I forget what was Gladwell's Paterno argument? That he didn't know?

vyelkin posted:His argument is that people default to believing others when told something, and so you can't blame someone for believing the pedophile when the pedophile said they weren't a pedophile. Which is dumb as gently caress because in the Paterno case he was also told by someone else that the guy was a pedophile and evidently didn't believe them, so this idea of defaulting to trust and belief doesn't hold up even in the one case where he wants it to hold up, because it means trusting one side of a he-said/she-said situation over the other, and to get into the details of why you would trust one side over another you have to get into issues of structural power inequalities and so on, which Gladwell doesn't want to do because the whole book is actually just his preemptive defence for why he was on Epstein's rape plane. hahahah this is even dumber than I remembered good lord.

I know none of their arguments are ever consistent but I can't even think up an iota of reasoning behind the "economy collapsed because they were forced to give poors mortgages". The economy didn't collapse because people defaulted on their mortgages -- it collapsed because the imaginary market betting on those mortgages was over a 100 times larger than the actual value of the mortgages. And banks like Lehman Brothers were overleveraged to the point a 3 percent drop in the value of their assets would wipe them out.

comedyblissoption posted:it's crude scapegoating and market worship It's especially weird to me because I was a free market idiot before the collapse and it made me open my eyes about economics (and a bunch of other poo poo) and now I'm a socialist. I'm not a particularly smart guy and I was an adult when it happened and the fact other people will deny reality so blatantly when it's the event that made me question a lot of my beliefs and eventually change them for the better once I'd looked at actual evidence outside a bubble is bizarre to me.

Look at Scalia and any Second Amendment case - he never actually ruled based on the original intent/meaning of the amendment when it was written he just used originalism to coat reactionary beliefs in an objective veneer. This is what all originalists do. They go into it in the Dirty Money episode about him ("Confidence Man") and in the 80s he'd call up the tabloid reporters first thing in the morning and give them all the juicy tidbits from the party set the night before. It was a quid pro quo where their end they had to say he was a billionaire whenever they mentioned him.
