Battletech Conversion of the Star Wars Edge of the Empire RPG

This is going to be the thread for testing the Battletech rules I've written for the Star Wars Edge of the Empire rpg rules. We'll be using a pbp format in a discord channel I've set up with a star wars dice roller. The goal is mostly to test the mech combat system and how clear, useable and if its too overwhelming for what is traditionally a very narrative game but we will be also be doing some general rpg. Additionally, having a look at how well non-pilot characters work inside a mech is going to be very helpful in terms of figuring out the numbers so a mix of pilots and non-pilots is definitely helpful. The key thing to keep in mind is I intend every player to have and pilot battlemechs in the game itself even if it might not be their primary job.

The way the rules are set up is that you are taking the Edge of the Empire/Age of Rebellion Core rulebooks by default and then adding the Battletech house rules on top of it or replacing it.

Character creation for example will be changed to :
1. Selecting Archetype
2. Selecting Origin
3. Star Wars character creation as normal
...
4. Pick a Battlemech from the Vehicle list (preferably either a Light or a Medium though if someone wants a Heavy I want to test some of those out too)

Rules found here:

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1SxdXSfuSoT_1fD17ERwrkm1owBvW5ihQKl_tODn41eg

And the Vehicle List can be found here

https://drive.google.com/open?id=1nuhd0Wv0SXu6_CChObP1PLqJ98rUaH2VlYoMwX5CyDU

Discord: https://discord.gg/kd3XvrJ

Mostly I'm looking for people who might be interesting/willing to help me test it out. I'm not fussed if you know the setting or not but a general idea would probably help.

What is Battletech?

Battletech is an 80's wargame designed around the use of giant robotic war machines known as Battlemechs which are piloted by the Mechwarriors. There are a horde of video games and books that go into this in detail but suffice to say the general premise of the setting is an eternal back forth conflict between various faction caught in the grip of political machinations caused by Space Feudalism. This is very much a setting known for Game of Thrones style factional politics and family vs family engagement while simply replacing the classic knights on horseback with giant walking death machines.

Its difficult to lock down the tone of the setting as it varies wildly as the metaplot changes through the different time periods. Technology advances and changes and factions are destroyed and new factions introduced. For this test I've tried to keep it to the simplest timeperiod, the Year 3025. It is the first period of peace after 250 years of constant fighting and while weapons of mass destruction have been banned from use, it was not before each of the factions managed to obliterate the technology and production facilities that were once produce during humanity's golden age.

This golden age was when all the factions of the Inner Sphere (a region roughly 500 light years in radius from earth) were united under the banner of the Star League. Unfortunately a series of political manoeuvring and scheming burnt that to the ground and the five Great Houses of the Inner Sphere (House Kurita, House Davion, House Liao, House Marik, and House Steiner) all went to war to claim the rule of the old Star League. The result of this seemingly unending series of conflicts was that production facilities have been creepy across the Inner Sphere, vast and uncountable technology has been lost and the ancient technology of the Star League is now seemingly gone forever (except for the extremely rare find here and there).

The only group that keeps any significant amount of this ancient technology is ComStar (formerly a telecommunications network owned by the government; space Telstra, or space AT&T for you americans). Comstar have reorganised into a religious cult over this period of war and have managed to have every faction agree to respect their neutrality as they maintain and manage the HPG network, the only method of sending information across the vast distances of space in a reasonable time frame. Anyone who crosses them gets their phones cut off basically. They ruthlessly horde technology and secretly undermine and kill/steal/sabotage anyone attempting to restore lost technology or anyone who has found or recovered some old Star League tech. This is really easy to do given they have access to every communication method used across every faction.

The big premise of this era is one of scarcity. After 250 years of war, resources are at an all time low amongst every faction, truces are being set up and peace is in the works but this doesn't mean people have stop trying to take other peoples stuff. With nobody being able to really deploy solid and stable armies and battlemechs being at an all time premium, mercenaries are becoming a very big deal to fill in the gap. A battlemech in this time period is very rarely one thats just come off the production line and likely to be a family heir passed down from generation to generation or a juicy bit of salvage recovered from a recent victory.

