So... the anniversary guaranteed 5* pull. Let's talk odds.

There are 23 possible 5*s from the pull. 22 if Tidus is excluded (unlikely).

Each characters has a ~4.35% chance of appearing as the rainbow special.

Characters by Tier:

~39.15% chance of a really good unit: Orlandeau, Noctis, Tidus, Olive, Fryevia, Aileen, Wilhelm, Rem or Reberta
~34.8% chance of a good unit: Marie, Fohlen, Trance Terra, Luneth, Dark Fina, Seabreeze Dark Fina, Emperor or Gilgamesh
~17.4% chance of getting a mediocre unit that has to be enhanced to be useful: Lightning, Queen, Ace or Ramza
~8.7% chance of getting a terrible unit with a good trust: Dark Knight Cecil or Delita

As someone who has both Dark Knight Cecil and Delita... that 8.7% feels more like a 99.9%

dk cecil is gonna be a top tier finisher with his enhancements

Big damage, but requires a special setup that will detract from even bigger damage.

1) His big finisher attack takes 98% of his health if dual wielding.
2) If he doesn't have enough health to do the attack, he dies. 0 health, not 1.

In other words, he needs a heal both before and after his moves unless you're doing a singlehand Blade Mastery build, which largely takes away from his DPS. This means 2 healers, at which point bringing 2 DPS and 1 healer makes for bigger damage.

If you have characters like Noct, Tidus, TG Cid... he has no place in your party.

This is especially true in that even enhanced DK Cecil will start to get eclipsed by power creep units very soon. I speak of gold crystals, not rainbow ones. Ashe, Victoria, William, Zidane, Kuja, Agrias, etc. There are also a trio of guaranteed 5* pulls coming up in a few months, assuming we get with JP got for FF 30th Anniversary.

DK Cecil is definitely a trust and rust character. Send him on expeditions or something.

Enhanced DK Cecil full heals after every turn. Literally heals 9999 + some spirit modifier. So you need him to only be full health before he attacks, not after. Also it means he can do amazing tanking strats.

If you awaken his Soul Eater to +2, it's 120% of health, so he will suicide automatically if you dual wield. He has to remain alive for that heal to proc.

His awakening is also a huge investment. 50 38 25 12 4 in power crysts for Soul Eater and 38 20 13 3 1 in support crysts for Skikkoku, unless Alim feels the need to give us a discount.

There are better uses for that many crysts. If you want to do it, by all means, but there are other finishers that hit just as hard without requiring this much setup.

JP Update:

Basch (5*/6*) is now the top tank in JP meta. He has 75% Physical and Magical cover abilities that also reduce incoming damage by 60% (but only one type can be active at any time). Add in a 70% DEF/SPR party buff, 50% 5 turn singletarget breaks with a 300% damage multiplier, 45% 5 turn AoE breaks and self-healing. His TM is the best shield in the game, by far. 60 DEF, 70 SPR, 20% dodge and 50% Lightning resist. Bonus points: His tanking abilities stack with those of Warrior of Light (phys) or Mistair (magic) which can be used to create an impenetrable wall for your party.

Gabranth (5*/6*) is also a really good tank, in the offensive direction. Dual wielding him with swords and daggers increases his defense, plus he has a nasty 500% damage counter. Other highlights include a 100% provoke that reduces damage taken by 30%, a 40% 3 turn partywide damage reduction buff (stacks with Sakura/Crowe/9S's mitigation), an ability combo that has a 100% chance to stick every enemy with every status effect in the book and a 450% AoE phys attack that inflicts a 50% fire imperil. Arena nightmare. Trust is a sword with 135 ATK and a Defense +50% passive.

