear this.

We got out from the wormhole. I still haven't recovered from the shock. I imagined lots of things - I even feared that we might be smashed to bits on the surface of some planet... but I could not have guessed, even in my wildest dreams, that we were going to encounter the descendants of the Noah. Along with everyone on Earth, I thought the experiment resulted in a catastrophe, and that my father's dream of colonizing space was nothing more than a brash fantasy that costs hundreds of lives. I was still young when I mourned my father - the weight of the other deaths hit me later. It drove me towards some indefinable, mystical goal, where I could finally set my soul and my father's soul free... And then.... after a bizarre voyage... I have found myself here, at the Noah Colony.

My first thought was of looking into my father's eyes after all these years... for a moment, anything seemed possible. There are no miracles of course - just errors in judgement. My father is dead. He was buried with full honours, and is considered an unsurpassed hero for his superhuman efforts that launched the colony on its way towards settlement and growth. May he rest in peace!

Well, in the end the wormhole has led us to aliens - not to the aliens who have designed the Angelwing, but aliens just the same. I'm glad to report that all those movies were closer to the truth than we thought. There's even a long-running space war to complete the picture. Maybe I ought to snap up the rights before every director in the Solar System gets wind of it!

The Noah settlers soon encountered representatives of a space-savvy race, the Vardrags - or, to be more precise, the Vardrags stumbled upon the humans. The Vardrags soon realized that the settlers needed help to stay alive, and that they could get something very valuable in return - the aggressiveness of the human race and their brutal effectiveness in combat. The Vardrags are a pacifistic people, but they are at war with another race - called the Gorgs, apparently - and the arrival of the Noah was something of a blessing for them. So... we have fled our Solar System, leaving behind the Earth with its petty quarrels and disputes, and now we're serving an alien race we have never heard of before as mercenaries. I wonder, is war an omnipresent curse in this Universe? Or is it more like a disease we humans carry, infecting every new place we visit? Perhaps these are questions unworthy of a soldier... I fear however, that this soldier in unworthy of the questions.

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 24/06/2112 posted:

I remember clearly that when my father left with the Noah, and I decided that I was going to be an astronaut and establish the first joint human-alien space city, I never thought about our initial contact. I had detailed plans about how I would set it up... none of which included firefights! I suppose it's a measure of how little I've changed that the reality surprises me so much. I can't let my childhood dreams go...

drat it, I always get so sentimental! That's the last thing I need right now. The reappearance of Rob was partially to blame. First I stumble upon Francis Delorain, and now, I meet Rob... and to make matters worse, it happens in a place where I can feel my father's spirit everywhere... it hardly seems surprising that my childhood memories are swarming round me like bees. I befriended Rob in my first school year. He was a bright kid, the brightest of our group, with all the trademark eccentricities you'd expect. I remember how my father laughed when I told him that Rob pulled his pants up to his armpits after urinating... and he really did. Naturally, we had the odd fight, but while Francis' big mouth was always getting him into trouble, Rob was a lot more shrewd... I think it's no coincidence that he has ended up as a diplomatic. He's not like Norbank. Good old Rear Admiral Norbank! He must have been a pro wrestler in a previous life! He gets called Rhino behind his back... Apparently, the rhino was an animal notorious for its combative temperament and supposed shortsightedness. The combination of these traits meant that rhinos indiscriminately attacked everything that got in their way, without thinking. Well... I suppose it's a tactic of sorts. How well it plays out for Norbank has yet to be seen.

Now this is what I call wine...I don't have a clue where this 'Tokajhegyalja' is, but it boasts some pretty good vineyards. I must visit the stasis storage areas of Noah Colony more frequently! Especially if bad news keeps coming in like this... Reminder! Talk to Rob about supplies!

I have a feeling that Angel has her own plans... naturally, I don't have the slightest idea of their nature and scale, but I'm sure that she only provides us with information after a thorough analysis of the situation - if she decides it's necessary, that is. Anyway... at present we are not in a position to argue; the best thing we can do is keep our eyes open. According to her latest comments, the life form occupying Earth is almost impossible to describe in human terms. The closest thing she can think of is a highly sophisticated Artificial Intelligence that possesses enormous knowledge. It has gained control over everything, not only the computers and other systems, but through cybernetic implants, the people as well. Nowadays, the majority of the population has something inside their bodies, but not everyone... not much of a comfort there. Angel believes that it is going to be able to control the people without implants sooner or later, as it will develop a universal controlling concept for Earth. There are still some groups that know about its presence and are fighting against it, but Angel says their efforts are futile... they do not have the slightest chance. Earth has been enslaved by a fearful space-monster - we've started referring to it as the Entity, but I think Worm is a better term. All we can do is sit and await a miracle. drat it, I'm not used to this! I'm a soldier - if I see the enemy, I attack the enemy. Angel says it would be suicidal to land on Earth... and for what it's worth, I believe her.

