also taibbi got "cancelled" right after I Can't Breathe came out, thanks to some alt-right dipshits finally getting some traction by posting excerpts from the eXile book, as it coincided with the first widely published Hollywood #metoo allegations. Liberal media picked up on it and ran with it for a while so he had to cancel his book tour and apologize and Mark Ames - to his credit imo - also wrote an apology where he claimed that he alone, not matt, was responsible for all the problematic parts.

I imagine that whole experience has shaped how Taibbi thinks about all this, plus his experience in Russia where the eXile got shut down. I still think it's funny he took Nathan Robinson to task for comparing right-wing populists to various fascist leaders, but then writes multiple articles arguing that cancel culture is a modern Maoist Cultural Revolution, but that's just his politics. It's just jarring as poo poo that there's such a focus on this crap when there's a pandemic going on and American politicians are looting the country.

Also Taibbi and Ames famously do not like each other, mainly over how the eXile fell apart under Taibbi's leadership while Ames was in America doing research for Going Postal.

I think he also had his last podcast with Alex Pareene cancelled for some reason, Taibbi's cool and writing him off as a lib over this stupid goddamn letter is dumb

It is pretty small scale in the grand scheme of things, it is 2tn over 8 years and spread over a ton of different types of projects. That said, it does show that Washington is seriously starting to worry and that social democracy/reform capitalism in all honesty was only born out of Cold War competition.

The irony is that China’s continual growth may actually eventually spur a second wave of reformism if not technologically competition. You will also have a portions of the left “re-siding” with the West because they are “now socialists.”

nah it’s already over, we just don’t realize it yet. turns out the money spigot is still american infrastructure and no one maintained it so it’s stuck wide open. anyone who knew how to turn it off was laid off decades ago. dollars will continue to flood the economy faster than sea level rise, drowning the empire in its own hubris
