I get how the UFC shouldn't bother retaining guys like Moussasi when its business model relies on strong sellers such as Shogun v St Preux and TBA v TBD.

It also made the fighters look even more indistinguishable to the casual viewer. The UFC simultaneously believes people only tune in to see a few larger than life personalities and also that fighters should be as interchangable as possible.
