Disney has a lot of money but I'm not sure why that means they'd want to dump a bunch of it into propping up the UFC on ESPN so they can rake in tens of dozens of viewers who want to watch a Corey Anderson vs Patrick Cummings number one contender match.

Meisha has had some entertaining fights, but her fights with Ronda were extremely one sided and the only thing you can say in her favor is that she took longer to lose convincingly than most.

1st AD posted:Ronda was already a star by the time she got a UFC contract. Not exactly an unknown at that point. Her first Strikeforce fight was for 4/4. Her Strikeforce numbers were good but not great. Her best draw was against Kaufman, which was still worse than Diaz vs Cyborg. Also, she's dead now and Conor McGregor is a boxer and Lesnar is milking the UFC for leverage against WWE and their last PPV had four viewers because it turns out that giving all of the money and promotion to three people and making GBS threads on your champions isn't a great way to build a sustainable viewership. Also, let's pretend that it's all just a meritocracy and guys get paid based on views the bring and Sage Northcutt isn't making more than 90% of the roster despite no one giving a poo poo about Sage Northcutt.

If the UFC actually thought that there was no value to having better fighters on the midcard and prelims they would just 500 bucks to King of the Cage rejects to fill in the other 10 fights on each card that don't involve one of the half dozen notable draws in the organization. There is value in being seen as the premiere MMA organization which involves having most of the best fighters, and also in discovering guys on the rise when you can lock them into contracts instead of trying to buy them after they blow up. And when you do find a superstar you probably want people for them to fight and not the 1000th ranked whatever fresh from the Z leagues.

The UFC currently has one active fighter that can reliably draw more than 300k views and he's doing a boxing match and then buying an island to retire to with the proceeds, so I'm not sure their model is all that smart. The only people who seem to watch the non-McGregor cards are MMA fans who want to see good fights and they're the ones you alienate by running off the middle and back of the top ten and filling those spots with Pat Cummins or whatever.

The first D.C/Jones fight did 800k, but there seemed to be a lot more heat around that one than this one. 500K would still be the best non-McGregor/Non-Rousey/non-Lesnar card they've had in a couple of years.
