Nice.

As for a diy section, I'm in the process of finishing up a board I designed and just need to handwire it so I'll post a write up on that at some point if anybody is interested in doing it the hard and expensive way (in my case, but it can be much cheaper).

The coating is crappy but not a big deal for me. They just get dirtier faster. I believe you can remove the coating with soap and water but not 100% on that. I don't know if they do it on all sets anymore as a lot of nerds complained so some searching around may turn up a set without the coating.

Has anyone got any experience with flashing the firmware for keyboards that use firmware from input club? I have a whitefox and am pretty content with it, except whenever it's power cycled the LEDs default to 100% brightness. Why anyone would put LEDs on a keyboard with completely opaque keycaps (with non-standard sizing, so it's not as if you can easily swap them out) is beyond me and I think it looks gently caress-ugly, hence I've bound a key combo to turn the lights off, but I have to do this every time they come on. The only information I have on defaulting them to off comes from this post, which points to a file to edit and mentions 'compiling your own firmware'. I can't find any mention of how to do this on google - does anyone know how I'd go about doing this?

Go to a best buy and try out some of the boards there. They typically have the 3 main cherry switches (red, blue, and brown) on various boards on display. Everything else can be compared to those in some way (smoother, heavier, more bump, etc than [cherry switch]).

The closest I can think of is buying a preassembled Tada68 on Aliexpress with Zealios switches in 78g, it will run you $145 for a standard board or $215 with an aluminum one. https://www.aliexpress.com/item/Tad...sAbTest=ae803_1

I have a Tada and they're great.

oh you're in new zealand. that's rough. you could try taobao.com but it may be hard to find a reputable seller.

superbuy is a proxy service which is usually the easist way to order from sites like taobao.

I found this link: https://www.superbuy.com/en/page/bu...1950222811.html

The site (jd.com) is basically like taobao. This appears to be leopold's official online store in the area.

this is a direct link to their listing

https://item.jd.com/11950222812.html

price is $225 USD

I've never used them or really heard of them but it's all I could find.

This was my first keyboard build. I knew the basics of wiring it up but I did some trial and error along the way as I noted in the log. There are other guides to building keyboards that do a good job and normally its pretty straight forward. All diodes in a row are soldered together in a single line, then the columns are put in and everything goes back to a pin.

The biggest pain is the firmware, since I have no idea how to parse the keymap that is made for this matrix so I can't easily identify how to change it. I'm working on though.

That's a drat pretty keyboard, could you explain the layout though? Is it pure flash or is there some sort of ergonomic logic?

EDIT: Would you like it in the OP?

I took all the keys from a standard 60% and lined them up like a planck board. This had the effect of giving me those even angles for the keys on each side. Pretty much everything is in easy reach with little used things out of the way (my Fn key is far bottom left).

SymmetryrtemmyS posted:

I think you can just use this tool to automatically make a firmware file for you.

I did use that, it's in my build log link. I meant actually reading the keymap for a 5x16 keyboard that is written in 8x8 is hard to follow.

good work!

Black on numbers 5 and 0 as a quick visual reference. I'll probably change it since numbers on an ortho layout are pretty easy to nail down. I don't intend to keep these caps on here, but until the Miami dolce set starts to exist this is the best option I have.

I'm having a little trouble with a keyboard and am looking for some advice. I'm posting this here because I don't necessarily trust what I'm hearing from the company.

I ordered a wireless bluetooth keyboard direct from a manufacturer, and out of the box it would only work when connected to USB, as if the battery wouldn't hold a charge. As long as the keyboard is drawing power from USB (whatever the source), it works over bluetooth, but unplug the USB, and it powers off immediately.

The manufacturer sent me a replacement battery to swap myself. Upon opening the case, I saw this.

I did go ahead and replace the battery, and the problem has not resolved. Interestingly, the keys in those pictures, as well as their LEDs, work properly. They also are nowhere near any of the components that would be involved in charging the keyboard.

I sent these pictures to the manufacturer, and their response is that they don't use water near the keyboards during the manufacturing, and it never would have passed QC like that, so this is 100% not caused by them. But I know that I have not spilled anything on the keyboard myself.

So, I have two questions:

1) Could anything else have caused that damage?

2) Is that potentially related to the problem I'm having with the keyboard?

I'm kind of in a bind here because my Specific Keyboard Needs are only met by this keyboard.

do you have a multimeter? plug in the keyboard and test the battery connections to see if there is any power going to them. The charging circuit may be dead if the battery is new. Also, gross.

The layout appeals to me, and it looks like there are some non-soldering diy options from China available on aliexpress. I'm basically looking for a compact keyboard that has iso nordic with arrow keys, and I think an ortholinear would be easy to fenagle into something optimal.

I'm on the fence about ordering a vortex race 3 or looking into some sort of ortholinear setup. Interested to hear about any insight into how awesome and/or dumb ortholinear keyboards are!

My primary usage would be home for video games but the keyboard would see quite a lot of usage to type word documents as well.

Edit: this is the diy kit I am talking about btw

ortho is cool don't let anybody tell you different. That's a fairly popular kit from china. The other option in a similar form factor but a bit smaller is the preonic from olkb.com. No idea when it would ship though as they may still be working on their massdrop orders.

Both of the boards are fully programmable so you can have any keys anywhere you want. If you're looking for keycaps that are not just blanks you may have to search around a bit for ones you like and that have the right letters in the right profile (DSA profile caps are all the same height so they can go anywhere on the board and not look out of place or feel odd).

In other news, I got my Miami Dolch set.

I gotta say though, the PCB design on this is genius. All 4 are identical, but completely reversible for left and right. The switch mounts pop out so 2 of them are used as a plate that sandwiches the battery in them. I have no idea when I will put this together but I like it. Makes up for me needing to remove the bluetooth from my own custom because it was just too lovely and fussy.

I've had to install pcb mount stabs after i soldered all the switches. You probably will not be able to bend the plate and pcb enough to slide that one out and a new one in without unsoldering the few switches around each stab to get enough flex to make that happen. Keep in mind the stabilizer part on the pcb needs to be lifted up off of it.

It's a pain in the rear end but it can be done.

You might be able to push the bar out of the housing and put in a new stem with the legs clipped off through the top then slide the bar back in but I've never done that.