Battlemechs themselves are huge robotic war machines (mostly bipedal though some quadrupeds) coming in all different shapes and sizes. Designed for different roles and specializations. The big premise of their design is that they have to carefully manage their heat or their systems begin to freeze up. Since most of the technology and knowledge was lost its very difficult to properly build and customize them so they are generally barely functional and held together with hope and prayer during this era. They are designed very much to operate as tanks with legs such as their facing being important as their rear armour is much more vulnerable than their front. They are piloted almost exclusively by a single pilot each that puts on a Neurohelmet to uses the pilot's brain to handle a lot of the subconscious actions like balance and specific motor movement. These mechs are slow, clunky and use highly outdated equipment where the end result is often that punching another robot in the face is as useful as firing your array of weapons. Think less Gundam and more Pacific Rim.

Pillbug

Astrid "Firework" Cheng and her (stolen) TBT-5N Trebuchet

A high-ranking Maskirovka agent in the FWL was taken alive. Astrid, also working for the Maskirovka, realized that he would almost certainly blow her cover once he was interrogated. She really, really didn't want to die. However, since she was only a lowly go-between and codebreaker, she had no easy way out. So she took the nuclear option: betrayal. She falsified and distributed Maskirovka orders so that other agents would help her steal a Trebuchet from local defense forces and smuggle it offworld. Her hope was that the Maskirovka would have mercy on her if she didn't come back to the Confederation empty-handed. She wasn't particularly concerned with the lives of the agents she tricked, since she assumed they would also be revealed when the captured spy talked. What she didn't know at the time was that the first agent had managed to commit suicide in custody without ever talking; not only was her rogue operation unnecessary, but it blew the cover of a half-dozen other Maskirovka operatives and many more of their connections, none of whom would've been exposed if not for her actions.

At this point, she has nothing left but the mech, and both the FWL and the Capellans would cheerfully execute her if they caught her. With no other choice, she's signed up for a mercenary group. It's the only place someone with a mech can fly under the radar; she can't risk trying to sell it with two Great Houses searching for a stolen Trebuchet. The only problem is that she's not actually a mechwarrior and she has absolutely no experience piloting a mech. But hey, how hard could this whole "mechwarrior" thing really be?

Just a bump and to let everyone know if you're not in the discord I'd like to start testing things after this weekend if people are able to finish their characters off by then. Just need a quick character and a selection of their mech.

I'll probably rotate through the roster a bit so if you're not done by then you just won't be in the starting 4 people.

On top of that for testing you'll be playing the roster of a mercenary company in the year 3026, current under the employ of House Steiner, and stationed on the surely peaceful Lyran Commonwealth and Draconis Combine border.

To that end I need people to post their favourite suggestions for the name of your mercenary company.

This will be our starting lance + urbie mascot. I'll post the start of campaign in the discord #battletech channel in a couple of days.

In the meantime everyone who doesnt have a Callsign yet, feel free to make something up. You all also have 700 credits to spend on starting gear, ranged weapons are using the table in the house rules, melee/brawl weapons are the same as normal with obviously no lightsabers.

EDIT: Additionally everyone starts with a Crash Survival Kit (without the pistol) to represent your basic kit + survival equipment you would keep inside your battlemech cockpit.

Derp one last thing I forgot to get people to do. Assign your Weapon groups!

Everyone can get up to 3, you can fire a weapon on its own at any time so don't need to have a weapon group unless it fires multiple weapons. The first weapon in the weapon group should be the 'primary weapon', i.e. the one that you get to activate abilities for an is what hits if you hit with the attack.

Put them in the format like:

Group 1 (Heat 24): PPC (Left Arm), PPC (Right Arm), Medium Laser (Right Arm)