Vayne (4*/6*) has a 25% singletarget damage mitigation abilities that stack with other tanking mitigation, plus a special 50% version usable after LB. His limit break reduces enemy attack and magic by 90% (yes, ninety). Combine with Basch, WoL or Mistair for best results. Otherwise, he falls into that weird physical/mage/support/debuff hybrid category, with Dualcast Holy/Thundaga/Firaga, Dispelga, a 45% ATK/MAG buff that increases burst fill rate, a 45% DEF/SPR buff that adds regen and an 810% holy attack that inflicts light imperil, usable after casting that damage mitigation buff I mentioned above (good chain cap alongside Orlandeau). Trust is a materia with +20% HP and +15% ATK/MAG.

Drace (4*/6*) ...who saw her coming? She's a support/chain caster with a drinking problem (triple effect of item usage) that removes status debuffs from your party while attacking with her chain ability. Her spell kit includes Firaga, Thundaga, Bizzaga and Curaja (more of an AoE backup, you'll be using her chaining ability as primary damage). Drace's limit break increases party DEF/SPR by 100% for 3 turns, plus another 20% damage mitigation partywide on top of that. Also of note: she's able to serve as a mana battery in a pinch and can remove stop without cleansing other status effects, which comes in handy on certain upcoming trial fights. Trust is an 80 ATK 100 MAG +10% MP sword, which Fryevia users should already be foaming at the mouth for.

Definitely a defensive banner.

New feature over in the JP version: 3-star Eidolons. Siren and Ifrit were the first to get the new form. Base stats are a bit over double compared to the 2* form, with a max level of 60. A new tier of magicite is also out, which will help with those top levels.

Siren's a bit of a wimp, with 1.2 million health, but she'll put up massive buffs that have to be dispelled (or, in our case, stolen by Xon). You can oneshot her with the right setup, though she's immune to breaks. Ifrit, on the other hand, has 50 million health. It's an endurance fight, and you're at a huge disadvantage without both a physical and a magical tank on point. In terms of abilities, both fights are similiar to Dark Siren/Dark Ifrit, except fought one at a time.

As for board abilities, all of the 3-star hex squares cost an ever-increasing amount of SP to acquire, so you're going to have to plan out a specific build to shoot for.

Siren's 3* form adds Mage's Ballad (MP recovery song), Hero's Rime (Ramza's 40% stat buff song), Camouflage (passively decreases chance to be targeted), Vigorous Voice (passively reduces MP cost of all songs), Enhanced Summoning (boosts Siren's damage), Enhanced Elemental Defense (improves water resist up to 90% total), Barwatera, Watera and Imperil as new options. 3* Siren also gains immunity to silence as a baseline.

Ifrit's 3* form adds a second tier of Plant Killer and Beast Killer passives, 75% and affecting both magic and phys damage, Incinerate (think Titan's Tumult, AoE fire damage), Berserker (start battle under Berserk status), Enhanced Summoning (boosts Ifrit's damage), Enhanced Elemental Defense (improves fire resist up to 90% total), Provoke, Brave, Faith, and Barfira as new options. 3* Ifrit also gains immunity to darkness as a baseline.

Update on that last batch of enhancements on the JP side: The only one worth writing about is Meliadoul's, which puts her on the same level as 9S. Shellbust Stab and Hellcry Punch get upped to 250% damage and 50% debuff, plus her blessing gains a partywide 15% damage reduction and a regen effect for 5 turns and her passive gains a large abount of DEF/SPR and doubles the MP refresh rate to 10%. All of this takes her from otherwise mediocre to fairly upper tier, and the cost in crysts is pretty reasonable. Only problem is, by the time this all comes around, she'll be seriously outclassed again. Kinda like Tactics. :v:

PS: Jake isn't as powerful as the other CG characters. His limit break is a ridiculously powerful finisher, but it reduces his DEF/SPR by 99% for a turn, making sure anything will oneshot him without full tank protection.

Well, you FF4 people, rejoice. Next JP event is FF4.

Holy Dragoon Kain 5*/6* - He jumps. He dispels with his jumps. He imperils with his jumps. He lands immediately with his jumps. Trust reward is a helmet with a massive amount of attack power.