Well, I learn something new each day... especially in a totally alien environment! The last time I had to face the fact that hunting for lizards can be fatal, even if you are sitting on a battleship and attack them. Well, it is good as far as I can learn from the failures of others... and it seems like I am going to have the chance as I was enrolled in the Noah's Starhawk fleet. I do not have anything else but to do but to watch the 'real' battleships do the fighting. God! Something tells me I am going to have a hard time getting along with my superior officer...

Anyway I am far from being happy right now. The Earth is getting stuck deeper and deeper in the mess, caused by some space-worm, and I am stuck here, solving the military problems of stupid alien races. It requires lots of my energy to keep myself focused and to accept that the situation did not mature enough yet to liberate the Earth.

Despite all this, I cannot say that I am not interested in the events going on around me. If there was not the disaster of the Earth, I would be overwhelmed with joy. I just cannot wait for the mighty enemy, the Gorgs, to arrive. Hm, mighty enemy? But whose enemy that is the question. Not mine, for sure. Anyway. It is not my job to decide that. Rob said, that in reality we were sent into the Gorg campaign, not to be around... more precisely to hide Angel from the Vardrag's eyes. That is because these techno-geeks due to some religious belief cannot bear to be around something that acts while it does not have a body... or something like that. If they would discover Angel, it might lead to a conflict, which the Noah colony obviously cannot afford to happen. So, we took off with the Angelwing, towards the outer rim... currently we are stationed in the Atrox system, and my beloved superior officer, Rear-admiral Norbank assignned me to protect the support ship... now isn't that a glorious task?

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 04/09/2112 posted:

What, a personal message? Here? How the hell? From Daryl Sanderson? But this is my private terminal! How did she get in? What do you mean she hacked through the firewall? Forget it, forget it - show me!

Hmm... Daryl Sanderson... another Noah colonist who is worthy of attention. She is an astonishing woman, every man's dream and nightmare in one... she is hot, spirited, smart... and unbelievably loud-mouthed. Martial discipline is only a rope for her on which to balance... I think she would have fallen much sooner if her exceptional technical expertise did not protect her. Anyway, I like her as she is... that might change if she gets assigned under my command. Her heart's in the right place... her brain too, and her breasts... just once, I'd like to hear what she really thinks about Norbank... especially now, after his second ugly defeat. He is unbelievable... he manages to present massive failures as heroic escapes, and blames every mistake on his subordinates. His self-confidence is bullet proof... I envy him for that. As a matter of fact, he's exactly the kind of soldier we need in our battle against the Gorgs... though a little more thinking wouldn't go astray. The Gorgs are good fighters. They're tough, explosive, ambitious - but hardly stupid. I have to admit, I like their style... they are worthy adversaries, although their obsession with honour makes it difficult to take them seriously sometimes. I'll have to watch that - Norbank failed to take the Gorgs seriously, and look what happened to him!

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 06/09/2112 posted:

Well, at least I can't say that I'm bored... ever since we got through the Alpha Gate I've been wide-eyed, staring at dials and viewscreens. No sooner have I taken in one amazing sight than the next spectacle confronts me. I thought the Martian War was a challenge... I was mistaken. Never have I carried such as huge burden. But part of me loves the grandeur of it all... I'd rather be here than on the sidelines.

Another day, another riddle: The Ghosts... fantastic company. They seem like they're everywhere, but they only appear when they choose to... they're real phantoms. Their abilities are like magic - they seem impossible... but then, there were lots of things I thought were impossible that I now know to be commonplace. The Ghosts know everything - they're full of information... even though they keep the bulk of it to themselves. How they gather all that data, I cannot even imagine. I would pay a high price to stand face to face with one of them.

Well, I don't know what to say. There's a therapy subroutine in my terminal - it's designed for emergencies like this, but in the state I'm in I'll probably end up punching a hole through the viewscreen... this is just something I'll have to work out for myself. Let's see... Likely cause of stress: Miss Sweetwater... oh, sorry, I mean Commander Sweetwater! I hereby apologize to Daryl Sanderson, for calling her a nightmare...Daryl is a pleasant, flexible, courteous and astonishingly amiable woman... compared to Sweetwater, that is. Sweetwater is a harridan, a sociopathic harpy, an irresponsible, man-hating b-... Okay, okay... I think that's enough therapy for one day. I'm curious to know what I did to deserve such a, a... woman aboard my ship. drat - the least she could do is be less pretty. She gets me so riled I could blast her out of the airlock, then she looks at me with those astonishing eyes and... hmmph! She's extremely competent - I have to give her that. I don't think there are any other humans who can make an entire ship disappear... meaning she's indispensible, so however infuriating she gets, it looks like I'm stuck with her. I admire her, despite myself. She knows we need her, and she never gives away any more than she has to - just like her friends, the Ghosts, our deep scouts. They're mysterious, evasive... but at least I don't have to argue with them in the middle of a firefight! As if I didn't have enough enemies to butt heads with, now I have to fight my allies, too!

