it's just corporations trying to make you engender some humanity towards them while they gently caress you in the rear end in a usually constitutionally legal manner

for errors it is fine, they have already failed to do the thing that would have let you respect them, whimsy will make nothing worse. anything with even a conversational tone inside normal functionality is horrible though. the email with the subject line "we miss you" from a service you have stopped using is one of the most despicable

you ask this about a corporation that

- makes its new hires wear a propeller beanie
- is building a college dorm for its employees
- doles out human contact ("massage credits") to people who work hard
- has a literal ball pit with a slide in its lobby

building housng is cool and good, its not like mtview is the middle of buttfuck tennessee where no one else lives within 300 mile radius leading to company towns. plenty of jobs to easily jump ship to and find (expensive) housing v quickly. i support them trying to build housing when rest of the southbay is steadfastly refusing to and it'll lead to slight downwards pressure on rental demand for others.

also iirc dont they just have on-site masseuses anyways? i was chatting with a guy who sells office furniture and stuff and said he was offered massages and stuff while he was there and the place was ridiculous as media made them out to be.

Sagebrush

i support the building of housing in theory, but lomarf if you think it's not gonna be (1) a family-unfriendly worker hole for unmarried 20-30somethings to keep living like they did at stanford and (2) a company-town-esque ploy to keep people at their jobs longer and return some of their salary to the employer

like, gently caress, let google get into the real estate business. why not. let them build giant apartment blocks and actually drive down the cost of housing for everyone, instead of further stratifying and separating the Googlers from the Rest Of Us.

they're wanting to build about 10k units, the city is fighting them and trying to force htem to cut it down to 1500 units which is stupid

http://www.mercurynews.com/2017/06/26/google-fights-plan-to-slash-mountain-view-housing-development-to-1500-units-from-10000/

quote:

Under the October draft plan, small “micro-unit/studios” were to make up 40 percent of the housing, followed by 30 percent 1-bedroom units, 20 percent 2-bedroom units and 10 percent 3-bedroom units. Twenty percent of units were to be considered “affordable.”

i think having 4k units for all the boring pasty midwestern transplant fucks who never leave work or their studio is fine. leaving another 3000 for married people to have kids in 2-3 br apts and another 3000 for couples for 1br is p good

also they're trying to have business and transit development htere which is good

Sagebrush
Feb 26, 2012

100 percent of units should be considered "affordable", given the metrics i'm sure they're using to determine that, but i agree that 10,000 units would be a great step forwards for the area. here's to hoping.

and really the most useful is is reducing demand on housing in sf, etc so good units arent wasted on boring googlers that don't even really care about just having a studio

but ya the city is going to throw a shitfit and probaly force htem to cut it down to <1500 units unfortunately. probably asking higher so they know they'll get pushed back to go less and everyone go can home happy as "win"