Young Rydia 5*/6* - Another summoner unit in the style of Eiko/Garnet/Yuna. Main difference is that she's more of a caster DPS, with spells like Tornado, Quake and Meteor on top of her Mist Dragon summons. Still doesn't stop her from having Curaja and Raise. Trust master is a materia that increases both Magic and Evo Magic.

Yang 4*/6* - A charge character. Can charge up to three times, then release for massive damage. Not much else is known right now.

Edward/Gilbert as the 3* fodder unit, maxing at 5*. That said, his songs are more potent than enhanced Ramza. Not much else is known right now. Too spoony for 6*.

I was trying to figure out why Orran was ranked higher than Meliadoul, who has good breaks and the 80% ReRaise, while Orran just looks like a weaker version of Marie and his dualcast addition seemed to add little to his kit other than bring him closer to being a Marie substitute.

Then I noticed his LB.

I can't say this for certain, but I'd venture a guess that at some point being able to abuse 84% AOE Stop is going to make something drat easier.

Is there a more consistent way to apply stop in the future? I have no clue but 84% is pretty darn good. Time to start feeding him pots.
Meli is very much a situational character, but there are three good reasons you'd bring her:
1) there are a few fights where AoE and multi-stat breaks work against you (break counters are a thing), which is where WoL and Ling gets sidelined for Orlandeau/Knight Delta/Meli.
2) she's got that on-demand reraise, which is great for fights against insta-kill bruisers (assuming you don't have a setup that can feed Rikku enough crystals to LB every turn).
3) her 60% AoE magic buff is better than Minfilia's, and her singletarget is the same potency but lasts for 5 turns instead of 3, so she's great for any caster-heavy team (Fryevia/Ace/Emperor/Dark Fina). Fryevia, Ace, Emperor and Meli on the same team is some seriously great damage.

Basically, she gets dinged because other characters like Warrior of Light and Minfilia already do what she does and better fill out a team. Once she gets her enhancements, she'll have damage reduction added to Heaven's Blessing, which lets her drop a massive amount of mitigation on a tank. This makes her a great match with tanks like Snow, Mistair, Veritas of the Earth, Gabranth, etc.. Her breaks eventually get upped to 50% with enhancements, and have a decent multiplier after enhancement, which is better than WoL will ever have and can squeeze out more damage if used as a chain cap. Unfortunately, this is what 9S gets on his breaks by default. Here's to hoping her global enhancements push that up to 55% or 60%.

Also, Meli's trust master is one of Tilith's best armor options, given that it's high defense, triggers Y'shtola's trust materia robe requirement and the +15% MP gives you more options to boost her low HP.

There are 5* units that absolutely poo poo on Meli, like Zargabaath and 2B. But they're rainbows. Regular players will eventually get Meli from day to day gold crystals.

CAPT. Rainbowbeard posted:

Chain frames would be a very handy guide to match up units for chaining, I think.
The main reason I hesitate to add this to the spreadsheet is that it already exists on Exvius Wiki: https://exvius.gamepedia.com/Multiple_Hits

I may make it a list of characters that have the same frame rate, to use as a base for chaining.

The big thing to remember is that chains break when the same character hits twice in a row. Ideally, you want two or more characters with the same frame delay, positioned in the same row, activated simultaneously, to generate a good chain. In general, there are three main groups of chainers that work well together:

The "5 frame" chainers: Amelia, Bran, Lunera, Chizuru, Gilgamesh, Kelsus, Rikku (Lightning Rod), Tidus, Orlandeau (Lightning Stab) and Knight Delita (Lightning Stab) fit here. Eventually, Prishe, Prompto (ballistic) and Camille will make this list. These characters are harder to chain with, due to how fast the hits come and usually feature a reduced hit count. In general, you need at least two of these guys together to get a good chain going. Setzer and Yun will work here, but you need at least two other 5-frame chainers staggered to prevent their shorter 3 frame delay from breaking the chain. Lulu's Flood fits in here when dualcast.

