She tells him she can revive it, but there is a price. Jesse does whatever she demands, and she revives the chicken. Later, when Jesse fights Cassidy, Cassidy goes "It's the only way!" and Jesse replies "No. There is another way." or "I know someone who can help us". Cut to them driving to Angelville. Instead, the chicken crossing the road at the end still gave us all we needed to know. b) Cassidy hears the shot, runs into the house, finds Tulip, calls Jesse, says something like "You gotta come, right now Pardre, Tulip's been shot" and Jesse telling Starr "I have to go, my friends need me". Instead, Jesse picks up the phone, next scene he's running out of the plane. No time wasted. c) Cassidy has a long conversation explaining to Denis that he can't trust him, that he knows he's been killing people and probably hanging around with the Enfants du Sang. Cassidy elaborates that he can't let Denis do that and that he also can't have him around as a constant bad influence/resolve weakener. Denis says "Well what are you going to do about it, Papa?", Cassidy pushes him out of the window. Instead, all is told through visual evidence, and there's not much Cassidy has to say anymore. Still, there is a lot of time when even at the end of season 2, the whole thing still feels like prelude. EDIT: I know it's probably just Cassidy's accent, but I love his use of "Pardre". Cassidy was to keep Dennis from eating it the same way he ate the cat in the first episode this season. Dennis was gradually getting worse, even if he had a cheery demeanor. Cass was trying to protect the poor dog. I assumed the videos on the laptop were actually of Dennis killing women. That in combination with him having Tulips panties is what made Cassidy realize he had to kill his son. Cassidy seemed to also be afraid that Dennis was becoming or going to become a bad influence on him and lead him down a dark path.

Haha, this is kind of hilarious I don't think I'd ever seen this letters column page from Issue 1 in standalone format (I only ever owned the comics as trade paperbacks, and a lot of this stuff was omitted).   Really brings home what the world was like in 1995. Vertigo was a new imprint with a new idea: comics for adults, but in a gratuitously transgressive sense, simple exploitation mostly. Blood and guts. Offensiveness for its own sake. The kind of poo poo you could never get away with under the Comics Code. And Preacher was one of the first comics that was conceived with this "be as offensive as possible" mission in mind. It was never meant to be high literature, or even Alan Moore grade. Here Ennis is saying straight-up that he has less of a coherent story in mind than a mandate to just be as edgelordy as you want to be. It all seems so juvenile in retrospect, in a way. I was going to say (in reference to some of the preceding posts) something about how the show has diverged story-wise from the comic enough that the experience of the one hardly spoils you at all for the experience of the other; but more than that even, I think the bigger deal is trying to get back into that 1995 mindset and remember what it was like when basically the entire genre of "hosed up poo poo" was new to the world. Yeah if you asked me I'd probably say no fangs just to be different but... he's a vampire its okay if he has fangs. What's awful is the Buffy style "pop-out" fangs. Who invented that? Its not like fangs need to fold-away in order to be concealed. Are vampires worried about random police mouth inspections?

Him not having fangs in the comic was pretty much just "Vampires aren't like what you read about. They're just like normal people who live forever and can regenerate when they eat blood, which they hate the taste of but that's what they need to live".

I'm on episode 9 of season 1 and really liking it but I'm lost with the whole cowboy back in time story, I can't tell what's supposed to be going on with the flashbacks and I don't know if it's because I'm an idiot or if it's not supposed to be something that makes sense yet? Maybe because I'm not American and don't know American Western history or something? From what I'm thinking the cowboy's wife and daughter (or son?) is sick and needs medicine, wife sends him to Ratwater to get the medicine, on the trip to the town he meets a pioneer family that seems nice, while he's in Ratwaer he gets spotted as being a civil war soldier known for killing a bunch of people, he leaves the town and on the way back the nice family turned out to be murderers who hung a bunch of natives from a tree? He goes back to the town for...something? Something about a boy watching a woman get raped? Then gets beaten up and his horse shot so by the time he gets home his family is dead? Then goes back and murders everybody?

On the way home he sees the pioneer family entering Ratwater and goes after them because he knows they're not gonna last five minutes. They gently caress him up, he arrives at home too late to save his family, and he takes revenge on the entire town. Can't remember how the hanging natives enter into it but I think the idea is that that's what counts for Saturday night entertainment in Ratwater.

You don't need to be an American to get the Graham McTavish character's backstory. He was a Confederate soldier during the American Civil War, known for his savagery. His wife mostly reformed him from his violent ways. He passed a slow moving family on the way to Ratwater to get medicine, and also a tree full of scalped and hanged natives. He saw that people in Ratwater were terrible while the apothecary delayed him for MYSTERIOUS REASONS, due to them raping that family. He passed the slow moving family going to Ratwater on his way back with the medicine and decided that he should do something, even though he had been delayed, because his wife had taught him to try to be a decent person. The slow moving family were terrible Ratwater people, they had murdered and scalped the natives. His wife and child died because he hosed around trying to be a good person, which was obviously a terrible idea in retrospect. Ratwater Murder Time.
