The build quality on mine is great but the software for it is absolutely janky as gently caress. I know you can wrangle it in to letting you assign media functions to keys, it's just... A Chore.

Is this still the only option for a decent mechanical wireless numpad? Backlighting and media keys would be cool, but not required.

I really want to get a TKL keyboard very soon because my current mechanical Logitech full keyboard is dying. I don’t need a numpad all the time, but it’s very helpful for a couple different tasks. And I want a wireless one as I really don’t want to plug and unplug it all the time depending on my need for it. There doesn’t seem to be much choice still?

I have a Q0 Pro and just leave it plugged in all the time but moved off to the other side of my mouse location. Honestly though if the cable is right there then it’s probably just as easy to quickly plug it in as to move it into position…

Are these 8bitdos well received? I’m intrigued about the keyboard itself too, doesn’t look too expensive
Edit: oh actually nevermind about that keyboard, it doesn’t have any non-English layouts available on German Amazon. Nor any switch options.

That numpad is cool as hell though

there's an ongoing effort to get SOCD cleaning upstreamed into QMK so you probably won't need external hardware for long

Damnit, well now I have an 8bitdo numpad to match the TKL.

I've been using a Varmillo one for 10 years which was totally fine. Didn't love the 00 key on it, but real nitpick.

I mostly only ever used the pad for more flight sim controls, though even that's way less necessary these days.

Neat.

Unfortunately, my keyboard uses ZMK. Not sure if SOCD is in their plans.

Just got my Wooting Two HE with wrist rest and double shot caps!

It's really cool but I am having the new keyboard blues where I need to learn to type again.

Been putting up with a lovely membrane Steelseries waterproof thing that I emergency bought when I spilt coffee all over my previous keyboard.

The only thing... the backspace key feels kind of... bad? Every key is just perfection but the backspace feels stiff, slow and unresponsive. Sits flush with all the other keys so I am pretty sure I popped it in right. Anyone else had a similar issue?

Overlubed stabilizer maybe? That's what I've found to cause sluggish feeling/slow rebound. Remove it and make sure the stabilizer rises and falls ok using tweezers or fingers. Also have a look in it and see if it is overfilled compared to the other ones.
Conversely, maybe it is lacking lube and is sticking/rubbing.

Also just make sure it is clipped in correctly using the others as a guide since they feel good. I recently had the space bar be weird and it was just that one of the small clip parts wasn't totally in. You could hardly see it but it was enough to twist things a bit and drag the whole assembly.

If you do need to adjust them or lube them, they show how on this video. There are loads of similar ones, but this should show your specific keyboard, or one very similar.
They also show lubing switches in this but I'd not start loving about with that, it's not relevant to your issue

This question is probably impossible to answer, but is normal house basement humidity fine for mechanical keyboards, or should I be concerned about making my basement into an office? It doesn’t really feel humid, but is kind of musty and cool all the time. It’s furnished, from the late 70s and has never had mold anywhere.

It'll be fine. They are pretty simple devices and robust enough to withstand most everyday environments.
Hell, I've seen ancient OG Cherry keyboards on factory lines working without flail for decades with no maintenance and zero cleaning.

I wouldn't worry about your keyboard but I'd get a humidity meter to keep an eye on any conditioned space in the summer. If the humidity is very high it may be worth running a dehumidifier to cut down on any issues like mold.
https://www.amazon.com/ThermoPro-TP50-Digital-Thermometer-Temperature/dp/B01H1R0K68

Even with the AC on I run a dehumidifier in the unfinished basement here to keep it to around 50% RH.

Bought a Royal Kludge full size with red switches on a sort of whim. So far, I like it. A little noisier than I expected since I understood red was the quiet one, but it feels pretty good and takes up less real estate than my old 10+ year old Saitek Eclipse.

e: To be clear, I think the noise is just the key bottoming out on the switch (plastic to plastic contact) not the switch itself per se.

Was getting some random double presses on a few keys on my keychron q5 max. I decided to swap the switches that were acting up with the switches from some less important keys and that seems to have fixed the issue. But also the keys i swapped the 'bad' switches to are all working fine now too? Was it just a bad connection? How sensitive are switch connectors usually? Am I gonna have to disassemble this thing and thoroughly clean it every month or something?

No real way to tell for sure without just seeing if it will happen again. I used to get semi-regular keypress issues (double presses usually) with my old Omnikey ultra with complicated clicky white ALPS (IIRC), but that seemed to be a somewhat common thing with some ALPS switches. I'd usually desolder one and take it apart and clean the inside with the contact leaves and click leaf if I couldn't get it working right by spraying a little deoxit contact cleaner down into it while tapping it a ton. I think switch issues are often dirt or dust in the actual contacts causing weird debounce issues, and with new boards there could also be connection issues with the hotswap sockets, but I haven't seen that too often myself.

Dr. Video Games 0031
Jul 17, 2004

It's just a couple months old, and a light amount of dust was around the switch sockets when I pulled the switches. I guess I'm just gonna have to be extra diligent about dusting.

Rexxed

Cherry style switches tend to be better about keeping dust out than ALPS were but it can still get carried in with the switch stem. I haven't had much of that issue with cherry stuff but there's a lot of switch types now so there's likely some variation.

YerDa Zabam
Aug 13, 2016

Couple of times that I've had double presses (as well as "stuck" presses that just keep going) it was the hot swap socket that was the issue, not the switch. Sometimes just swapping and re-seating can fix it. If not then (very) slightly twisting the pins to give a more solid connection did the trick.

I’m thinking about getting work to pay for an ergo keyboard so I don’t have to continue lugging my ergodox ez back and forth when I go to the office. Anyone know if new ones come with USB-C? I’d be tempted to get another one, but the Glove80 caught my eye and I was curious if anyone had had one before

The oryx configurator is pretty handy, but apparently QMK is easier to mess around with since the last time I tried to 10 years ago

but a converter or c-c should work fine

oryx is easier in the very end, but misses some functionality, but nothing major.

if you are interested in trying else, I really can't recommend the Dactyl Manuform enough. The fact the thumb cluster is curved down (in a hard to explain way) makes it much more comfortable to use, requires practically no "reaching" I felt the ergodox asked for. Most standard models don't have all the extra keys that the ergo has though, unfortunately.

I got my kit from diykeyboards.com, the guy is pretty responsive and nice -- he also printed a custom shell for me too (we added a trackball to the right side and a joystick on the left)

c-c won't always work. I have a GMMK that only works with a USB-C (keyboard) to USB-A (computer) or USB-C to USB-A to USB-C dongle, but not with a USB-C to USB-C cable. It has something to do with the keyboard USB controller using USB 1.1 or something.

C to C requires a few extra cheap components to clarify which side is the host, and every dumbass upgrading older designs to USB-C without reading the spec just ignored that, which results in a device that only works properly with a C to A cable