The "7 frame" chainers: Orlandeau (Divine Ruination), Ace, Mercenary Ramza, Fryevia, Rikku (unenhanced Tidal Wave), Vaan, Trance Terra, Edgar, and Cupid Luna. Down the road, Veritas of the Dark, Onion Knight, Cloud, Zidane, 2B, White Lotus Fina, Loren, Beatrix, Camille, Musketeer Jake (Vaporizer), enhanced Aileen and enhanced Agrias will join this list. These characters tend to be powerful anyway, which is why they are so highly rated in the JP meta and represent the most dominant group of DPS characters. Three of any of these characters and you're more or less set for huge chains. The caveat is that some of these characters can only contribute early on, making them harder to fit in (hello, Ace). Also, Rikku falls off this list if you enhance her Tidal Wave, so think about that. Shantotto's dualcast Tornado also technically fits in here, once she goes 5*.

The "10 frame" chainers: Agrias (unenhanced Divine Ruination), Ashe, Fohlen, Knight Delita (Commanding Blade), Rasler and Reberta. Eventually, Aura, 2B, Emeilia, Kamui, Musketeer Jake (Dueling), Prompto (Circular Saw) and Rikku (enhanced Tidal Wave) will join this list. William and Young Rydia's Quake also spells fit on this list when dualcast.

Note that slower chainers will work in combo with faster chainers, but you're going to need two chainers from the faster group to keep the chain alive.

The really, really good chainers are the ones on the same chain speed that have tons of hits. Lunera, Gilgamesh, Tidus, Amelia, Rikku and eventually Camille, Lulu and Prompto go very, very well together. Rikku and Merc Ramza, paired with Onion Knight, Cloud, Loren, Orlandeau and Beatrix are also awesome. The third group of standouts is Ashe, Aura, Reberta, Emilia, Fohlen, Knight Delita and Prompto.

---------------------------

The best chainers are duplicate characters. Since the generic go-to friend unit outside of King Mog is usually Orlandeau or Fryevia, the 7 frame chain meta is heavily favored. Keep this in mind when 2B, Veritas of the Dark, Onion Knight and Cloud come down the pipe.

Free to play is going to mainly get stuck with 5 frame meta characters. This is why Rikku was a must pull for free players and why Edgar Chainsaw is a thing: they work in combination with 7 frame meta friend units. Vaan's recent 6* upgrade and Zidane's eventual 6* form coming around the New Year are also good freebie 7 frame meta characters.

P.S.: Merc Ramza isn't as terrible as people make him out to be. He might have suicidal tendencies, but he chains well with Orlandeau/Fryevia and can take a hit.

(That's with barely any physical TMRs on either Ramza or Luneth, and only a yellow Tri-Beam from Ace)

I see that occasionally, but then it snaps back. Not sure, but I think it might have to do with the sheet starting its life as an Excel import into Google Docs. I also started referencing across tabs with this update... wondering if that's having an impact.

------------------------

Verdict is in on the latest JP banner... 4 gets the shaft: Dark Kain and Young Rydia are good, but weak for their place in the meta. Yang is mediocre for where he is in the meta. Rosa's 6* is on par with Luka or Refia, which isn't saying much in a meta where 6* Roseila just got triplecast white. This is a banner that would fit well in the global meta right now. *cough*

Young Rydia: She's got her Chocobo, Cockatrice, Mindflayer and Bomb summons as partial summon gauge attacks, plus Mist Dragon as an LB and can summon the party's equipped espers. Hint: her entire role is to spam Bahamut every other turn. Outside of that, she can use double black to cast Thundaga, Blizzaga, Bioga, Aspir, Drain, Death, Quake, Tornado, Flare and Meteor, which allows her to ancient magic chain with Shantotto or William. In a pinch, she also has Curaja, Esuna and Raise, but cannot dual-cast them. Passive include a bunch of evo magic boosts, auto-refresh and immunity to disease/petrification.

