I've got after effects now (thanks thread) and need to play with some actual video > convert to gif. the process i've been using is to render as quicktime (.mov) in AE, then import that into photoshop and save for web as a gif (256 colors, set looping to Forever). that's how i learned the process years ago, so i'm not sure if theres a more streamlined method now. unless you mean taking an existing vid, turning that into a .gif, then working on it in AE, which you shouldn't need to do since AE can import straight video files. if you're sourcing youtube for footage you can use one of the millions of youtube downloader services to get source footage that can get plopped right into AE.
