areas with wealthier, more educated populations would be expected to have a lower birthrate. one single province halving its birthrate in two years (according to China's own figures) is worrying.

Here are a few possible causes extrapolated from survivor testimony and, again, Chinese government documents such as the Karakax list. These are all footnoted btw so you don't have to take the New York Times's word for it.
  1. Free birth control. I know, how horrible. Of the Xinjiang budget allocated to free birth control, about 75% was earmarked for sterilisation (tubal ligation).
  2. Forced sterilisation. Source is that Zenz guy unfortunately, but he lists his own sources.
  3. IUD placement. According to the report linked in (2.), 'In 2018, 80 percent of all new IUD placements in China were fitted in XUAR, a region with merely 1.8 percent of China’s population, a 77.5 percent increase from four years prior'.
  4. Birth control and forced abortions in the camps. According to survivor testimony: 'As for the pill they received, I think it was a birth control pill. They didn’t want any births. If you were pregnant when you came to the camp, they performed an abortion. If you refused, they took you to a stricter place, one without visits with relatives.'
  5. The Karakax list notes reasons for placing Uighurs in detention camps include 'birth policy violations' and 'Unsafe post 80s, 90s, or 00s person' (i.e., being of childbearing age).
In combination with satellite images of destroyed mosques and huge new prison camps, all of this seems totally plausible to me. It's all textbook ethnic cleansing and jives with (1) China's own anti-Muslim rhetoric, (2) previous Chinese population control policies, and (3) the Chinese governments own documents and published stats. Why on earth would I take the word of the CCP that no genocide is occurring when it bars reporters from Xinjiang?

lol