Dark Kain: Kain's gimmick is that he both weakens an enemy to Water/Wind/Darkness and gives himself that element at the same time, after which he can unleash an 11 hit chain on the target. He's also got a 1 turn jump, a 2 turn jump, and a set of jumps that dispel all positive status effects and replaces them with a Water/Wind/Dark imperil. He looks to be in the 5 frame chain club, which will add some options to that group but alienate him from the 7 frame cool kid club. That said, he pairs very well with Tidus and Lulu.

Yang: Yang is a fairly straightforward physical chain attacker in the 7 frame club with Orlandeau, Cloud and whatnot. He's got built in dual wield for fists and gains 50% ATK when equipped with a fist and also gains a 2x damage multiplier when unarmed. His abilities will trigger twice if unarmed, as if he were dual wielding. Single target punching and AoE kicking are the ONLY things he does... not even a self buff like Luneth has. Elements must be imparted by weapons, as he has no elemental attacks. Horrible gear selection as well... just hammers, fists, hats and clothes. That's it.

Rosa: She gets some Tilith-style buffs with her 6* upgrade, and is one of the few units that can remove stat down (ATK/MAG/etc) effects from the party without dispelling everything. Specials include an ability that combines Curaja and Esunaga, a Spirit-based bow attack, Esunaga, Holy and Arise. No dual cast, which is a huge disadvantage for her given that Roselia just got triple white. Still heavily outclassed by other healers, and

I'm slightly bitter that I've pulled Rosa 21 times since launch, 3 times as a rainbow crystal before the change... enough times to get her trust master bow. Never stop disappointing, Rosa. Never stop disappointing.

Nier is totally definitely next week you guys!

Etc... For a month or two.

Gumi is unpredictable. I never thought they'd go Story Event->King Mog->Story Event especially with the latter two overlapping. It makes logical sense to throw in a Raid in there but ah well. Gotta get that Veritas whale money.

Nah, we knew this was going to happen. The first wave of Veritas are literally riiiiight under the DQ characters and Balthier on the spreadsheet under upcoming. There is some variation to release order, but it's fairly predictable. NieR will probably take the spot of the SaGa collab next month.

--wait, DQ characters? Did I miss a memo that said we were getting the Dragon Quest collab after all? (You know, about 5 months after it's relevant for anything but Trust Masteries)?
We're not. I have them struck through and listed as never. Whoever wins the character content better ask for Dragon Lord as their free unit of choice. He's in the game files. :v:

NieR is a raid event, so it could pop in place of FF11. There are two potentially missing collabs with Monster Hunter and Imperial SaGa next month, which is where NieR is more likely to appear (Imperial SaGa in specific was a raid event).

August, in no particular guaranteed order:
FFBE Storyline (Veritas of the Dark/Flame/Earth, Victoria, Tim)
FF11 Raid (Prishe, Werei)
FF3 King Mog (Onion Knight, Aria, Desch)
(expect a continent update and an awakening banner week around the end of the month, possibly Charlotte/Hayate 6*)

September, in no particular guaranteed order:
FFBE Storyline (Veritas of the Light/Waters/Heavens, Aura)
NieR: Automata Raid
FF15 Kingsglaive King Mog (Nyx, Crowe, Glauca)
(insert Noctis banner here to celebrate his global un-nerfing)

PSA: the best argument for saving for NieR is that it's limited release. There's a good chance you'll only get one shot at 9S, and that on demand 30% party damage mitigation + 50% breaks are a pretty big deal.

NieR is a raid event. There is a good chance that A2 will be in the Raid Gacha with Adam and Eve, like Y'shtola/Papalymo/Yda/Thancred/Minfilia, leaving only 2B, 9S and 21O on the banner.

Adam was from the raid gacha in JP.

There is only one banner you should be saving for.

Edit: Earth Veritas is cool, too.

Edit 2: It's so close to OP White Mage time, too.

Edit 3: Who the gently caress am I kidding? All in on NieR.