Personal Log of Marcus Cromwell - 12/09/2112 posted:

I have many decisions to make, but by far the most important is this: who is annoying me more, Rear Admiral Norbank, who threatens the entire human race with his rampant egotism and constant blunders, or my constant companion, the highly educated Commander Sweetwater... if I get stuck with one more of these borderline sociopaths, I'm going to throw myself to the Entity and be done with it. It's fortunate that Central Command has more than just rhinos... my promotion has come at the best time possible. As a Quick Reaction Task Force, we can move more freely... I hope that from now on we can pay more attention to Earth's plight. Naturally, this new task comes with a catch. Since the Angelwing is the only ship that is perfectly compatible with the ghost camouflage technology, we've received Commander Sweetwater as a permanent crew member. Such a great honour! At first I was furious, after that I started laughing... now, I'm starting to panic. I can't be falling for her... can I? Dear God, please no... Well, she surprised me when she handed the Ghost report about the dead mechanoid, without forwarding it to Norbank. We'll fly out and Central Command will be none the wiser... This segued nicely with my plans, so I didn't complain... I like to kid myself I'm still in control, but a casual observer could be forgiven for thinking that those two women are calling all the shots."

I really enjoyed this game right up until one level I never got past.

I'm pretty sure anyone who's played to the same level knows exactly which one it was. It's pretty infamous.

I love the ship designs, at least. And how hilariously visually destructive some of the weapons are.

Ah Nexus. I still should have my old physical copy somewhere.

It has an quite long and campaign with some interesting missions.
Neat space battles, which feel more 3d than Homeworld, with some very pretty and cool ship designs.

Some mechanics are rather odd implemented and don't do much in for the actual space battles gameplay.
(Crew experience mostly. I never got more than maybe one improvement on the MAIN ship and some small destroyer during the long campaign.)

Ooh I love this game.

It's challenging as hell (at least in my experience; I might just be bad), but the story is quite compelling and the attention to detail (like the manoeuvring thrusters) was very novel at the time. That's also why the B5 mod for it was so good.

I'd honestly suggest you ignore that deal and go for it on Steam instead. I do not know if THQ Nordic's patch works on the GOG version, and without it using a modern resolution is annoying as heck. Plus, the limited workshop support is still better than no workshop support. It's only £6.99 on Steam, so not that much more for the added convenience.

I would not call this game challenging, rather poorly balanced at the later stages. I presume the attention to detail and deep story come from the time the game was in development hell, which also goes to explain why a few missions are total shite and how the balance just died at the end. I'm definitely showing off the various mods to the game, Starfuries have never looked so good in a videogame.

It's really surprising how many of my favourite games were made in Eastern Europe. For example, Silent Hunter 3 (and I think 4) were made by Ubisoft Romania. Imperium Galactica and Nexus, Hungarian, as were Battlestations Midway and Pacific. Julian Gollop, the creator of X-Com, has been in Bulgaria since 2006. Tutorial messages promise no collisions, though we may find a way around that.

This game pretty much has the pace of the first two seasons of Battlestar Galactica, as the closest possible comparison I can make. The only difference is that it doesn't start in medias res, instead building up from routine. I guess maybe it could be best compared to Alien in that regard.

ALL PART OF MY BRILLIANT STRATEGY!
I've got this on my shelf. I remember giving it a shot once... I'm trying to remember when/why I didn't finish it, though. I think it was related to flubbing an early fleet setup with no option to undo and no real warning on how it should've been done(I essentially ended up unable to harm enemy ships at all, because I'd brought the wrong weapons), not having saved recently, and just not wanting to deal with replaying that much. So I just shut the game down and packed it away.

Still, it had some interesting ideas. I wonder how much of it I'm remembering right, or whether I'm mixing it up with some other game, because it feels like I'm remembering two plotlines that almost certainly couldn't actually be coexisting.

Yeah, using the attack hull- command also gives the ship the order to turn in a way that most main batteries can fire on the enemy. Manually targeting the guns may not get all guns firing because they are not in arc.
Commandos, when not used for plot purposes, are *supposed* to do damage to subsystems. But if you don't focus one of the subsystems in the enemys system overview they will just pick a random one. of couse that presumes the modded commandos work the same way.

And, as we have seen here, nuclear weapons do not observe friendly fire. Something to look out for.
